The SoundDock Series II is similar looking to the SoundDock Portable--but it doesn't take batteries.
(Credit: Bose)Like a lot of other iPod audio speaker companies, Bose is introducing a GSM-shielded "Works with iPhone" certified version of its iPod speaker system, the SoundDock. It's calling this one the SoundDock Series II and it says it's been "updated to more closely resemble the clean and distinctive lines of the Bose SoundDock Portable digital music system." Priced at $299, the SoundDock Series II will be available in early September in glossy black for a $100 less than its portable sibling. Meanwhile, the original SoundDock can be had for around $220.
Here are a few other highlights from the press release for those who care:
The system features a new auxiliary input that lets users connect other audio devices, such as an MP3 player, portable CD player, or music-enabled phone. It provides dock-and-play simplicity and will charge an iPod or iPhone while in use. No additional setup is required. An included infrared remote controls the system and basic iPod and iPhone functions, including playlist navigation, from across the room. Volume controls are located on the unit.
The SoundDock Series II system maintains a small footprint, measuring just 6 5/8 inches high by 12 inches wide and only 6 1/2 inches deep.
The SoundDock Series II system works seamlessly with the iPhone 3G and original iPhone models. It also works with most iPod models, including iPod Touch and any iPod featuring a click wheel, including all Nano, Mini, Photo, Video, and Classic models.
Bose SoundDock systems sound good, but you can today get better-sounding systems that cost less and have more features. For instance, it would have been nice if this model had an AM/FM radio. A clock and alarm would have been nice additions as well--especially for $300.

Very Pleasantly Surprised!
by JamesGengler on March 16, 2012

Summary: I am very pleasantly surprised with this thing. Though not a hardcore audiophile, I do take my equipment very seriously, and have generally avoided Bose based on the recommendations of the "experts". But I am VERY discerning, love all types of music, and only buy excellent quality stuff. Enough about me...
My intent was to buy a competitor to this unit the day after Christmas, but I received the Bose Sounddock 2 as a Christmas gift. Its outstanding with my iPhone 4 set to "Rock" for a bit of treble and bass boost. Bass is full and tight, much deeper than I expected from such small speakers. For tracks with very deep bass punch there will be holes...4" drivers can only go so low, but the limits are way down there and I can't imagine any small unit can go there anyway.
I've been on a Moby kick lately, and the Sounddock handles almost all of his ever-present bass. Treble is fine...present but not over-boosted. All the detail is there, but it doesn't sound artificial or over-done. But where I think the Bose really excels is in the midrange. Vocals are perfectly clear and distinct, shockingly so. Its difficult to describe, but I really do feel that I hear much more of the music with this unit. It isn't at all "tinny" like cheap units that over-boost midrange. Its...just right.
Overall sound is superb, rich with detail. Cello is full with all the bite and edge of a live performance. Opera is beautifully balanced with unbelievably clear and detailed vocals perectly balanced with the orchestra. Anything acoustic is as life-like as I've ever heard with the subtle details that aren't easily reproduced in recordings...guitar, strings, drums, etc. Rhythm and big bass are tight, with much better than expected low-frequency response. Also, whether at high or low volume the sound is the same...something you wont hear with lesser-quality audio bits. So much to my surprise Bose has won me over with a well-balanced and superbly-detailed sound.
*Note, for low price, if you're will buy the SoundDock Series II, I suggest you have to compare prices before you decide at: Compare-Lowprices.info/SoundDock-Series-II

Incredible sound and power for such a small unit
by Enrique_Samos on December 27, 2011
Pros: - Easy to set-up and start using, right out of the box.
- Small and unobtrusive size. Very discreet and stylish.
- Packs great sound and ample power, even for larger rooms.
- Great sound reproduction.
- Outstanding range from the remote control.Cons: - Docking outlet might be a bit too flimsy. Need to be careful when inserting your iPod/phone into the slot.

Summary: I don't know why some people criticize this unit as delivering too little for too much money. If you're trying to test out the display unit in a big box electronics store you're bound to be disappointed by what you hear at first. But who wouldn't when you're in a 25,000 square feet concrete and metal room with the guy next to you turning up the volume to the home theatre system so loud that your eardrums pop.
Bring the unit home and it's a completely different story. You can put it anywhere in your house/condo and it will sound great. Just remember that you're dealing with acoustics here, so there are a lot of variables that will influence the final result, and that goes for any make/model of speaker or iPod docking station, regardless of the price. Chose the right spot for you and enjoy! -
I was expecting better; much better.
by tim terrific on August 6, 2011
Pros: Incredibly easy to set-up.
Cons: Bass is virtually non-existent. Not much thought went into the remote. Definitely does not fill the room with rich sound.
Summary: Bose is the Dyson of sound systems: great marketing, not so great sound. Very disappointed. This is my first experience with Bose and will probably be my last. I'm ...

Small yet powerful enough to fill a room
by pcw45 on March 30, 2010
Pros: Powerful sound, charges while playing ipod. Although not so superb, excellent for Ipod dock.
Cons: No radio, no alarm. remote only works with Ipod products
Summary: Amazing sound. Lets be honest here. With $299 (or less), you are not going to find any better "sounding" ipod docks.

Wonderful performance for a ipod dock...
by Jle8585 on December 22, 2009
Pros: Style seems to fit most peoples needs. Sound is amazing. Im a Bose hardcore fan, have a few Bose products. Good dock for the price, like the B&W Zepplin is great also, but the price isnt, same with the price for this Bose dock.
Cons: Could of had settings for sound. Remote could of been designed a lil better. Bass could be deeper... That about sums it up.
Summary: Bottom line..... Great product for the $$$. The new Sounddock 10 is an amazing replacement for this dock. Bose, better sound..

For the money the best in my opinion
by woofwoof7 on September 29, 2009
Pros: Folks this unit produces awesome sound and I mean awesome for its size... incredible period... anyone that says otherwise needs there head examined... probably there ears... I have the Zepplin unit to, and this matches it in most respects.
Cons: None. Seriously unless your the type that expects 100K sound out of a 300 dollar unit which is unrealistic....
Summary: You know what... got both the Zepplin and Bose... buy the Bose you won't be dissappointed.... of course if you have the money buy both and play then simultaneously ...

Hot Name but Luke Warm Performance
by 2garymoore on March 10, 2009
Pros: Set up was quick. I have an iPod nano and had no problem connecting to the Bose SoundDock II. The sleek design adds a custom high end look to the product and found it to have plenty of volume to fill a room, and then some.
Cons: (1) The base was not as deep as I would like and there is not a way to make any adjustments. (2) I wanted to connect the SoundDock to a CD player and was surprised to learn the CD player offed by Bose IS NOT compatible with the SoundDock II.
Summary: Bottom line is that I am please with the system overall. It delivers the quality sound that Bose is known for. I would like to see the price come down ...
Summary: Bottom line is that I am please with the system overall. It delivers the quality sound that Bose is known for. I would like to see the price come down but I made the choice to focus on quality. I think Bose should consider offering the buyer a way to adjust base and treble so the system can be enjoyed based on the buyers preferences. And ask the product development department to collaborate with marketing so items like the CD player can sync up with other products. They missed a multiple sale.
