Logitech Harmony 510 price range: $149.99

The good: PC-programmable universal remote; Windows and Mac compatible; activity- and device-based control; strong backlight.
The bad: Only controls five devices; two nearly identical Harmony models have more buttons and control more devices; numeric keypad buttons are too small and grouped too closely together; Web-based interface might intimidate nontechie users.
The bottom line: The Logitech Harmony 510 is a good PC-programmable universal remote, but you should opt for one of the two nearly identical Harmony models instead.

Poor Man's Harmony - I'm a Happy Camper
by anthonypena on August 13, 2009
Pros: Easy set up, does exactly what it says it will do, remote feels like solid and quality construction
Cons: Unlike the Harmony, only supports 5 devices, no fancy touch screen, and doesn't come with rechargeable batteries and recharging cradle.
Summary: If money is not at all a concern or you need to support more than 5 devices, then go ahead and buy the Logitech Harmony. The CNET reviewer didn't ...
Summary: If money is not at all a concern or you need to support more than 5 devices, then go ahead and buy the Logitech Harmony. The CNET reviewer didn't like this model, because other older (and equally cheap) models have more buttons. That's fine if you're the only person who will be using the remote. You can then take the time necessary to learn how to use and master all of the confusing and mysterious buttons on the older cheaper models. Those of us looking to simplify our lives AND the lives of our loved ones will be happier with this inexpensive redesigned model having fewer mysterious and difficult to master buttons. Logitech appears to have belatedly discovered in the design of their newers remotes that sometimes... less is more...
Prior to setting up, just be sure you have the model numbers of all your devices and then set up will be (relatively) painless. My media life is now 1000 times simpler. When I want to switch from watching TV to watching a DVD movie, the remote knows all of the necessary settings. The most common and important settings have dedicated buttons. The lesser used functions are also available, but you'll have to scroll a little to find them.
Unlike a typical dumb universal remote, for most functions, you don't have to push a button to switch between controlling, let's say, the Cable box or the AV receiver. For me and loved ones this one thing is a god send. If you want to change the channel, then you change the channel... if you want to turn the volume up or down, then you turn the volume up or down. Makes life (for those using a Cable Box, TV, and AV receiver) so much simpler.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

For the price I paid - this is perfect!

Summary: I bough this for $49.99 which was at least $40 less than the Harmony 550. If you don't need more than 5 devices it is definitely worth going for the cheaper model. Also this is a vast improvement over earlier models like the Harmony 659 this replaced. The LCD screen automatically shuts off and a motion sensor turns it back on when you pick up the remote. It lights up and reminds you to keep it pointed at the TV while it is setting up the activity. The help mode is also better at fixing problems when the happen as I've noticed it generally requires fewer steps.

Easy to set up
by timetest on March 1, 2009
Pros: The software is easy to use and setup, it has a huge database of devices it supports.
Cons: The buttons could be better, I don't care for the layout.

Summary: This remote comes with the Blu-ray buttons which is a huge advantage and like another review said I can't understand why the Cnet review doesn't mention this. The Cnet review seems to think that controling only 5 devices is a drawback but again like the other review, past a certain point controlling a large number of different device with one remote becomes awkward anyway.

One of the better universal remotes I've used
by sondhead on January 14, 2009
Pros: Blu-ray red, green, yellow and blue buttons, just enough buttons without being too much
Cons: Still not as comfortable to hold as normal remotes

Summary: I don't understand why the CNET editors don't talk about in their review the one feature that sets this product apart from any other Harmony Universal Remote--the Blu-Ray color buttons at the bottom. If you have a Blu-Ray player and not gads of tech to run with this remote, this is definitely a better choice than the alternatives they suggest.
I think a lot of Universal Remotes are so feature packed that they become quite difficult to use. At a certain point, it becomes easier to just use all the separate remotes. This unit is low on the totem pole enough that it does its job while still being pretty easy to use.
This is my second Harmony remote, and I hated the first. I am loving this one so far, so I highly recommend it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good features, but very fragile
by bhwiens on March 28, 2010
Pros: Very easy to configure, the help feature makes it easy to deal with your mistakes, glowing buttons are useful in changing light conditions
Cons: The screen is incredibly fragile. I have now had two remotes, and both have had the screen broken within less than a month of purchase. Although I have 4 teenagers, I find it hard to believe that the design didn't account for some rough handling.
Summary: If you can guarantee that the remote will never be dropped, thrown or kicked, it's a great price point for a wide feature set. If you have children, or ...
Summary: If you can guarantee that the remote will never be dropped, thrown or kicked, it's a great price point for a wide feature set. If you have children, or have a tendency to leave your remotes lying around, it's just a matter of time before the screen is broken, and the remote is unusable.

I love this remote!
by Dnepr Dave on March 2, 2010
Pros: Easy to set up, just be sure to have the name and model number of all your devices you want to control before you start. I like the back-lit controls. Controls make sense and all are easy to access..
Cons: I can't think of anything that I don't like about it.

Summary: The Cnet reviewer is a bit of a tech snob. The rubber number buttons grip your fingers well and allow a larger back-lit area, easy to see in the dark and they feel solid. Who needs another battery charger to lose? AA batteries are cheap and they last a long time. The back-lit screen emulates any extra buttons you may need. It eliminated five remotes and anyone can pick it up and use it, no confusion.

Nice remote but does not play well with Sony LCD TVs.
by maswind on February 24, 2010
Pros: Convenient, well organized, I especially like the "activity" macros.
Cons: I had a horrible time with the remote and my Sony LCD TV. Specifically, the input changing function. Customer service was great, but it took going through three levels of customer service to get someone who could make the remote work reliably.
Summary: I do like the remote, which was given as a gift. It took a bit too long to set up, but it was, it works quite nicely. I believe I ...

Great bang for the buck
by devast8r3436 on February 11, 2010
Pros: It controls the main components in a home theater, Great layout, Bright backlighting, Very comfortable feel and finish
Cons: Only controls 5 components, Number pad is a tad small for large hands
Summary: For $60 can't beat it. I would recommend to anyone wanting a remote to replace 5 remotes and have a great experience.

Summary: I bought this remote so I didn't have to keep 5 remotes on my night table. Now that its all programmed and controlling everything I want it to I am extremely happy with it. Once I got the TIVO working (to get it to turn off use the powertoggle function on the setup)
The only thing I am not controlling with this is a DVD burner hooked up to my TIVO to burn shows that I really like and to record some video podcasts.
