The good: The JBL On Stage IIIP works with all iPods and the iPhone, and it can be used with other MP3 players as well. It has a small footprint and can be run off of wall power or batteries. Delivers clear audio.
The bad: The JBL On Stage IIIP doesn't offer much bass, and there's no pass-through syncing option; volume controls are testy.
The bottom line: The JBL On Stage IIIP is a solid portable- and desktop-speaker option for iPhone users who want a compact unit that will work with a wide variety of audio devices.
Though they are portable devices, the iPod and the iPhone can make a wonderful source for headphone-free music when connected to a speaker. If you have a player full of great music and personalized playlists, you might as well play it out loud every once in a while. Unfortunately, several of the made-for-iPod systems that have come out in the past few years don't work well with the iPhone, presenting a problem for those with multiple devices. The upshot is that manufacturers have started to address this issue with iPhone-friendly speaker systems, which are shielded against cell phone interference and thus let you use one audio solution with all of your devices. One such gadget is the JBL On Stage IIIP, a $150 portable-speaker unit designed to put the music phone on display. It's not the boomiest of the bunch, but its small footprint and understated design could make it an appealing option for some.
As its name suggests, the On Stage IIIP is shaped like a small, circular stage, measuring about 7.2 inches in diameter and roughly 2 inches tall at its tallest point in the back. The center stage, which features an iPod dock, is surrounded by a black, metal speaker grille that matches the glossy, black body of the unit. JBL includes five clear-plastic dock adapters for achieving a secure fit with every iPod since the first-generation Nano. An auxiliary-line input on the back of the speaker makes it compatible with the Shuffle and non-iPod MP3 players, as well; a 3.5mm stereo patch cable is included for such purposes. The backside of the unit also features a power button and DC input for the included power cable. Two other ports, which are covered by rubber stoppers, appear to have been designed with the intent to offer pass-through syncing, but don't actually have any connections built in.
Along with the aforementioned cables, the JBL On Stage IIIP comes packaged with an IR remote. The remote is small, but has plenty of buttons for controlling nearly every function you would want. There are volume, mute, play/pause, and track forward/reverse keys, as well as buttons for navigating up and down menu lists, making menu selections, and stepping back through the interface. The range is good; we could skip tracks while in direct line of sight from at least 25 feet away. Unfortunately, the remote cannot get you out of the autohold mode of the iPhone or the iPod Touch--you have to swipe your finger on the screen for that. Another thing we noticed: volume controls on the remote and on the speaker tended either to be too sensitive or not sensitive enough, making it difficult to adjust in increments.
The JBL On Stage IIIP speaker is a reasonable performer, though music sounds a bit flat and lacking at higher volumes, and bass is definitely not its strong point. The unit does get surprisingly loud, though, and there's no distortion with the levels turned up high. At moderate volumes, the speaker sounds clear and even, but not entirely warm. There is a bit of low-end response, but it's not thumping. It's about on par with many multimedia speakers. Stereo separation is decent, thanks to the placement of the drivers on either side of the unit (there are four small Odyssey transducers, two on each side of the circle). The rated battery life of 12 hours is decent, though not jaw-dropping. You'll need to provide six AA batteries to run the speaker sans wall power (the compartment is located on the bottom of the unit).

Excessive mains hum / background noise
by Ken519 on June 6, 2009
Pros: Looks nice
Reasonably flat for a suit case
Remote
Sound OK once you crank the volume to overcome the mains humCons: Very loud mains hum so load unable to use the iPod as alarm clock since it keeps you awake with the hum. Also emits a pulsing background noise when iPod is on but not playing.
Summary: Purchased it with idea of having iPod music on business trips and using iPod alarm clock plus charging the iPod. Attracted by the looks and its reasonably flat pack plus ...
Summary: Purchased it with idea of having iPod music on business trips and using iPod alarm clock plus charging the iPod. Attracted by the looks and its reasonably flat pack plus dual voltage etc. However the background noise is so bad that I cannot use it as an alarm clock and have to crank the volume pretty high to overcome this noise.
I will probably leave it in the garbage (trash) can when I leave this hotel. -
A fantastic personal speaker system when size matters
by nurmahal on February 21, 2009
Pros: Small footprint. Attractive, sophisticated appearance.
Remote control does everything but wipe your rear. Incredibly efficient.
Easy to transport ... 6 AA batteries last for 12 hours.
Best of all ... the sound quality!Cons: The print on the remote control buttons is hard to see. That is honestly the only negative of which I can think. In the scheme of things, a very small gripe.

Summary: I use my JBL Center Stage IIIP with my generation 4 iPod Nano. There is a lot of mis-information out there regarding compatibility. Some speaker systems out there will only play, but not charge, this new Nano. My daughter purchased another brand of speaker system and her system plays and charges her 3rd generation iPod Nano, but it will not charge my 4th generation Nano. So, I went to the nearby Apple store at "The Shops at Willow Bend" in Dallas to make sure I bought a system that was fully compatible with ALL generations of Nano including my gen 4. This speaker system is COMPLETELY compatible with my iPod Nano 4th generation. In the box, it comes with several adapters for older generation iPod Nano's, but I just used the adapter that came with my generation 4 ipod and it fits perfectly on the dock. My Nano fits securely in place using that adapter. When you buy an iPod Nano, be sure to hang on to the adapter that comes with it, but in case you lose it, they are available from Apple for a small charge.
If you want a speaker system for playing at parties, for large rooms, make the investment and get yourself a Bose system. I am a big Bose fan. You won't regret the extra money well-spent. But if what you need is a small, portable, attractive speaker system that will literally fit anywhere and has amazingly good sound quality ... the JBL Center Stage IIIP is absolutely a perfect choice. This particular JBL speaker system fits my needs better than any other system ... and I checked them all out. I recommend looking at how you will use a speaker system and then buying accordingly ... big, quality sound for a large room or parties - Bose; high quality sound at more modest volume levels that you can place on a nightstand, computer workstation, bathroom, bedroom, etc - JBL Center Stage IIIP.
Let's face it, this is a very small speaker system for NOT a small amount of money. When I got home and plugged in my Nano to this JBL and played the first song, a sense of relief and satisfaction came over me. It really is worth the money. The clarity of the sound is just great. You can understand every word in the lyrics being sung. And that is something I normally could not decipher some of the time with other speaker systems. I'm not going to tell you a thunderous bass eminates from this tiny system, but I was surprised to find that the bass is definitely there. That's a break-through coming from such small speakers. I don't know how JBL did it, but I am grateful.
When you are playing an iPod on a speaker system, you do not want to have to touch the iPod itself. Some speaker system's remote only perform limited functions. This little remote DOES EVERYTHING. I've been able to fully run up and down my Nano's menu screens using the remote. Never have to touch the Nano itself. There is space directly on top of the JBL to place the remote (behind the Nano) when not in use. And you'll want to keep it there when not being used because you do not want to lose this very small remote ... the Center Stage itself only has volume control buttons on it, whereas the remote does everything.
In the C-Net review of this system they mention the volume control being too touchy or in some cases not sensitive enough. Specifically, what they mean is that if you use the volume control on the system base itself, the increments increased or decreased with each touch of one of the buttons are larger increments than what will occur when you touch the volume controls on the remote. Personally, I like the larger increments you get from one touch of the volume control buttons on the base unit. But the volume control on the remote works fine, you just have to touch the volume buttons several times to get the same impact you'd get from using the base unit buttons. But I do agree with them that the remote's volume control is kind of sensitive. I have no issue with the base unit's volume control. Both volume controls work ... just differently.
As I type these thoughts, I have my JBL playing. So very glad I made this purchase. It meets my specific needs perfectly. Only you can determine what your needs are, but the JBL Center Stage IIIP is a valid option for many people. -
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Not even worthy of a HALF STAR

Summary: I bought this product over two 1/2 months ago, and it was defected. I returned it to JBL for an exchange. I had to pay for return shipment plus insurance of their defective dock. It took them two months to ship me out a new product. I called and they would give me an eta, but then push it back every two weeks. So finally I receive my product in the mail and it was the WRONG PRODUCT. It was the on Stage III not IIIP(for IPhone). So I paid close to $200.00(including the tax and the return shipping) and I don't even have the right dock. Do not buy!!!
