Poor Hardware Support
by racer-x on April 11, 2005
Pros: Easy plug-and-play setup (if you have a compatable printer)
Cons: Lack of hardware support for a lot of printers. Poor, unorganized user support. Misrepresentation of limited hardware support on packaging, and website.

Summary: I tried setting up on 3 different printers at my home. Had no problem on older HP 1000 laserjet, but two newer printers the device would not recognize. Called user support, and eventually found out that this device does not work with alot of newer printers. Was very disappointed when the support tech did not having running list of known incompatable printers, and was not interested in models of printers I was having problems with. I use to like Linsys products, but this Cisco/Linksys version of the company has left a bad impression.

Summary: I think it is rather irresponsible of Linksys not to put a disclaimer to check for compatibility of your USB printer. I was told that my printer was not compatible based on their internal list. I told the support tech it is Linksys responsibility to post this list because this is now a very expensive paperweight. I have a HP Photosmart 7960 which was not detected by the USB port. I had an old HP deskjet 612c which I connected to the parallel port and it was detected. I can print from that but the idea was to have both printers. The troubleshooting section is no value whatsoever. You have to be remarkably ignorant of networking in general for it to be of any use whatsoever. The wireless was fickle in the initial setup but I had it running after 30 minutes and one hard reset as describe in the CNET review. I bought this unit solely on Linksys's reputation and my past experience with their products. This has been a major blemish and a disappointment. At $130 when I bought it this has been a complete waste of money. Linksys lost a customer.

Great product!
by Cauley108 on June 11, 2009
Pros: Easy to install using the setup disk. I have 2 printers hooked up, 1 via usb & the other via parallel. I can print wirelessly from the basement or outside to my office which is on the main level of my house. Product works great!
Cons: Can't believe I've seen so many complaints about this product. I've never had a problem with it, in fact it's worked flawlessly for me & I'm NOT an IT guy. Can't say anything bad about this product. The range was great & it never misses a print j

Horrible, horrible piece of equipment.
by officeslave on March 24, 2009
Pros: I like absolutely nothing about it whatsoever. The greatest disappointment was that Linksys stuff is usually top notch, with no problems at all.
Cons: The print server is a piece of junk. The walkthrough seems easy until things start to not work.
Summary: Wow. J-U-N-K. That's all I can say. I kept getting to a point in the walkthrough where the system couldn't find the server at all. Very frustrating. So ...
Summary: Wow. J-U-N-K. That's all I can say. I kept getting to a point in the walkthrough where the system couldn't find the server at all. Very frustrating. So then I call up customer support. I'm on the line for almost 2 hours with some lady from India (I think) who was pretty nice but very hard to understand. We tried so many different things, and at about the 2 hour mark I was so frustrated I thanked her for her time and told her I had to go. Whats worse, I bought the thing from Office Max, which now has a "no-return" policy on opened stuff. I'm going to go down there tomorrow (I'm too tired and frustrated now) and try to get them to at least exchange it for a different brand print server, maybe one that isn't junk, but if that doesn't happen it's $100.00 wasted, unless I can make the stupid thing work. That Office Max policy is bull. If everything is in the box, they should take it back, with a receipt. Anyways, I would not recommend buying it under any circumstances, even if you have to have floors crisscrossed with network cables. Buy some other brand, for your own sanity, and check the reviews BEFORE you buy, unlike me...

Summary: I went through 2 tech support calls and was impressed with their disposition and availability as well as technical approach. Although the second and last session was ended by giving up based on an apparent incompatibility issue between teh server and my printer (I have a Lexmark Z22 color printer) it was a well fought battle, that is, I truly believe the tech support department did their best effort. However, I did notgive up that easy and it ocurred to me to once more connect my laptop directly to the printer and surprisingly it generated a new printer file. I went back to wireless through my home network and using the new printer file, the server software immediately recognized it. Next I set up the static default IP for the printer 192.168.0.78 and rebooted the router and the server and it worked. In my opinion after following the instructions and loading the software, the main issues to get it to work were: turning off firewalls (to include XP's), virus, and spyware during setup; ensure printer worked from a defined setup from your computer (may need to be hardwired); the computer setting it up needs to be hardwired to the network wireless router. After that everything was easy. It has been in use in the network for a month now (I have two other computers) without problems or errors, with all firewalls on, spyware on, etc. I even get out of paper messages (printer is downstairs and I am operating most of the time upstairs). My wireless router is a D-Link DI-524. Oh! and I could not get it to print a test page.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Cisco
- Part number: WPS54GU2
- Description: The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer for USB 2.0 lets you connect a USB or parallel printer (or both!) directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work. Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly over 54Mbps Wireless-G (802.11g). The wireless option lets you put your printers wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printers it's connected to. And if you don't use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs. The USB port is compatible with USB 1.1 printers, as well as printers that support the new high-speed USB 2.0 specification for even faster throughput. There's also a separate port for a standard parallel printer. For even more versatility, you can connect two printers, one to each port, and send your documents to whichever one is most appropriate for each print job. A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the three megabyte print buffer size handles even large graphics-intensive print jobs. Let the Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer for USB 2.0 bring efficiency to your printing tasks.
