WORKS GREAT BUT HAD TO CALL LINKSYS FOR SUPPORT
by runnerboy12 on May 4, 2007

Summary: I have used this product for over a week now and think it's great. I am now able to share my office printer without leaving on the office computer so I can access it from other computers. The only problem that I had was the linksys installation software couldn't install necessary files because I didn't know that you had to install the printer software on all the computers I just used the find printer tab in the print menu and windows pulled it off my network and set it up but you can't do that you must install your pinter software in all the computers that you wish to connect because it works like the pinter is plugged in right next to you via usb. Overall great product works for me and configured well for my wireless network security. I recommend this to anyone.

Installation way too complicated
by cwlee_klagroup on May 29, 2008

Summary: 100% of our small business network equipment is Linksys. That said, the installation for this unit was almost a disaster, but not for the Linksys user forum community. After searching Linksys' technical support information unsuccessfully for over an hour (having learned from other posts not to even try calling for support) I tried finding a useful post in the user forum. Within 2 minutes I found a wonderfully detailed explaination on how to manually install the device when the Configuration CD couldn't.
Key problems with Linksys's installation instructions and CD included:
1) Print Server can take up to 3-5 minutes to be recognized on your LAN (Conveniently not mentioned in the documentation).
2) Unlike the previous model, this print server did not automatically set up a printer port for the printer even after it found the printer - forcing me to follow the manual process described in the forum entry to set up a printer port.
3) The print driver installation for the HP4650 color printer failed on every PC the config disk tried to configure. Why the config disk even tried to install the driver when a perfectly good driver was already installed is beyond me.
Bottom line is that the print server is now installed and doing what it is supposed to do very reliably.
I just wish Linksys hadn't invested all their design effort making the installation process "idiot-proof" when it isn't. At least provide some "basic" information telling an advanced user how to manually install the print server and printer ports when the step-by-step config disk fails (all to often an occurence it seems after reading the other reviews of this product.)2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Huge improvement over the older model.
by rtuskey on January 15, 2008
Pros: Installed flawlessly on all 4 computers at home. WPA security. Never had to open the manual.
Cons: None yet, but I haven't tried to scan via network.

Summary: I upgraded from the older WPS54G to get the WPA security and the bonus of scanning wirelessly. The older print server was a nightmare since it used a proprietary printserver port that failed to install. The newer WPSM54G has been the easiest network component installation yet, and really supports biderectional communitcation to see which ink is low. I can't recommend this enough. The only reason I didn't give 10/10 yet is I haven't tried the multifunction capability. Otherwise, installation and use was childishly easy.

Service stinks - would not buy again
by lmp2002 on January 6, 2008

Cons: Did not work and could not get anyone via phone or chat to help

Summary: I waited 46 minutes on the phone to have someone take 10 minutes to get all my serial and model numbers and then tell me that the person I needed to speak to was busy. I was told they would call me back in 20 minutes. It is six hours later and still no call. The Live Chat is not Live as no one responds after they come on line. This service is totally different than my last experiences and if they have cut back this much I would not buy another product from them.
Updated
I finally received a call back from tech support at 11:45 PM (yes, just before midnight) and asked them to call me the next day - which they did.
As mentioned in earlier opinions - this device is only certified to work with a very limited number of printers. You MUST check to see if your printer is on the list (see their website) before even considering it.
The reality is more than the listed printers will work but then you are on your own. I was trying to set up a Brother HL-5140 (not supported) printer and managed to get it to work. When it does work it is a nice thing to have - but hardly worth the headaches.
Also, you must set up the Linksys drivers on each PC/laptop that you want to use and this is not a "smooth" process either. I needed to get support to correct some of the installation issues. Again, once corrected it worked.
In the end, you need to ask yourself - "Do I really have the time to go through this?"1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought this product NEW about 3 months ago, and the thing worked fine for a couple of months. It quit working so I called for support, but was told that the product was out of warranty and that I would need to pay for tech support. I the future, I'll avoid Linksys/Cisco products (yes, I am very tech savvy and know that Cisco's products are everywhere). Is there anyone out there that can stand behind their product? Certianly not Linksys/Cisco!

Difficult to set up -- but works great

Summary: I was able to get all computers to print by manually installing an IP port ( see Lynksys Forum). But was unable to get MFP to work until dl firmware and software (Dec 2009). And not only that I had to ignore SETUP in the main folder, but rather run SETUP from the utility folder. ( Again - this was only found by reading the forums )
Tiger Direct $24.99, can't beet the price... Also, note my MFP was not on the list, but worked perfectly -

Disasterously bad but expensive equipment
by Cameronlewis on May 20, 2009
Pros: It does support WPA encryption, whereas the previous, and much better print server, did not.
Cons: Even with Windows XP, the setup is awkward. It is not helpful when you have to have the computer beside the printer/printserver or have an ethernet cable that runs the length of your site. In my case, a largish house.
Summary: If you have a dated computer that sits beside your printer and thus does not actually need a wireless print server, this will work for you. Otherwise, forget it.

It's garbage
by Wiara on March 13, 2009
Pros: Absolutely nothing
Cons: Darn near impossible to setup in Windows Vista. Software frequently hangs-up. I have it stuck in one of my laptops and it won't uninstall. This is causing all sorts of problems in trying to get it resolved. Linksys support is no help.
Summary: Even though it would have been nice to have a wireless print server, I finally gave up and installed Belkin's Network USB Hub. It works perfectly with Vista and ...

Save yourself some money, pass on this Linksys POS.

- Manufacturer: Cisco
- Part number: WPSM54G
- Description: The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support lets you connect a multifunction USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work. The PrintServer is compatible with most USB multifunction printers, and allows full access to printing, faxing, scanning, and copying functions. Like any print server, users on the network can print anytime. The other functions are treated a little differently - any user can request access to one of the other functions, and get exclusive use of that function until his task is complete. Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly at up to 54Mbps via Wireless-G. The wireless option lets you put your printer wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printer it's connected to. And if you don't use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs. Your wireless data is protected by up to 128-bit WPA-PSK encryption. A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the big print buffer handles even large graphics-intensive print jobs. Let the Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support bring efficiency to all your home office tasks.
