The good: PC-programmable universal remote; Windows and Mac compatible; activity- and device-based control; strong backlight.
The bad: Only controls five devices; two nearly identical Harmony models have more buttons and control more devices; numeric keypad buttons are too small and grouped too closely together; Web-based interface might intimidate nontechie users.
The bottom line: The Logitech Harmony 510 is a good PC-programmable universal remote, but you should opt for one of the two nearly identical Harmony models instead.

Great investment!
by firedupintx on January 1, 2010
Pros: Setting up the remote is very easy! connect via USB and follow the Wizards. Easy as pie.
Cons: The update of the remote takes a little more time than I would like but it works.

A great universal remote!

Pros: Eliminates up to 5 remote controls
Allows for additional "Activities" outside of the out-of-the-box four it comes set up with.
Allows you to establish custom buttons (up to 4) for each "activity."
Well back lit.Cons: Small screen that forces you to scroll through many pages of your device's controls.

Summary: Pay little attention to the CNET rating. The Logitech Harmony 510 actually gets a consumer rating of 4+ stars on most any site, including this one. It's biggest limit is that it only allows for 5 devices. However, it does allow for more "activities" than just the basic four out of the box; and it has the ability to set up custom buttons for every activity as well. It's a well spent $80.
Just a couple of additional notes for you:
Updated on Dec 21, 2009
1. The ability to set up the four custom buttons is not made clear at all in the basic instructions included in the box. You must control them through the software you install. Look for the "Customize button" button for each Activity you set up.
2. The set-up and software are easy enough. You may have to look around some to find what you are looking for but it's simple enough. Once you register your account, you only need your device's brand and model number to get going. -
Beautiful - can lock away five other remotes!
by DeeJay57 on December 11, 2009
Pros: least expensive of the Harmony remotes family - can literally perform any function or combination of functions - totally customizable, you can set buttons however you like - has the ability to "learn" from your existing remotes
Cons: programming the remote would be difficult for non-techies - I almost had to call the help line but persisted and was successful in the end. The number buttons are small and close together.
Summary: I'm tickled with how convenient and functional this device is - no more complaining from my wife about too many remotes!

Easy to set up with full control.
by cmmiles78 on November 30, 2009
Pros: The web-based set up is very easy and you get true control over all your components.
Cons: Only controls 5 devices and there is a rattling noise in the remote. I returned the first one and got a new one, but it also had the same rattle noise. ???? I'll be contacting Logitech for answers.

Summary: I've only had it for a limited time but it really does a great job. I have a Sony television, a Sony home theater system, AT&T (Motorola) U-verse HD-DVR STB, Apple TV, and a Wii. Before the 510, I had 4 remotes out. It took 3 to listen to the Apple TV alone! I was so happy to see that it controls the Apple TV and now it is so easy to listen to our music. The U-verse STB is also fully controlled by the remote. There was no loss of functionality with the DVR except the 7-sec quick rewind button. I can't control the Wii because it uses Bluetooth, but I was able to set up the TV to the right input and the 5.1 system to the right audio settings. Good buy!

for those w/ home theaters... just not the high end.

Pros: PC and Mac compatible. Comfortable in the hand, not heavy, but solid. Sized like a normal remote. The 4 color buttons and the alpha-numeric keypad are perfect for DirecTV users. Supports a variety of products... even VUDU! Backlight.
Cons: For me, if I could add one more device, it would be perfect. Otherwise, this is the best remote that I have ever owned.
Summary: I use this remote to control my Samsung TV, DVR, Yamaha reciver, Panasonic BD and VUDU player.

The biggest selling point for me on the remote was the 4 color buttons and the alpha-numeric keypad. I have DirecTV and use the color buttons for +/- 12 hrs on the guide, favorites, menu options etc. I have not found a remote yet that has those simple buttons. Those color buttons will also translate to DVD players... very handy. Also, I like to use DirecTV's search function and the alpha-numeric keys allow me to speed through my typing. It's surprising that more remotes neglect to put some letters on them. I've got to expect that more components will use alpha-numeric keystrokes to speed data entry. Two simple little features, yet the other highly touted remotes do not have them.
Everything works fine. I was really surprised that my receiver works so well with the remote. Typical Yamaha, tons of functions that can not be replicated with a normal all-in-one. Although all the functions appear over 23 screens on the remote, they are all there in the counter-intuitive native Yamaha nomenclature. No complaints and nothing new to learn.
The macros are simple and the software interface was intuitive to me. The remote feels balanced and solid. It's not heavy, and is not oversized. I had a POS Phillips/X-10 remote that weighed about 20 lbs and was about 12 inches long. This is nothing like that.
It looks like the editor did not like some of the missing functionality [vs other Harmony's] and wanted a charging cradle and it was too close to another Harmony and some other whiny garbage. I figure that my AV set-up is as good or better than the majority of people and this remote covers everything. Let's face it, what are you doing with your system? Watching TV and screwing around with your DVR with the occasional BD that you want to watch in surround sound. This is all the remote that you need. I highly recommend it. The only thing I wanted was one more device so I could control my lighting. But that extra item isn't worth losing my DVR buttons and isn't worth gaining some cradle that probably won't work worth a damn.
