The good: The iM414 speaker dock for the Microsoft Zune includes an FM radio and a remote control, is battery-powered, and has an impressive sound for its small size.
The bad: There's no clock or alarm feature, and its volume range is timid.
The bottom line: The Altec Lansing iM414 scores big with its classy, portable design, but comes up short on features and power.

Great product for Zune 30 gig
by macdog32 on February 15, 2009
Pros: Funny thing I bought this at a Goodwill store for 10.99. This is an awesome buy. It is a basic player for the Zune. Yeah I wish the remote could do more, but its simple and easy. I really enjoy the player. The sound quality is good.
Cons: I found nothing wrong with this little player.

Good, but compatibility problems w/80 MB Zune
by jspaziante on May 12, 2008
Pros: Good sound; nice remote
Cons: Compatibility with 80 GB Zune is poor

FLUKE(?): The first iM414 that I purchased was flaky for the first week, then was no longer able to play the output from the Zune. I returned the device to AltecLansing (A.L.), and the next device is working fine (albeit with the same flaky behavior that I'll discuss below). The return process went very smoothly, and I can't fault them for the bad first unit. Any electronics manufacturer will have the occasional lemon.
FACT: The only way I can get the 80 GB Zune to play on the iM414 is to 1) Power on the iM414, 2) Power off the Zune, then 3) connect the Zune to the iM414. Both iM414's exhibited this behavior, so I doubt this is a fluke. Oddly enough, A.L. went out of their way to include a card that described the connection sequence, and this was NOT the order that they specified.
OPINION: The above behavior leads me to believe that the iM414 was built for the earlier Zune models and was considered "good enough" for compatibility with the 80 GB zune, so they decided not to spend money to update it. The physical fit is also poor with this model, as you really need to concentrate to line it up correctly within the slot (due to the extra slack on all sides to accommodate the larger, older Zune model). The fact that A.L included an adapter to accommodate the much smaller 4/8 GB models but did do so for the 30 GB also supports the the "good enough" theory.
SUMMARY: The iM414 is just that... "good enough". I don't regret the purchase, but I think that A.L. could have done much better. If you're an occasional user, then go ahead and get one. Otherwise, I'd advise someone to wait for the next model and hope that they better tailor/test it to the newer Zunes.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

PROS:
*The remote. It's small and convenient.
*The adapter for the 80/120 GB model. It's now included and fits well.
*It's a very handsome gadget and will suit my contemporary style nicely. It doesn't look cheap.
CONS:
*Don't put the volume up all the way. Sound gets distorted. Really, you wont need the max volume. This machine isn't made for parties. It will not drown everything else out. Buying it for that purpose will be a dissapointment. But the volume is suffcient to fill a room or two, it won't be too quiet either.
IMPORTANT: This IS compatible with your Zune. Do not pay attention to the instructions in the package. If you are not getting cooperation with your Zune, remove it, turn it off. Make sure the machine is still on. While the Zune is off, plug it into the dock. It will turn on again and you will have compatibility with your zune. Easy enough instructions to follow for a well-priced docking station.
Truly, it's a good value. Unless you're looking for a full blown boom box to rush the room with a booming mess of sound, this is great. I only left room for improvement in the rating because I've had it for mere hours. I give myself a little room to renig on its excellence if it poops out in the next month. ;) -

Summary: I bought the unit for my daughter's zune primarily for a charging station and also for the external speakers. The unit had difficulty recognizing the zune and after a couple of times inserting/removing the zune it recognizes the zune. This has been the situation since we purchased it. About 6 months after buying it, my daughter plugged in her zune and the thing died. Apparently, others have had this issue as well and a quick internet search for "inMotion im414 schematics" will reveal the issue. However, there are no schematics to be found on the internet so this one is pretty-much dead.

Won't support Zune80 Unit
by PadreKee on January 14, 2009
Pros: Portable and nice sound (for radio).
Cons: It's advertized to support 1st and 2nd generation Zune, with the box stating Zune80 is supported. Inside, the adapter provided does not work with the Zune80.
Summary: If you have 1st gnereation Zune, I suppose is fine. If it's 2nd generation Zune, good luck. Waste of my time. Contacted tech support which acknowledged that I would ...
Summary: If you have 1st gnereation Zune, I suppose is fine. If it's 2nd generation Zune, good luck. Waste of my time. Contacted tech support which acknowledged that I would need an adapter, so there is duplicity in the advertising (box outside and literature inside says Zune80 is supported). Tech support says the supply of adapter is 0 at present and no foreseeable date for the adapter to be availalbe. So, basically waste of my time. Taking back to store for my money back.

Day in, day out, love it!!! No, really I LOVE it!!!
by llorick_gmail on December 22, 2008
Pros: Small size, not too pricey (paid $100 cdn). Sounds GREAT for my appllication. I don't play it at much 18-22 (out of a max of 30) volume. The bass boost and surround sound makes some song sound better and others sound crap, depends on the mix
Cons: I'd like it if had more Zune control features on the remote. Lilke others I have to be carefull when connecting - two hands, slow and carefull like but I've NEVER had a disconnest as others have reported.
Summary: I use it every day at work and I'd buy it it again n a heartbeat... Unless you want to spend ALOT more money, just buy it. Be carefull ...

Bad connections.Uninformed support
by trevorc10 on October 21, 2008
Pros: sounds good
Cons: Hit or miss base connection .Altec support said they had a insert to fix the problem not true (no such thing) After 4 months asked were was the part was told my 80gig zune would not fit .then retracted the statement.Do not buy
Summary: No good if it takes several connection attempts and then looses the connection.

Exactly what I needed.

Summary: I read the poor reviews and went ahead and bought it anyways. I don't know what people are talking about because this thing is great. I use it for music at the pool and beach and it works great. The sound is excelent, it runs for 24 hours on 3 AAA batteries and it fits right in my backpack alnong with all my other stuff. It's worth every penny. The fack that the Zune wont fit in the dock snug is not a big issue. It connects fine. You can't use the remote to change artists but you should set up playlists for the pool and beach anyways. It's a good deal and worth the $99.

Poor showing
by Milez5858 on July 7, 2008
Pros: Decent looking, Cool Remote holder.

Summary: This is heading back to the store as soon as this review is done. I have the 80 Gig Zune. The connection insert holds the Zune incorrectly on the adapter and triggers the pause mode constantltly. I either have to use no insert which makes it difficult to place in the dock, or I have to prop an eraser behind the Zune to hold it forward and make a proper connection.
The box reads "Powerful cystal clear sound". It has neither.
There are panel buttons to skip songs and volume, but not one for play pause. You have to use the remote.. so.. .why have the cool remote storage space? It's awkward to access the Zune play button because of the afore mentioned loose connection.
A classic case of form over function. -
Good, could be better.
by BanHim on May 11, 2008
Pros: Decent clarity, volume, base, and surround effects give this unit respectable sound quality considering its' price and size. The remote is clean and easy to use. Zune, Aux, and FM source settings.
Cons: Zune sits loose in dock, needs more control over Zune/MP3player, no clock/alarm.

Summary: For its size and price the InMotion iM414 is good compared to other portable speaker docks. There are better units out there and there are many that are worse. It has bass boost and surround sound effect features that you can turn on and off. They do a decent job of further improving the already decent sound quality considering size and price points. Sound is good, but there is no woofer and any sound savvy individual will notice. The remote is easy to use, but overall the product should have more control over the device that is connected to it. Menu navigation is nonexistent, you can only navigate the playlist you manually set the Zune to. The lack of a clock and alarm is a minor lose that really shouldn't be that big a deal to most. The biggest apparent fault is that all Zune models sit loose in the dock, this could create issues depending on use. Overall the inMotion is a solid product something expected from Altec Lansing, but it would be nice to see them return to the drawing board and create a product that is more in tune with Zune hardware and software design.
