- Bottom Line:
- AMD's new Phenom quad-core CPU has little to recommend it over competing chips from Intel. The Phenom is marginally less expensive, but not enough to make up for its subpar performance. Unless AMD drops prices more aggressively, it looks like Intel will maintain its grasp on the CPU market for the foreseeable future.

The good: "True" quad-core design handles data efficiently; cheaper than competing Intel quad-core chips.
The bad: Not fast enough to justify the price savings compared to Intel's chips; next-gen Intel quad-core due out soon could further the performance gap.

The Phenom is marginally less expensive, but not enough to make up for its subpar performance. AMD Quad-Core Need I Say More QUAD-CORE
by blakedough on February 17, 2008
Pros: Your Getting a quad core for half the price of its competitor
Cons: What cons a company that wants to bring you something good for less money, who the hell does that anymore.
Summary: I appreciate AMD for doing what they do,They give you a premium product at a low price. If you on a low budget and what a hell of a ...

Its performance for me is optimal, and though I like intel I stay loyal to AMD, they never disappoint.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nothing but problems on an ASUS M3N78 Pro board
by W4833 on December 28, 2011
Pros: Could have been the board but I doubt it, plenty of RAM & running Win 7, 64 bit
Cons: Sucked from the git-go. Nothing but problems in the two years I've suffered with this thing. Can't wait to "adjust" it with a ball-peen hammer....but I'm not bitter!
Summary: It sucked. Turned me off AMD forever. ASUS usually pretty good stuff but that could have been a problem as well. Bears a bit more research if I can keep ...

QUICK, BUT A 3.0GHZ DUO CORE 64 BIT IS MUCH FASTER
by LYAK on January 6, 2011
Pros: ITS OK AND RUNS GREAT WITH WINDOWS XP BUT NOT NEAR AS FAST WITH VISTA
Cons: TOO SLOW FOR WHAT IT CLAIMS TO DO/SPEED
Summary: I HAVE RUN INTO SOME DUO CORE 64 BIT PROCESSORS THAT MAKE THIS ONE LOOK LIKE A 386 PROCESSOR

i disagree
by ussr4life on April 7, 2009
Pros: this cpu has so much potential as far as overclocking goes but i think it all depends on what OS you are useing vista doesent like to run on some of the top notch desktops/laptops so get ubuntu to milk it for all its worth
Cons: I dont find any cons exept that when you buy this cpu its stock heatsink is pathetic but thats the same with all stock heatsinks
Summary: bottom line this is a must have for any kind of gaming rig if you dont belive me watch this vid

Summary: While I agree with CNET's conclusion when based on the benchmark's alone, I'd like to take it out of the lab. In the past month, I've seen several refurbished HP Phenom-based systems for less than $600 from different vendors. In fact, Woot has an HP Media Center 3gig 640gig HD system on sale for $549 as I type. I have yet to see an Intel-based system for such a low price, whether refurbished or new. For what it's worth, I've had no issues whatsoever with it being refurbished. If you don't have problems within the 90 day warranty, chances are that you'll be fine for the lifetime of the system.
In no way am I recommending the HP system. I merely want to point out that sub-$700 quad core systems are already available and so far, they all use AMD chips. In fact, the above HP Media Center is sub-$600. And you even get a DVR.

After years of supporting AMD, I will no longer.
by KoldFusion on October 23, 2010
Pros: It does handle multiple apps very well. Run a game and Photoshop side by side with little performance degradation.

Summary: After YEARS of being a AMD supporter (Since the Barton core) I will no longer save a few dollars just to struggle with a laggy slow system compared to the Intel chips. I am truly disgusted with the performance of this CPU and that AMD continues to fall short of Intel performance. It is just not worth saving a few bucks.
