Used to be a killer radio, but now it's mediocre

Pros: Small and compact. A good one is an "overachiever," pulling in signals way beyond expectations (not now).
Cons: The last 2 models I've ordered are very ordinary with mediocre to poor reception. Say goodbye to the giant-slayer.

Summary: My wife always said this was the best gift I ever gave her, and she went to sleep every night listening to the BBC. Then she left it behind on a trip. We ordered the same model 3-4 years later--twice--and neither of the two replacements could draw flies. Where did the reception go? What happened?
