The good: The Archos 5 portable video player offers a large, high-resolution touch-screen display, Wi-Fi, music playback, photos, Flash video and game compatibility, a PDF reader, Mac and PC compatibility, built-in speaker, integrated kickstand, and optional DVR, GPS, and 3G capabilities.
The bad: The Archos 5 requires a proprietary USB cable for charging and transferring content, the glossy design is quickly marred with fingerprints, older Archos accessories are incompatible, some applications are still in beta, and you'll need to pay extra to activate many of the player's more desirable features.
The bottom line: The Archos 5 boasts an improved screen size, image resolution, and sound quality over its predecessor, but its Web browser and Flash media playback are disappointing for a product marketed on the strength of its Internet media capabilities.

Major Dissappointment
by icedcornholio on September 20, 2008
Pros: Beautiful screen (when it works)
Cons: Screen is wonky; non-standard USB interface, no plug ins currently available, ships with beta firmware, still slow to navigate

Summary: I was looking for a high capacitiy MP3 player that supports subscription services. When I read about the 6th generation Archos which also has built in Wi-Fi and video playback I was sold.
Once I turned it on was anther story, the LCD screen is very jumpy -- it's not a dead pixel issue but it almost looks like there's some sort of interference that's affecting the screen. I have to keep rebooting the player to get a viable screen that I can use to navigate.
Further the player ships with beta firmware and only beta firmware is available on the Archos website at the time of this writing.
Even worse, the plug ins that you're supposed to be buying aren't even compatible with the 6th generation archos player -- but they don't tell you that until after you've bought it and contacted support -- which then redirects you to the order takers. I was hoping to use this player with Tivo To Go but until the plugin is available, you are SOL. Tech support says it will be coming shortly but seriously , how can this not be done until after the player is released?
It took 8(!) hours to upload 10,000 songs (over 40GB) to this unit. The non-standard USB cable is extremely slow!
I was excited about this unit and couldn't wait to get it. Now that I have it, I can't return it soon enough. It's a major disappointment. I hope they can rectify this stuff, but I'm not waiting.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Machine malfunctions and customer service is atrocious
by saxcymbal on July 24, 2009
Pros: I like the idea that you should be able to load up the player with 120Gb's worth of CDs and all of this should be portable.
Cons: My machine seized up after loading HD with about 75 to 100 CDS. It became impossible to navigate around the HD.After meeting their requirements for warranty service I was given an RMA and told to ship my machine to them.....I thought for repair...
Summary: This is a company which makes a product of doubtful value and has a system of customer service that is arrogant and obstructionist to the customer. To cimmunicate with tech ...
Summary: This is a company which makes a product of doubtful value and has a system of customer service that is arrogant and obstructionist to the customer. To cimmunicate with tech support from their web site is the beginning of one of the most bureaucratic set of obstructionist procedures that I have ever experienced. If you phone the tel number for tech support you are on hold for 20 minutes then they tell you to leave a message and they will phone you back......welll believe me that never happens....and I called on a Wednesday which is what they call one of their less busy days. At one point, before the replacement machine was sent to me, I was able to actually get through and speak to someone and I asked the lady how the repair was coming along on my Archos 5....I asked to speak with the technician but she said that was not possible. She said that my machine was being recalibrated and that the HD would be OK....I had about 100 CDs on the HD and I didn't want to lose all of that because it took a fair amount of man hours to load all of that content. Then I got a package in the mail from Archos and it was not my original machine.....it was a new machine with a an empty HD and they kept the original packaging and the owners manual...also they chose to totally ignore a letter that I enclosed in the origianl package that I sent....and not respond to any of the queries that I had made......Now when I try to phone them I get the 20 minutes on hold but this time you can't even leave a message because the voice box is full. This machine cost me over $400.00 Canadian counting taxes and I really feel like I have been royally suckered. Would you go ahead and re-install 100 CDs on this new machine, considering how much time that takes, if you knew there was a good possibility that the screen would freeze up again and make navigation around the HD virtually impossible ?
