Although CNET did not review the 73-inch Mitsubishi WD-73833, we did review the 65-inch Mitsubishi WD-65833. Judging from their spec sheets, the two Mitsubishi rear-projection HDTVs are essentially identical but for screen size, so we expect the picture quality of the 65-inch model to provide a good indication of how the 73-incher will perform. For more information, refer to the full review of the Mitsubishi WD-65833.
(Originally posted on CNET Reviews)Product brief
Intro: The Mitsubishi WD-73833 is a 73-inch, rear-projection rear-projection TV.Compared to other rear-projection TVs on the market, it is expensive at around $3,530.
Noteworthy Features: Has a 73-inch screen size. This is larger than the average TV on the market today, but is to be expected for a TV of this price. With built-in HDTV compatibility, this unit can display images that are significantly sharper and more realistic than regular television, as long as the source is high definition.(It can easily render standard-resolution digital TV broadcasts and also depict the full resolution of widescreen DVD video.)
Weaker Features: None noted, given available product data.
Suitability: A rear-projection TV, suited for home theater. In general, a wide aspect TV such as this one is well suited for DVD movies recorded in the popular 16:9 format, as well as high definition programming.
Value: Overall, this TV's price seems hard to justify, with respect to its features.
Suggestions: (1) For assistance in shopping for a new HDTV, review CNET editors' Ultimate HDTV Buying Guide.(2) If donating or repurposing your old TV is not a viable option, CNET encourages households to recycle their electronics. Please explore the following website to find a recycling center in your area Electronics Take Back Coalition.
Receiving HDTV broadcast: The three common methods to receive HDTV broadcasts are via satellite-TV set-top box, cable system set-top box, and over-the-air reception from a digital HDTV broadcast station.
True HDTV: True HDTV programming is now available in three resolutions: 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Tuner options: An HDTV-ready satellite or cable box will act as an outboard HDTV tuner for your digital HDTV or EDTV set that lacks a built-in HD tuner.

Great TV for the price and size

Summary: Was waiting for months for the release of the Sony KDS-Z70XBR5 70". Found out that Sony postponed release until early 2008. I needed a TV so I looked at the Mitsubishi. At first, I was reluctant, but the picture was outstanding for a 73" TV. I took a blind faith leap and bought the Mitsubishi WD-73833. Straight out of the box, set up was a piece of cake. I did not have to manually configure any inputs, it auto-recognized all the inputs the moment I plugged in a cable and let me assign a name to it. First thing to watch was a bluray DVD. I turned on the 120hz feature and the picture was outstanding. I did notice that the TV speakers sound below par for a top of the line model TV. The bass sounds distorted and too much mid range. There was a noticeable high frequency noise coming from the fan that could be heard over the sound of the TV. After one week, the sound stopped and it has not came back after two weeks and counting. The prime placement for this TV is 3ft from the floor when sitting on a couch. If you have a typical entertainment center, you might want to make sure that your primary viewing area is at least 15ft away or you will be looking up at a picture that is not as bright (I noticed when I stood up from my couch, the picture was brighter than sitting so I had to move my couch back). HD content over the air quality shown on the model was outstanding. I bought a cheap RCA ?rabbit ear? metal antenna ($9.99), plugged it in, scanned the channels and was watching football in HD in less than 5 minutes. HD content from the cable company was the same result. Even my wife loves the TV. The overall fit and finish of the TV was excellent. Besides the minor problems I mentioned above, the set is great.

One GREAT TV!!!

Summary: I just upgraded from my 62" RCA HDTV to this. My RCA was a very good TV ($1500.00 more than the Wd-73883 too) but 5 years old and lots of hrs. on it. I did some research on this new TV, there's not much info, being it's so new, but everything I saw was good. So I bought one. I could not be happier, this TV is GREAT. I heard a few people complain about the fan noise, well I can tell you it is nonexistent in mine, in fact when I was hooking it up the fan made me jump a little, I was behind the TV making connections, and it blew on my arm making me jump, as I could not hear it running, (even behind the TV inches away) I was not expecting to have a little wind run across my arm. The connections are simple, I have a 3500 watt surround sound system that can get a bit confusing to hook up, but the multiple HDMI's and multiple RBG's made it quite easy. I do wish it had optics though. (I guess there getting old fashion now) I can't wait to try the 3D glasses hook up, "when they come out!!"
The NET command was a BIG surprise! I love it. One remote for almost everything and it can all be put in a cabinet with closed doors. One button ON/OFF for everything, change from SAT to OFF AIR or DVD ETC. it changes the receiver "automatically" to the receiver Chanel you selected for that device(GREAT FEATURE) I've heard the internal speakers suck and they probably do, I don't think anyone with a 73" HDTV will be using them anyway. (never saw a set with good speakers)

I did find the 120 refresh rate a little much when I turned it on, but I'm only 13' away from the screen, and it was not a fast action show.
Overall, "I could not be happier", I only had two other choices in mind, and they were, a 70+" flat panel, or a HD projector both were over $11,000. and that was out!
I do not think you can get a better TV than the WD-73833 for the money, PERIOD!
I don't know if I can say this but I bought the TV from LCD.com. (AND I got the 5 year warranty, 6 years total) my RCA had a problem 1 month out of warranty, and RCA would not help me. LCD.com did exactly what they said, TV was on time, warranty came fedex, BUT they do not return phone calls with info I requested (a few time too) So once you buy it, your on your own with them.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Set up on the 73833 was so simple, the picture it delivers is the best I've ever had. However three hours of watching I could hear distortion from the speakers, low tones rattled quite badly. The speakers will be replaced today under warranty, they have not been updated so it remain to be seen if it will be the same. Other than the audio the Tv at this point is great.I am impressed with the clarity and color. I've owned it for 2 weeks. I will update reviews as time goes on.

Impressive All Around - The Best 70+ Inch HDTV for $4k

Summary: I waited 6 months after getting this display to write a review, because I wanted to make sure I'd really put it through it's paces. All I have to say is: do not hesistate to buy this unit if it's one on your list. I have just about every device you could imagine connected to this monster and it makes all of them look great: PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii, Gamecube, PS2, DirecTV, HTPC, etc.. The picture is easy to calibrate (if you know what you are doing) and looks great in low and bright light. My unit is quiet and I only hear the fan when I shut if off and it cools the bulb down. The 120hz is amazing and produces sharp smooth motion during fast action stuff like the NCAA Tourney. The only complaint I'd have is the piano black casing does take special care in keeping it smudge free and clean, follow the inclosed instructions and use the cloth provided or you will scratch it. Also, it can take a few seconds to switch from one format to the next when switching sources. Other than that it's every thing I wanted and then some.

Great picture but not compatible with highend upscaling receivers
by mylit on February 10, 2008
Pros: Looks great and the picture is clear as long as it can get 1080p/i signal
Cons: Not compatible with HDMI upscaling
Summary: My high end Sony receiver is virtually useless because the TV will not let me use the HDMI features. It does not support HDMI switching.
