Excellent TV - Exceeded My Expectations!
by L-Smith on April 16, 2011
Pros: + Image quality is impressive
+ 7" screen the detail is sharp
+ Color is deep and illumination is vivid
+ The stereo sound is good and loud
+ Solidly builtCons: - Included antenna is minimal, and probably not enough to get all the channels in some areas

Summary: I was pleasantly surprised that I received a television of such high quality when I paid 62% off the list price. I have owned dozens of TV's through the years (Sony, JVC, Panasonic, RCA, Zenith, Quasar, Proton, Koss, Casio) and this Haier ranks among the best I've owned.
CONSTRUCTION: It is solidly built, with no room for give-and-play. It is compact in size with a durable non-slip matte black finish, that doesn't show fingerprints. The external connections are solid. The only flimsy part is the fold out stand on back. However, there is a standard size metal tripod socket in the bottom for using an accessory stand.
VIDEO/AUDIO: The image quality is impressive. At 1440x230 dpi on a 7" screen the detail is sharp, color is deep and illumination is vivid. The stereo sound is good and loud. There is an external mini phone jack for stereo headphones. There is a full compliment of menu options to adjust the screen--luminosity, brightness, color saturation, contrast, hue and sharpness.
TUNER: The TV tuner will accept the old NTSC analog signal and the current ATSC digital signal over the air with the built-in telescoping rod antenna or from an external antenna via the F-connector jack. It also has QAM for receiving direct digital signals from the cable company, bypassing the decoder box. Once you electronically scan the channels you want, they are stored in memory and remain their when the unit is off. Using the TV controls you can skip channels sequentially or hold the -/+ buttons down to change channels fast. With the remote you can go directly to a station using the numeric keypad. This is best for cable TV with hundreds of channels. You can also select between over the air and satellite signal inputs.
RECEPTION: I live 30 miles west of downtown Chicago. By using a Terk amplified antenna (13"x26") designed for NTSC TV, I was able pick up 40 channels, all but CBS, which is at the lowest end of the VHF frequency range. By comparison, the built in Haier telescoping antenna picked up only one UHF station.
EXTERNAL INPUT: This is one of the few portable TV's made with A/V inputs, for hooking up a VCR, camera, game, or DVD player. It also has a mini headphone jack.
POWER: It is equipped with a 2,000 mAh lithium ion battery, that is removable. The power LED light has three color modes indicating the power level of the battery: green for full charge, orange for mid charge and red for low charge. The TV only consumes 10 watts but I'm not sure how long a fully charged battery lasts. It can also be powered off of AC with the included 9V AC adapter.
EASE OF USE: The TV can be controlled by its array of buttons on the front of the unit or with the remote--although I don't know why you need one. All features other than volume and channel selection are adjusted through on-screen menus. The TV also has a sleep timer, aspect ratio setting, closed captioning, and language setting. The remote control is powered by 3 AAA batteries and the controls are well organized and easy to use.
MINOR COMPLAINTS:
1) Navigating the menus of features (not channel selection nor volume) using only the TV buttons is counterintuitive. It requires using the CH-/CH+ buttons to skip thru tabs horizontally and using the VOL-/VOL+ buttons to scroll thru menu options vertically. This is much easier to do on the remote control, which has 4 directional buttons for cursor control. Given the small size of the TV a remote is really unnecessary since you are not going to watch a 7" TV from across the family room. The controls on the remote ought to be on the TV itself. The instruction manual is sparse, leaving much to trial and error.
2) Since this is a digital TV, it either displays a TV station or the screen is black--there is no gradation, like a fuzzy image you can get with analog TV. With either a picture or black it is very difficult to know which way to position the antenna for the best signal. It would, therefore, behoove Haier to have an antenna signal strength meter on the display, much like cell phones have, to help aim the antenna for optimal position.
3) From a marketing standpoint, Haier could benefit consumers by offering an optional foldable amplified HDTV antenna for this TV to boost station reception. Like me, most consumers do not live next door to a transmission tower. Haier should also provide a carry case to protect the TV screen and keep it, the remote and AC adapter all together. Absent a case, this TV should at least have a carry strap.

Crystal clear picture.
by KoppyQB on August 18, 2010
Pros: The picture is crystal clear. A good reception is necessary. Or if you have a cable connection even better. I've had this for about a year now and I Love it! Especially during power outages.
Cons: There is nothing I don't like about this TV.

Power on problem as soon as 90 day warranty ended.
by ladydog8 on August 25, 2009
Pros: Unit worked very well when connected to a quality digital antennae. Very easy to use, scan, etc.
Cons: Called customer service. They told me since it is out of warranty to take it to an electrical shop for repairs. I called several and they tell me they cannot get parts if it needs any. I certainly does! Wasted $105. Won't buy Haier anymore.

Summary: I used this in an office building with a digital antenna near a window. When it worked, it was excellent but as soon as I started having problems there was virtually no customer support. I only used it for 45-60 minutes Mon. through Friday so for it experience trouble after only 120 days is unacceptable. I would pay to have it fixed but no one wants to work on it because they tell me they cannot get parts. I had another brand that worked flawlessly for 8 years until the digital change. Totally unhappy with the customer service or lack thereof!

Good but...
by hackinsat on October 21, 2011
Pros: Small size, good picture, good price, portable and has a built in battery.
Receives atsc and ntsc signals through tuner, and has av inputs.Cons: Digital tuner is weak. Could not get a single station with supplied antenna. Connected to my home antenna was able to pull in the stronger channels, but 3 channels failed to lock in. These channels lock perfectly on both my big tv and memorex converter bo

Pros: Rubberized, textured case; solid feel; $39 refurb. price Big Lots
Cons: Attached included telescopic antenna and scanned - nothing; attached rooftop ant. (which I know receives > 20 local stations)- nothing; attached Comcast DTA (converter box) which outputs to channel 3 - nothing. Returned unit after 2 days. I would have

Decent, cheap, digital, 12v TV
by richardschurman on July 21, 2010
Pros: Guess it is luck whether you get a good one. I also live in Seattle and I get ABC-NBC-CBS-PBS-FOX and a couple of indpendent broadcast so I have no complaints after 6 months of use (power outages mainly when it runs for hours waiting for news).
Cons: Battery life is not as long as Haier would like you to believe so we run it from a generator w. filtered 12 v/120v
Summary: If you buy it for under a $100 and the audio/video works and you are in a major metro area where there are strong broadcast digital signals it is ...

Worthless!
by paulinariz1 on May 1, 2010
Pros: The concept is good but it just doesn't receive any channels.
Cons: Not one regular channel would come in clear. If it did at all, it was choppy and the sound cut out with a loud buzz.
Summary: This TV is absolutely worthless. I tried it in the Seattle area and again in the Phoenix area. Didn't work in either areas. The only channels that came in ...

Poor audio quality made it useless.
by tamhigh on August 13, 2009
Pros: Good price. Easy to set up. Good picture. Fairly good reception
Cons: The audio was very bad and there are no adjustments. The sound was similar to that of an old transistor radio and was quite irritating. If I wasn't sitting close and focused in on the program, I was unable to follow the conversation.

Seems to work as expected
by syrbuff on July 17, 2009
Pros: Great picture. Good ease of handling. Relatively intuative controls. Remote.
Cons: Antenna unscrews if turned counter-clockwise. Antenna gets LOWSY reception. Tuner seems to lack sensitivity. Local stations "spotty" even with external antenna connected. Once stations are programmed, unit won't allow pickup of un-programmed channel.

Summary: I was intrigued with the concept of this TV, since my older analog handheld is 95% useless now. The Haier "71" promises a crisp clear picture with fairly good sound for a small unit, and the controls (via the remote) are easy to navigate. What I dislike is that the tuner doesn't receive as many stations (when connected to the same external indoor antenna) as my 13" 1980's Radio Shack analog TV does (when connected to a converter box). I'm missing 6 channels with this unit... which is somewhat annoying, and what's worse, is that after a scan is done, if a channel is selected that didn't appear in the scan, it IMMEDIATELY asks..."continue with the scan?" (without even attempting to search for the desired channel) and if you say yes... it scans FROM THE START again, goes through every station, and STILL misses the one I was trying to get! UGH!!
As far as the internal battery is concerned...... they say 6 hrs to charge (when dead) and runs for 2 hrs, when full. The battery begins to charge WHENEVER the adapter is connected to an outlet. Overall--- about a 7 out of 10. -
Nice piece of hardware but hardly useable
by not10cents on June 24, 2009
Pros: Nicely constructed. Easy to setup and operate. Very nice picture. Very portable.
Cons: Highly directional. Moving inches from one side to another or from one floor to another has a major impact on reception. Not like an analog signal. You either get reception or you don't.

Summary: We live about 40 miles outside a major mid-western city with access to 9 different DTV stations. The best I could do with the Haier was maybe two of the stations and this depended on whether or not it was in the backyard or on the 2nd floor of our house. Clear line-of-sight appears to be important for good reception hence the difference between the reception in our backyard (none) which is below the prevaling tree line and our second floor near the top of the tree line. Given the directionality of the reception, the Haier would not be suitable for viewing in a moving vehicle.
Understand that I do not fault the HLT71. The directionality problem is inherent with DTV. Unless you happen to be very close to a transmitter site, protability is somewhat problemnatic.
PS - Set works great with our household cable system.
