The best Harmony remote

The Best - Let the manufacturer do most of the programming.
by Tex on June 10, 2005
Pros: Could not ask for easier control of your components. Nor could I have asked for better support! Great people.
Cons: Takes getting used to but then it seems that all new audio and video equipement does.
Summary: I have had nothing but the greatest and friendliest support from these people. They seem to guess what my need is and respond very quickly.

The products themselves are quite unique...having the ability to download from the manufacturers website all the necessary info about your components and then integrate it so that a push of one button can turn on and adjust(or off) many components from different manufacturers.

Best Hard Buttom Remote Alive
Pros: Easy! Set up take a few minutes online. Quick USB update the remote and you're off. My brother took 5 days to configure his $900 Pronto. I paid $151 and it's way better, Ha Ha Ha. I called tech support to do a special config, it took them 3 minutes t
Cons: None, and i mean none.

Nice, but a few too many buttons.
Pros: Activity-based interface simplifies operation immensely! On-remote EPG is a great idea. Innovative nav pad saves space.
Cons: Must aim remote at devices while entire series of commands are sent, or risk losing sync. Buttons are rather small and densely packed (easy to mispress); nav pad is a bit awkward to use. Screen navigation is a little awkward. Too many sticky function mode

Great software, shoddy hardware

Summary: The summary says it all. It's a joy to use the Harmony software, but my 676 was a bust. The battery cover soon becomes unstable and falls off the remote repeatedly. I eventually had to use tape and rubber bands to keep the thing together. And the rubber buttons eventually become unusable. I had to push the off button 50 times before it eventually worked. Their stingy warranty policy meant that this not-cheap product was really a disposable toy. If somebody else offers a product using their software, go for it. But Logitech's hardware isn't worth the money.

A very talented Remote!!
by edcherylx on January 1, 2007
Pros: Controls everything we own, very customizable, unique one button push activity concept.
Cons: Customization options thru the web are a bit difficult for novices.

Set up online was easy, logitech instantly knew the firmware on the remote was out of date and updated it. Logitech also instantly knew the software we just installed from the CD was out of date and instantly asked us to update that.
After updating both, we proceeded to select our exact equipment for TV, Cable box and DVD player. All our devices were contained in the database. The software instantly set up the remote with normal actions assumed.
The update action from the web to the remote takes a little while to execute, but it's not an issue.
Once the remote is updated, is says welcome to your remote on the screen. We disconnect from the USB and tried it out.
Hitting the "Watch TV" activity, amazingly turns on our cable box and turns on the TV, it then proceeeds to turn the TV to the correct input. Pressing OFF, also amazingly turns off the TV and turns off the cable box. How cool is that?
Hitting the "Watch DVD" activity was just as slick - the remote turned on the DVD player, turned on the TV, set the TV tuner to the correct input for the DVD. We are amazed!!
OK, although that sounds all so simple, there were some bumps in the road. For example, if you use the activity button to say "Watch TV". The remote knows the cable box is on and it knows the TV is on. If you forget to use your remote and you turn the TV off yourself, you will be out of sync between what the remote knows the state of your equipment is and what it actually is. Because of this problem however, logitech has ingeneously added a help button. So let's say you press "Watch TV" and the cable box goes on, but your TV does not, you just hit HELP and the remote will ask you what is wrong. It will ask is the TV on? you answer No, it sends the on signal, corrects itself for the next time and asks again, is the TV on now? and you answer yes. The next time everyting will be fine as long as you do not manually change the on/off status of your equipment and let the remote handle it.
Additionally, in order for the remote to set the TV inputs correctly it must cycle thru what it knows are the sequence of your specific TV. For example: If yours has Video 1, Video 2, VGA, Input A, Input B. If your Cable box is hooked to Video 1 and your DVD is hooked to Input A. The remote must send a "changeinput" signal to loop past the ones it doesn't want. So to go from Watching TV to Watching DVD, it would send 2 "changeinput" commands. So if you should get out of sync between what the remote thinks the TV input is set to and what it is actually set to, you would do the same help command and the remote will correct itself. It's also important to make sure via the online software that the remote has the same exact inputs list as your TV has, we had to adjust the list to match. The original list loaded to the remote when we first selected our TV had 2 extra. Once we changed the list to match everything worked better.
Another thing that happened to us, is that since you only have to hit 1 button "Watch TV" and the remote proceeds to send all these signals out, you kind of forget you need to keep the remote pointed as if your hitting those same buttons yourself and we tended to just toss it aside (that will take some mind retraining on our part). But even when that set things Off, the help fixed it.
There were a few commands that did not default and we wanted to be able to use them. No problem, the online software lets you manually learn a command from a remote and name it. So we learned one called "View" which is used for PIP control. We called it ViewPIP and it instantly learned it. We then assigned ViewPIP to one of the customizable buttons which are in the screen. It works beautifully!!
Another great feature is that the remote is much more responsive than the original remote which came with our tv, this is because it has two IR transmitters angled to allow for greater signal catching by your devices.
Theres so much more you can do with this remote, we are only beginning to realize how much more customizable it is!!
All in all we highly reccomend this remote for folks who are tech savy. For folks who are a little be more confused by technology, they might need to have some help setting it up, but it would be worth it to make things easier for them.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I am very satisfied with this remote control especially for the $89 price (after rebates). Battery life is acceptable at about 3 to 4 months. It?s simple to use after programming. (Friends and family don?t need a training course to use it like some other "do-it-all" remote controls.) After using it for about 10 months, I can solidly recommend this product.

Summary: I just picked up the Harmony 676 to use with my home theatre setup. I was able to setup my entire system in about 25min. This remote has replaced 7 other remotes. (TV, DVD, Cable box/PVR, CD, VCR, Stereo, Media Center PC) I love the fact that I can press one button (I.E. watch movie) and this remote will turn on my TV, set it to the correct video input, turn on the dvd player, and turn on the stereo tuner to the correct input. The buttons for volume then control the stereo, while the play, stop, etc.. control the dvd. This is a must have for anyone that has a stockpile of remotes on their coffee table.

Not quite as efficient for all devices.
by Melysintat on March 20, 2005
Pros: Easy to use, good button placement, web progammable.

Summary: This remote had a quick installation and was easy to set up through the web. However, while my TV and Stereo work with no problem using it, getting my TiVo to work as easily as the orginal remote wasn't the case. And worse than the TiVo getting my XM radio to be controlled, even through it was in it's set up, has been very frustrating as it still doesn't control the device as I'd like it to. I keep tweaking the set ups on both the TiVo and my XM device but neither works near as well as the original remotes, and the XM is far from perfect at this point. Great idea, but far from perfect.
