Delphi SkyFi3 (XM) price range: $119.99

The good: The Delphi SkyFi3 is a competitively priced plug-and-play satellite radio receiver/recorder. It can pause and replay programming up to 30 minutes, is lightweight and easy to use, and includes a large and legible screen. It plays back digital audio files via the expansion slot and can be used while afoot with optional antenna headphones. It includes a car kit and a remote control.
The bad: The Delphi SkyFi3 has a budget build quality, with a monochrome screen with no channel graphics and no built-in antenna, so you must use optional headphones for true portability. It lacks a Micro SD card, has subpar rated battery life, and can't store your own digital audio files on internal memory. It has a substandard FM transmitter and charging the device over USB isn't guaranteed.
The bottom line: The Delphi SkyFi3 XM receiver/recorder is a flexible solution for home, car, and on the go for those who don't want to spend big bucks.

Great upgrade from earlier devices
by Paratrewpr on June 28, 2008
Pros: Way better than my old skyfi

Summary: When I saw the dismal user rating I was surprised. I upgraded my old skyfi, finally, and got this one. I couldn't be happier... its like I shot forward in time out of the satellite dark ages. There's way more options on the display for viewing what's on and also you get a ticker for stock prices or sports scores. The only thing I wish it would do is pull from satellite when its not in the vehicle cradle. Seems like there ought to be a way...
With a 2gb chip in it, you've got all the music you can listen to for a very very long while. Add the ability to record and play back live music (much like a DVR does for TV shows) and I just can't see this getting the scores Ive seen so far. I think its great and would easily recommend it to my friends. -
Skifi3 Poor performance, keeps locking up and poor interface.

This is crap!
by yeahimtheone on April 28, 2008
Pros: Haven't found 1 pro yet.
Cons: FM interference, constant static, etc!
Summary: I don't even turn it on anymore. This is nothing but a piece of junk. Also, XM is worthless when it comes to trying to fix the problem.

Poorly designed, poor performance
by pete6677 on April 6, 2008

Summary: Where do I begin, this thing has been nothing but trouble. The FM car antenna works poorly. It only operates on 88.1 FM (hope there's not a local station on that frequency). Sound quality is not good and the FM transmitter is needlessly difficult to install. Why must it be directly applied to the physical antenna rather than using the car's wiring through the power plug like every other FM device? The outside magnetic mount antenna will scratch your car's paint. The unit freezes up sometimes when it is turned on. Due to the non-removable battery, I must wait until it runs down before being able to reset and unfreeze it, which can take about an hour. The user interface is clunky and lacks important features such as convenient display of the programming description. Its too easy to activate the 30 minute recording feature, which Delphi seems to think is the most important feature of this device. How about decent design instead? When it craps out completely, I probably won't even be able to get warranty service as Delphi looks like its about to go belly up. With products like this, I can see why.

Worthless junk

Summary: This is the most worthless piece of junk I have ever owned. Locks up frequently during mp3 or xm playback. Shuts itself off at random times during xm usage. Most often, when I choose any mp3 or recording and select 'play', nothing changes@#$$. Once restarted, it fixes that issue for 1 or 2 songs, then behaves the same way again. Do I need to say more? Fm transmitter is quite weak ( oh yes, i connected the antenna to it ). And the people who gave it good reviews probably wrote their reviews within the first month or so of their purchase- because mine worked fine initially, then slowly became worse as the days went by. Shame on the quality control team who let this product out the door!

Summary: I have had my Skyfi3 for a little over a month and have had no problems of locking up or shutting down life some others have stated. I like that I can listen to the radio anywhere and not just in my car or house, otherwise I would never pay for a radio subscription. I do feel that I need to be gentle with it as it feels all plastic, but I am so far happy with the performance and do recommend it.

Unfortunately I have had to return my skifi3 4 times now. I have not had one last for two months.
I have done everything Tech Support has told me to do and the units still stop working or freeze up on me.
I have invested money in the Skifi3 Bose system and the vehicle unit.
I wish I bought an mp3 player. I am done with XM radio because of my bad experience.
Do not buy this unit. You will regret it. -
Not good and ALWAYS check C-Net

Summary: If I learned nothing else from this exercise, ALWAYS check C-Net before buying. Actually, I got this for a Christmas present. It seemed ok for a while and then started locking up. So I exchanged it for a new unit. And then the new unit started locking up. I experimented a little bit and thought it might have been the cold that was locking it up. I'm still not convinced that it wasn't since the whole screen is LCD.
Now I have to go back to the drawing board to see what my options are. -

Summary: This units sucks!!!!!! I've had it for about a week now, and it only turns on about 1/3 of the time. I've called Delphi and they tell me to hold the volume + while holding the Mode button, sometimes it turns it on, but most of the time I just get a blank screen. I just came in from my car where I just spent 15 minutes trying to turn the sucker on -- to no avail. Which, of course deems it useless. I'm going to have to buy another unit and I don't think I can return this one. Out over $100 now. Don't buy this junk.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Delphi Corp.
- Part number: SA10224
- Description: The Delphi SKYFi3 comes with everything to start enjoying XM in any vehicle equipped with an FM radio. A low-profile car dock with direct channel and preset-favorites access allows for both horizontal and vertical mounting options. The car dock also provides for a single auxiliary line input so users can listen to an external audio. SKYFi3's orientation flexibility, bright 2.8-inch display screen and ease-to-access car dock buttons offer improved readability and control for safer operation while driving. In today's fast-paced, multi-tasking world interruptions while listening to our favorite songs are unavoidable. The SKYFi3 features a 30 minute Pause-Replay function that continuously and automatically saves the last 30 minutes of music, sports, comedy or talk - regardless of whether the user changes channels. At any point during live listening, users can pause a song or program with a single button press. As long as playback resumes within 30 minutes, users can enjoy what they would have otherwise missed. The Delphi SKYFi3 can time-shift up to 10 hours of fresh and continuously updated XM programming on its non-removable internal flash memory. Recordings can be started anytime during the live listening mode or by using SKYFi3's scheduled recording feature. A subscription to XM must be maintained to listen to stored XM programming.
