Warning: Does not work with many printers!

Summary: There is no disclosure on the box but this print server will NOT work with most multifunction printers and many regular printers. The device was easy to set up but it then could not detect my printer (the USB light was not lit). Linksys tech support told me to exchange the print server and after another trip to the store, the problem remained. Linksys then told me that they knew about compatibility problems between the print server and MANY printers. The most annoying thing is that they don't mention this on the box. EVEN MORE ANNOYING IS THAT THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE ME WITH A LIST OF COMPATIBLE PRINTERS!!! So, if you have a multi function printer (fax/copier/printer), don't waste your time buying this. And if you have a regular printer, make sure that you can return the print server before buying it, because there is a good chance it won't work with your printer. Very poor job by Linksys product development here.

Summary: I have been working with my home networking for about 3 years now and thought I new it all. So I tried to setup this printer server my own way. Which took me a couple hours to realize my way was not working. So I used the setup disc and followed it step by step.
Made sure the WEP matched the WEP on the router. Then "BAM" it works like a dream.
This is not a Multifunctional Printer Server. Printer/Fax/Scanners needs bi-directional communication with computers to scan documents and read ink levels.
(Bi-Directional means 2 way communication)
This is a great printer server for the average color inkjet or small monochrome laser printer.
I use this printer server with a Minolta QMS 1250W Monochrome printer.
Linksys has come out with a new Multifunctional Printer Server (WPSM54G). Which supposed have Bi-Directional Capability. It came out December 2006 and there is no reviews yet for it or information on Linksys Website. But you can buy it at Walmart.com for $110.Updated
I forgot to add that in the properties of your printer click off the bi-directional box. If you do not do this the printer will not work.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Works great after working to set it up
Pros: Error-free, fast printing once set up. Physically smaller size and lower price than others on market.
Cons: Installations instructions flat out wrong. Knowledge base not yet populated. Must call tech support. Disappointed that claimed WPA support is not provided. Print spooling must be disabled, so application sending job remains tied up until near end of print

Summary: I am a Network Engineer by profession and decided to test the Linksys WPS54G at home because there were so many conflicting reviews. The setup was fairly easy, but for the average home user I believe it could present some challenges. Follow some of these tips to make the setup easier. If your wireless network is setup with MAC filters or encryption, disable both of these prior to setup. You can reactivate them later after you have added it to your network. Configure the device from a machine that is hard wired to the network. Do not attempt to configure the device from a computer connected via wireless connection or it could cause problems. Make sure that whatever printer you want to use with the device is setup on your computer prior to installing the print server. Later in the setup, the printer configuration looks for the printer driver to be already installed on your computer. The printer configuration automatically installs a new TCP/IP printer port, so there is no need to manually configure one. There were also some questions in other reviews whether this device will work with multifunction machines. It will work fine if you only want to print. But the other functions will not work, i.e. scanning. It says right on the box that it is not recommended with multifunction devices. I have an Epson CX5400 and the scanning function would not work with it. Epson recommends using their wireless print server with their multifunction machines (part number: C12C824221 $179.99). Ouch! There were also some comments that the print server gets hot. The specifications say it will operate up to 104 degrees F under normal conditions. So I don?t really see this as a concern. Overall this is a good wireless print server, but not for multifunction printers.

Summary: This is an excellent print server. It prefers to interface with a Linksys router; but with extra effort it will work with others. The provided CD setup wizard is adequate up to a point. If you are using WEP security (with a Manual Key) it will not allow you proceed without entering a "passphrase". To continue beyond this point you must logon to the setup website usng the print servers IP address which should have been displayed during the initial setup using the CD. You may have to change the last number of the print server's IP address if you have other components using that same number. Once you make the change that is the IP address you will use to access the print server on-line. Contrary to popular belief the print server WILL work with MFP's. You will not be able to use the scan, copy or fax functions (wirelessly); but you can PRINT wirelessly. All you have to do is setup a standard TCP/IP port for the printer using the same IP address as the print server's. I did so with a Canon MP730 MFP. Dependable Tech Support depends upon who answers your call (language and sometimes knowledge base problems exist).

Summary: I wanted to connect my new printer to my wireless linksys router, so I bought this printserver. The directions are simple, however, they contradict themselves. For example, I use WEP 64-bit encryption. On the set-up step (step 6 or 7) it allows me to select the encryption type and fill in a passphrase. I don't use a passphrase, which seems fine, since below this field the instructions say that if I don't use a passphrase, leave the field blank and I will be able to manually enter my key on the next step. So, I leave passphrase blank and it doesn't let me proceed to the next step - telling me the passphrase must be 1 to 16 characters. So, after failing to find away around this, I enter something. When I come to the next page, it has nothing to do with my WEP key. So, of course, when it comes time to check the connection at the end of the set-up instruction by unplugging the connection to the router, the set up says the wireless connection fails. Obviously it fails because it never let me enter the key.
I try to use the printserver wired to the router first, and then configure it for wireless later, but this failed too. First, it said "Select Printserver" but wouldn't let me proceed unless I selected the printer, not the printserver. Nitpicky, maybe. But on the next step, the printserver fails and it tells me to change my computer's IP address to match. I check the IP address and it already matches.
Finally, I tried the linksys website. The support pages are a maze of steps with links to clarification on each step. I followed the instructions here as well - changing the IP address to static and attempting to access the printserver's page through explorer. This failed as well.
I am thoroughly disappointed by the useless and contradictory instructions and would not recommend this printserver to anyone.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Horrible Support, Lousy Customer Service.

Pros: Allowing wireless use of your printer(s) from various PC's or laptops.
Cons: Unfriendly setup to use. Sometime's the server has to be reset or refreshed through it's software setup OR being unplugged. I think the heat eventually causes unit to fail like mine did just outside it's 3 year warranty.

They won't do a darn think for me despite being just outside the warranty period with my print server failing totally. Some of the better companies would do this though. The bottom line: Why spend your hard earned money for something poorly made and lousy customer service?

Waist of Money.

Pros: Good to warm you hands on a cold night - The print server over heats. Does have a 3yr warranty, which you have to jump through a couple of hoops to get it replaced.
Cons: Says its compatible with the Canon MP600, then in a blog Linsys say its not. (Which is true, its not!)

Is this really too much to ask?
My Wireless-G music bridge doesn?t work like this and neither does my Wireless-G Print Server and I feel like I have been duped again.
I suggest that Linksys and other manufacturers of products like it make their products work first time, every time. I don?t think I will buy another Linksys or Cisco product until they make it right.
Unless you are a computer expert I would suggest that you not buy this product.
