Tough to get all equipment...
by dfayad on December 16, 2010
Pros: Great idea...and concept.
Cons: Unfortunately doesn't include all equipment from all manufacturers.
Summary: I like it...if it could program all of my equipment. As newer equipment is developed, the web-based interface just can't keep up.

Also how to figure out how to control the different surround sound things using the remote instead of the Yamaha remote. -

Two strikes and you're out
by wkc1952 on January 11, 2009
Pros: Software interface on PC was nice.
Cons: No cons other than the fact that the two devices I tried were both defective. 0 for 2.

Summary: I tried two (both bought from Sam?s Club) and both were defective. The first was not recognized (USB) by either of my two Dell PCs. I returned it for another. This one was recognized OK. During setup it determined it needed to learn commands from my existing DVR device?s remote. However, it never recognized any of the IR signals (yes, the batteries were good and it controls the DVR just fine). I tried for 15 minutes (or more) following all the suggestions. I even used my existing universal remote (which had learned fine from by DVR remote) and its signals were not recognized either. So, I skipped that step and continued just to see what would happen. During the final part of the setup process (updating the remote with my setup) it seemed to take an exorbitant amount of time for each step. For example, between ?Waking the device?? and ?Waking the device successful? was probably close to ten seconds. It took close to five minutes just to finish the preliminaries (i.e. before it even got to uploading my configuration). Somewhere around 80% complete it failed, claiming a communication problem. Sorry, but two strikes and you?re out. This day has been wasted!

Summary: Harmony remote software is very difficult to use. It forgets what your setup is and you have to start over from scratch often. Even if you enter the model of brand new mainstream devices that they should know about, it doesnt and you have to answer lenghty questions about. There tech support is poor.

I am giving UP

Summary: A friend suggested this device to me after he'd purchased it. He loved his. I started on the setup and immediately noticed how non-intuitive the wizards were. For example, Some screens said "Continue" after they'd been completed; others said "Save".
Finally completed setup and it seemed to be working fine. Just hours later, the troubles started. The only BIG fault is that the startup buttons hardly ever work correctly. When I press "Watch TV" It might turn on the TV and tuner but not the DVR. Then, if I press "Off" it might turn off the two that were active and turn the TV and turner off but turn the DVR ON. Any permutation of the three devices used might go on or off depending on the mood of the remote. When switching between "Watch TV" and "Watch a DVD", it also has trouble switching the HDMI feed, as well. I adjusted timing and power options with no success.
I'm not a geek genius but am pretty adept at following technical instructions. I worked hours on this, and even called in the aforementioned friend to help. Then, I called "Customer Service". Apparently Logitech hires a guy, gives him an instruction manual and a phone and turns him loose. The two I spoke with hadn't mastered English and I was repeatedly put on hold for a "moment" (which would last from 1-3 minutes). Apparently they were frantically trying to find an answer in their references. One guy finally ran out of ideas and told me that my DVR was on "RF" (which it wasn't) and told me I had to contact Dish Network to get the problem resolved and that would fix everything. Just trying to get rid of me and when I insisted he answer how the dish box could interfere with my other components he hung up on me. Nothing was accomplished through their LOUSY cutomer service.
Buttons on remote are poorly arranged; FWD, Reverse, Play, etc are at very bottom making the most often used controls a two handed operation.
All sub-functions, after startup, worked fine. Given my friend's good experience and the many positive reviews this item has received I have to assume that it depends on the components in your system. Sad, since this would be a gem if it just worked as it should.
After about 15 hours of frustration, mine's going back tomorrow morning. -
Nice remote, but had bad luck with this one.

Summary: Bought on sell and also with a rebate last year. Thought it was a great deal for the price. First one completely failed within a few weeks. I was able to get service on the phone to trouble-shoot, and they kindly shipped a new one since the remote would not turn on. Got the new one within a few days. Lasted a little longer, but same issue. It just stopped working.
When it did work:
Easy to configure using Logitech's program. I can't imagine if you had to configure this without a computer. If you can install a program into you computer, configuring this remote shouldn't be a challenge. Had various components, and every item was supported, even a 10+ year old A/V Receiver.
This remote definitely has a lot of features, but I didn't have it long it enough to enjoy it. Call it bad luck or whatever, but the fact I had failures, twice... I would not recommend this remote. -
Best money I've spent lately !!!!

Summary: This is probably one of the best purchases I have made of late. Have 12 remotes (yes 12). This device replaced them all. The set up was very straightforward. Took me about 2 hours 'cause I had to play around but, just getting the system tweaked the way I want it. Best part is if you mess something up the "HELP" button will fix it right from the remote. If you are a retentive like me you can go as deep as you want. If not, (and I suspect most people just want the basics), Set up walks you through the process with ease.
After spending upwards of 200$'s over the years trying to solve the "Remote for each device" issue I am THRILLED with the results I have gotten with the Harmony 659. I would recommend this for every body. Even my, (Can you fix my computer again!), sister could set this device up and use it right away.
Only caveat, The BUTTONS!!! I have thumbs for fingers and these buttons are reeeel small. Layout is ok but some of the buttons are hard to get to. Maybe putting texture on the main buttons so you could feel them would help.
