DPR-1260 Installation Resolution for XP
by steveganthner on September 24, 2007
Pros: Works like a champ

Summary: I bought the DPR-1260 after reading about some of the installation problems others had reported. The QIG was not accurate. The QIG says to connect the DPR-1260 to the network. I did this and was able obtain the address my router automatically assigned. I was even able to print a test page while connected with the wire. However, each time I disconnected this wire the DPR-1260 could not be seen by my computer (XP)and I could not access the DPR-1260 configuration settings page. Finally stumbled upon another frustrated user's experience after six hours and one call to D-Link tech support. I quit the call to tech support after it became clear that the techie couldn't get past the fact that I was connecting a printer that was not listed on the compatibility list.
To make a long story short I connected the DPR-1260 directly to the local connection on my laptop with the supplied CAT5 cable, used the address obtained from my router's configurations page, set the SSID, set the WEP shared key for my network's router and setup the printer that I had attached to the DPR-1260. After printing a test page (printers and faxes, right clicked on the printer that was added in the previous step to get to properties, clicked on print test page). I disconnected the wire and again printed a test page and voila ! success!.
D-link should be ashamed of their product support. Really... how much trouble would it be for them to list the experience of its custommers in making alternative ways of installing the server available to new custommers in their FAQs? Oh well, if I were a stock holder or owner of D-Link I would be furious that such a fine product is presented so poorly.10 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have used a number of print severs and can advise that if want a print server, adjust your expectations. You enter the realm of compatibility issues, arcane networking configurations and trade-offs.
Compatibility
I purchased this print server because it supports my All-in-one printer/fax/scanner. Many printer servers don't support such machines - always check compatibility of any print server you have in mind. The multifunction printer compatibility is an advantage for the DPR-1260. If I want to make a new printer available to the PCs on my wireless network later, the DPR-1260 can handle more, up to 4 total. Nice.
Arcane networking configurations
Entering IP addresses directly into IE, changing network configs 4 menus deep in XP, multiple reboots are the norm for print servers. This one, unfortunately, is no different. My advise to you: write down all your wireless router network configuration settings, track all XP settings you change, take a stress-relief pill, and prepare for some try-retry cycles. The manual and "quick set up" guide that comes with this device are not good. Thus the 4 rating.
Trade-offs
Print servers will not have the same functionality as your printer software. Typically, this means ink cartridge fill levels will not be supported by the print server software. However, in the case of Printer/fax/scanner machines, a lot of functionality can be lost. The print server makers can't possibly be expected to duplicate every function the OEM printer software provides, AND include that for every printer the user might have. This unit actually has easy to use scanner firmware, but you need to get used to accessing with IE (guess I can uninstall the HP softare). My wife thinks this is weird, and she is not wrong.
In closing, if you are tech savy and patient, the special functionality of this device can be enjoyed after the aforementioend stress-relief kicks in.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have had a chance to read the reviews and they were not encouraging, but being the daredevil and a 14 day return policy from the purchasing store I decided to see if this product was as bad as they say. It is not!
If you have XP you should be up and running within 15 minutes. I do admit that knowledge can read more into the instructions then what it says, so read them a few times before you begin. You should install with XP because It is the picture in the setup guide. After installation I found it to work well with Vista and XP, but I set up with XP because the instructions are wrote for XP. At this stage of the game it is good to have at least one computer with XP or a dual boot computer with both operating systems. I set it on a wireless, thou the instruction suggest you use a wired computer. The IP address on this unit is far from the address normally used by a router so the first part of the setup is very important that you get both to have the first 3 sets of number of the IP address. But again, do not touch the set up screen on your router are the IP address wired to your router setup screen which is usually 192.168.1.1. You need to know the routers first three sets to complete the setup
Page 6 should be followed to the letter using Start->My Network Places->Properties with a right click. You should make sure the "Connect using;" box in properties says the name of "your" router, only your router. You must change the router to match the D-link address because the third number "0" in the 192.168.0.10 is the problem with most intranet systems who usually have a "1" in that 3rd position 192.168.1.XX. To communicate with the printer server you need to change the IP address to make sure the first 3 sets (192.168.0.XX) are the same on the router and the print server with "XX" being anything other then "10" because that is the 4th address of the printer server, they suggest 28 for you router, use it. Go to a browser screen and type in the 192.168.0.10 and you should see the D-link setup screen. You must change the address in this screen to match the first three number of your routers IP, and the last one being a number not used by any others. I used 75 so I changed it to 192.168.1.75, because my original IP address of my router was 192.168.1.1 removing the third position 0 changing it to a "1" and changing the 4th position from 10 to 75. My D-Link number was now 192.168.1.75 with a subnet of 255.255.255.1 which should match the subnet of the router. Close the browser screen and go back to the Properties of your router and change it back to what it was which is usually DCHP which will erase all you have done, then hit button to make changes permanent. Type in 192.168.1.75 if 75 is the number you choose into your browser screen and you should be able to effectively connect to the D-Link setup screen and you should see up to 4 printers if you have attached them and connected the proper tabs. Change the SSID to the name of your router. Make sure the printer drivers for each printer are installed on all the computers you want to use in this environment or you must have the driver disk of each printer at each installation. I have not tried the All-in-One scanner abilities yet so the jury is still out on that one and that is the only reason I give it a "9".
I do believe this product is not getting the credit it deserves and the reviews have not done it justice. Give it a try and you may be presently surprised.6 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Works great after confusing setup

Summary: I had ordered this print server from Amazon.com because it was the lowest price from a trusted online merchant I found at the time. The first one delivered ended up being faulty and after 2 hours on the phone with D-Link Tech Support, was told to return it for another one.
Fast forward to a week later, and I got the replacement. I was able to follow the quick install guide and setup the print server wired to the computer. I had some difficulty getting the wireless setup working, but only because my knowledge of networking is marginal. I'm sure a person knowledgable in these things could've done it in a snap, since now that I know how to do it, it seems easy. The main problems I encountered were lousy instructions included, and poor level 1 tech support. The level 1 tech support person took me through a bunch of steps (following a script) that turned out to have nothing to do with the setup and was only wasted time. Once I was escalated to level 2 support, the knowledgable tech was able to succesfully navigate me through the required steps to get things working smoothly. If D-Link could just fire level 1 support and transfer customers directly to level 2, then things would be smoother.
The way I got things working, if anyone is having trouble:
1. Make sure the printer driver/software is installed on the computer.
2. Follow the quick install guide with the print server connected to the network with an Ethernet cable. Once you've run the setup wizard, set up the printer and successfully printed the test page, then keep the http://dlinkps-******.com page open and go to SETUP and then NETWORK SETTINGS on the left.
3.Login to the print server using your password and then set IP address mode to Static.
4.Set the IP address to whatever IP address was assigned to your printer when you first set it up wired.
5. Keep subnet mask the same and set Default Gateway to your router's IP address.
6. Click SAVE and after the reboot, go to SETUP and click WIRELESS SETTINGS on the left.
7.Make sure that all of these settings are the same settings as your wireless router, including the SSID (case sensitive), security mode, key length, and key.
8. Click save and after the reboot, go to SETUP, and run the PRINT WIZARD.
9. After the test page has been printed successfully, enjoy your new ability to print wirelessly!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Print Server with Range

Summary: I was a little leary about purchasing another D-Link product. My past experience with this companies components isn't very good. So I was really hesitant to purchase this DPR-1260. True to form, after 3hrs. trying to install a HP Officejet 7110 (which is listed as a supported multi-funtion printer) I'm ready to take this piece of junk back to where I bought it. I called Tech Support 3 times; finally giving up trying to speak to a preson form India who was unable to help. So I composed an email to D-Link Customer Support and still haven't received a reply as to why I can't install the HP Officejet. It's been 4 days now.
As for the setup and operation of the DPR-1260, it's pretty straight forward. Finally, someone wrote the Quick Install Guide where things happened as they should. I got one printer (Brother HL-1440) to hook up wireless and I have no complaints on the speed and range. I do like the web interface for installing the print server to the computer. I'll give D-Link credit there. That's a great install procedure. "One Brownie Point" there!
Would I suggest you buying one? Yes and No. Yes, it works great when you can get your printers installed. And NO...Come on guys, when I have a problem and need tech support, I'd like to speak to someone with out a heavy accent that I can understand. Must be that outsourcing most US companies are doing to cut costs. Those cost cuts do hurt on the buttom line...I'll be returning this product for a refund!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

It's a decent print server

Summary: Replacing a Linksys WPS54GU2. Essentially this model is very similar except I like how the drivers are attached to the print server better than the Linksys. You execute a utility right off of the DLink which is really handy. Installed 2 printers. First a Canon S750 which installed without any issues at all. Second a Minolta 1350W that had all kinds of interesting issues. Issue #1 was that the port assignment utility kept erroring out the Konica print monitor. My solution is simply not to use it an trudge forward. Issue #2 was that the printer port had to be manually assigned in the printer configuration. Issue #3 was that after all this it still wouldn't print. Solution was to go into the printer configuration and turn off SNMP as described in Dlink's support pages. After all this everything seems to work well.
Setup via the web based interface is typical of these devices. Everything is fairly intuitive and didn't feel like I needed help until the 1350W wouldn't print. Even then I found all the info I needed on their support site. Total time to setup was around an hour including configuring the secured wireless network settings.
You'll need to upgrade the firmware because Dlink apparently ships these with V1.00 (V1.21 is current as of the date of this review).
I also turn off bidirectional printing support in the printer configuration since it doesn't appear that the Dlink feeds back any info to your computer (like low on ink, out of paper, etc.).
I give DLink an 8 because that's about as high as I'll go without complete bi-directional support. The LinkSys I would give a 6 because of some intermittent connection issues and a clunky driver. If you need a parallel port connection the Linksys is probably the way you'll have to go. If all you need are USB connections this seems like a pretty good choice.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

I was able to ...Summary: After multiple attempts to configure the unit and hours on the phone with customer service, I am returning it as it does not work at all.
I was able to connect to the unit directly to my computer with a static IP 192.168.0.52 (as per the quick start guide), connect to the print server, download the print driver and print a test page (HP Laserjet 1200). I reset the IP address to dynamic and attached the device to my network (linksys wireless-g router). At this point, I can see the device on the network (using networkmagic) and can reach the printer configuration page, but am not able to print. The connection to the print server is unstable and requires repeated power downs of the print server to regain access.
I upgraded the firmware from 1.00 (shipped) to 1.21 (latest version from the web site) as per one of the other readers comments, but no improvement.
Repeated calls to customer service reinforced the commentary from other callers - slow responsiveness, extremely limited technical depth, grainy call connections and repeated hang-ups. The final operator told me that I had made too many calls on the unit and should return it - before he hung up.
Other commentary
The web site is light - FAQ has little depth.
The unit configuration requires a reboot of the device for each configuration setting - an annoyance that I would normally overlook if the product worked as advertised.
I do not recommend this product and I could not recommend purchasing any other networking product from Dlink.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Many speak uninteligble English, are clearly inexperienced and put you through repetitive motions while asking thier collegues what to do. Was hung up on 4 times. 2nd try at tech support: 3 hours, HUNG UP ON 7 TIMES. Same story as above. Tried to setup with a Linksys router. These people are unprofessional and grossly inexperienced and do not know what they are doing. I am a prior computer reseller.

Summary: I updated the firmare right away (from 1.00 to 1.20) using a wired connection. I connected to a HP DeskJet 882C that was NOT listed as a supported printer! It worked!
Of three computers (a XP-Home, XP-Pro, & 2000) I only had a problem with the XP-Pro running the file to set up the printer port (the setup just froze-not responding). I consulted the D-Link Support Webpage for how to do it manually. After setting it up manually, no problems.
I would buy again.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Nice interface and great features for the price. The reviewer who complained about lack of installation software should be ignored. Like most products of this type, all setup is done via a web browser interface. RTFM!
Unfortunately this product is not reliable. It only prints about half the time, and often the browser interface indicates that everything is working fine. I have tried both wired and wireless with no improvement in reliability. The only way to get it to start printing again is to unplug it from the power and pug it in again. Sometimes even this doesn't work and it needs to be unplugged again or else both the print server and the router need to be unplugged and rebooted.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.
