Logitech Harmony 1000 price range: $208.00

The good: Logitech's first tablet-style universal learning remote incorporates both IR (infrared) and RF (radio frequency) wireless operation and includes a rechargeable battery and a docking station. Compared with other high-end tablet-style remotes, it's less expensive, and like other Harmony remotes, the 1000 is Web-programmable and compatible with Windows and Macintosh machines.
The bad: For those on tighter budgets, the Harmony 1000 is going to appear pricey, especially when you consider that no RF module is included. In addition, this model lacks some of the design flexibility (you can't design your own buttons or customize screen layouts, for example) that many high-end remotes offer, and setting up systems with more than five or six components can get pretty tricky. There's no easy way to use the 1000 in more than one room. And finally, because of the large color display, battery life is mediocre.
The bottom line: Though it lacks real multiroom capabilities and may not offer quite the flexibility of competing high-end tablet-style remotes, the swanky Logitech Harmony 1000 can be programmed by the average consumer, which saves the cost of hiring a home installer to program it.

Great product....better value

Summary: For all the people that had a hard time programming this remote...try a crestron or pronto. How easy can it get? Is it that hard to locate your model numbers or something? I am a home installer and have spent days programming pronto's. I purchased the 1000 for my living room and had it ready to use in a little over an hour. I mention the price being good because I purchased new unopened on Ebay for 300. I was also able to get the extendor for 60 dollars. Only benefit of the Pronto is the ability to change the button format. But for 500 dollars less (400 for remote, 400 for professional install), Ill deal with it!

I can control my entirely home theatre (HD TV, Receiver, Ipod, Tivo, HD DishNetwok, DVD/VCR combo, 5 disc CD player, HD DVD ).
In a normal use (all days, 2 hours, excep for the weekends that I used it more) the battery life is 6 days, which is not bad at all.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Apparently I pressed the touch screen too hard and it cracked. Think about that: it's a touch screen, and you have to press it softly. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So now I can't read anything on my screen. What kind of shoddy material is this made out of? Ever heard of gorilla glass? Your screen is pathetic. To make matter worse my remote was still covered under warranty but they refused to send me a replacement or refund because they said it was my fault. For touching a touch screen too hard??!! Are you kidding me?! I'll never buy another Logitech product ever again. I did get the last laugh though. I know for a fact I prevented 2 of my friends from buying these remotes after they heard my story. I also posted my story on fb and told everyone I know, including posting terrible reviews on every website I could think of. It would've been cheaper for the company to send a replacement than to continuously lose business because of me. Haha.

Summary: When I first purchased every was good except my amp wasn't set to the correct mode (program) It took threee weekends and 20 hours getting through leve 1 and 2 support, every time the would change something in the software it introdeuced a new problem Finally level three support returned to the original download and in 5 minutes the problem was corrected. About a year ago the unit locked up and I couldn't bring it back to life. So r I reloaded the software and now I get two chalange screen when you turn it on or off. I can turn it on to Watch TV and switch to watch a movie but can't swith back to watch Tv sucessfully without turning it off first. If I change any of my components and have trouble I'll need to pay for support This is a $500.00 piece of junk in my opinion.

Nice once you get it set up correctly
by digitlacid on March 10, 2011
Pros: Once the device is programmed and you have worked out the kinks (telling the unit not to automatically shut-off unused devices, et cetera), it is an awesome remote.
Cons: I still find little things that need adding from time to time (yellow button for the Blu-ray player), so that means another trip to the computer to update and restart.
Summary: My wife is not a huge fan and prefers to use the old remote(S), but as a gadget guy and a proponent of new shiny, I really enjoy using ...

More than a bit touchy
by begladstone on March 6, 2011
Pros: I like the ability to replace a handful of remotes with a single remote. Has templates for nearly every imaginable device.
Cons: Lots of reboots. Touchy when updating firmware and functions.
Summary: I like not needing multiple remotes (at least most of the time). One remote controls five devices. Every device I have ever connected is in the Logitech database.

Unfortunately the Harmony 1000 is touchy. Once every two or three days I have to re-boot the 1000. This is a double pain since a re-boot require opening the battery compartment, removing the battery, waiting a few seconds, reinstalling the battery and waiting for the re-boot to complete.
A second problem comes up when it's time to update the firmware or add or change a device. The USB connection is touchy. I cannot use a MAC laptop to update. Fortunately I have PCs with better USB connections. The update process itself is fragile often requiring two or more tries to get the updates to take. -
Looks better than it works, impractical, poor quality
by ZyanceBoy on January 24, 2011
Pros: Easy to see in the dark (this was a primary goal), easy to use software for basic setup. Good concept.
Cons: Touch screen is inaccurate; soft keys are too small (and not configurable), so wrong keys get accidentally pressed. Has somewhat of a delayed response. Occasional lockups require power cycle. Sometimes the software does not recognize the device.

Summary: Touch screen is inaccurate and soft keys are too small (and not configurable) which makes for a unit that causes much frustration when wrong keys get accidentally pressed. Also, the unit has somewhat of a delayed response. The response is not as good as the standard remotes the come with the equipment. Occasional lockups require the battery compartment to have to be opened up to remove the difficult to get at battery to power cycle the device. Sometimes the software does not recognize the device wasting lots of time despite the fact that I have the latest software and firmware. The implementation of the concept is poor. Although I was initially happy with the product, the negatives (which I was unaware of at first) are persistent enough to diminish the usefulness of the product. I regret the purchase and would not purchase it again. I think Logitech has failed in terms of product quality. The support phase seemed too short also for the money that I paid for the product. Logitech has already moved on to the next generation of the product (the 1100 series) and left the 1000 series owners in the dust. If the software allowed full customization, some of the small button problems could be mitigated to some degree and make the product tolerable, but I don't think Logitech is going to invest any more money into fixing this. Logitech should have looked to Apple for touch screen technology. I would avoid all of Logitech's touch screen based products.

Has to relearn setups if not used exclusively
by leezureworld on December 4, 2010
Pros: None. Oh wait, it makes a pleasant noise when it communicates with receiver.
Cons: Where do I start. This very overpriced remote can't remember functions if I switch channels using my satellite remote. It never remembers codes and set up steps and when re programmed, it takes forever to communicate with IR receiver.
Summary: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Constantly freezes
by kirkcor on September 11, 2010
Pros: Relatively easy set up once you have all software updated
Cons: Freezes constantly. Must take out the battery then reinsert it to reboot the remote and resolve the issue. This happens several times with each use. Updates of software and firmware won't resolve the issue. Logitech calls this a "feature"
Summary: Potential to be a great product but Logitech's inability to provide support or a fix makes usage incredibly frustrating.
