Summary: Before I purchased this remote, I checked the difference between the 880 and the 890 and found that RF was the primary difference. Since I don't have hidden components, this was the winner for me. I ordered this online and received it in about 2 days. I was up and running with the remote in approximately 15 minutes. It operates all of my components like it's the remote that came with that component. It took a second to figure out how to add buttons, but once I figured it out, it was sheer bliss. The harmony line is a great line of remotes (I have a 659 that my wife inherited) because this baby rocks and it is truly the only remote you will need. At $140 this is a great addition to your home theater system! Yes, the buttons do feel a bit flimsy, but after playing with it for some time, you don't have to worry about that. It's very responsive and works well. That's the only reason I rated it a 9. Nice job Logitech.

That about says it all. I have some electronics that are older in my home, like old cd players...and this puppy will control them! All you have to do is program it up front and WHAM you have a universal remote to rule them all.
LOVE how you can set up combos for devises as well. Example. Say you want to Watch TV and use your PVR you can program it just to do that. Turn on both items at once. Is amazing!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: First off I just want to say that I have now owed this remote for over two years and have come across some problems and solutions. I will give a quick review and list my problems and solutions that I am sure other people have or will encounter.
This is the best remote I have ever owed, and I have owed a few. I have universals that were from One for all, Harman Kardon and Onkyo to name a few. This one hands down beats them all. This literally controls every remote I have (6) with little problems. There was a couple instances were the remote didn’t have the proper functions, but this is easily solved with the learning feature. So for those of you who say the remote doesn’t do a certain thing your original remote does. Simply take your original remote and have the harmony learn the function you need and add it to the lcd buttons. Devices I have: Sony video scope tv, JVC vcr, Nakamichi cd, Harman Kardon dvd, Harman Kardon receiver and a Yamaha tuner. All and every function is controlled by my harmony.
The website interface can be confusing at first, but with time it gets easier to navigate. If you got this remote or purchased it around Christmas time be prepared for long wait times as the site will be flooded with other people who just got the remote and are trying to set it up also. There are a lot of little things that can be tweated on the remote from the site such as delay settings that can be very slow for most devices. Just play around a little and learn everything, it can only help in the future. Besides that’s half the fun right?
I think the overall design and look of the remote is great. It fits comfortably in the hand, is smooth to the touch and I think is the best looking remote out there. Sure not all the buttons are easy to reach with one hand, but which remote is? All in all I find the remote easy use and the activities function is the best. There are times when you will press an activity and something will not get turned on for whatever reason. It could be the signal was blocked for that particular device, or it was not turned off or on by the remote. If this happens all that has to be done is press the help button and answer the questions. It will eventually turn on what you want and sync the remote with the device again.
There are some neat features that don’t offer a lot of functionality. One is the ability to add some pictures for a slideshow. This does have function as it acts as a screen saver when the remote is docked. There is the ability to change the background color if wanted. Also there is a button (can’t remember name, don’t have remote with me) which brings up on the lcd screen a list of your favorite channels and an icon can be place beside the button. So if you have cbs as a favorite station you can get the cbs logo from the web and put it beside the button.
One of the best features in my opinion is the docking station. Nothing beats never having to change batteries and worry about losing the settings. It also serves a good purpose as a home base so it doesn’t get miss placed. I love the blue halo on it and it makes it easy to find in the dark. I did have a problem with it in the beginning though.
Problem # 1 - Remote wasn’t charging in the dock.
This is a common problem with the harmony remote. There is an earlier version of the dock in which the little metal contacts were not connecting with the remote when placed in it. A kind of quick call to Harmony and they were shipping the new style dock to me and all I had to do was put my old one in the package and return to sender. I received it with in 5 days. The new dock has smaller contacts and they are raised to make a better connection with the remote.
Problem # 2 - Remote keeps resetting and won’t work.
This freaked me out at first because of the price I paid and the fact it was off warranty. I did some searching and read a forum in which someone placed a piece of paper in the battery compartment. I opened the back and could see that the battery was not making a good connection with the prongs. It probably has to do with the position of the prongs, there are facing north on the remote and of course over time the weight of the battery and gravity slowing increased the spacing between the batter and the prongs. So I took a little piece of cardboard as it is stronger than paper and placed it under the battery to force it (but delicately) into the prongs for a secure connection. And voila no more problems.
So given that there were problems but also solutions, I would say this is the best investment one could make in the world of electronics and the jungle of remotes. With the prices you can get these at now I wouldn’t hesitate to get one if you are in the market for a new remote. One grip is they should offer more themes (only one right now is world cup) for the remote or at least allow consumers to make some and post them on the site.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

I set the remote down on it and I have to jiggle it to just the right position before it will charge. If Someone bumpe the table even slightly, it loses contact with the base.

Pros: Unbelievable resource list of products. does everything every device i have does and sometimes easier. the icon LCD screen is so great for us over 50 boomers in the dark.

Summary: Yes, I ended up calling customer service the first three times were my own bonehead fault for not following the instruction on the webpages. The trouble is you think a remote should be easy, that's why you're buying it right. Well gettin it that way take patience. Most people like me who want a one-thingie-does-it-all don't have that patience, at least at first. Get the patience, get the remote, follow the instructions, call customer service they'll fix whatever it is that might not work after they fix you first. It's a great remote!

Summary: From start to finish it took me less than 20 minutes to get my entertainment system programmed into this exceptional remote. The on-line interface allowed me to combine my A/V receiver, HD T/V, DirectTV HD decoder, CD player, and XBox360 with no headaches what so ever. After answering a few simple questions about each component I was in business. The remote even has a smart feature that can tell if one of the componenets is not configured quite right. So even when I messed up and told it the wrong input for my TV on one of the activity functions, it asked me a question and fixed it for me, without having to go back to the computer. Not only that, but it only took me a few minutes to explain it to my with and children. I love this thing.

Work Through the Set-up And It's Worth It

Summary: Being fearful of the negative reviews, I purchased this remote from a local retailer with the thought in mind that if this remote stinks, I can return it and not worry about the woes of shipping.
Let's start with everyone's biggest problem...the set-up. At first, the set-up is intimidating and a bear to get though. I answered every little question the site asked and when I was finished with my initial set-up some stuff was wrong and some was right. This is mainly because I own an old home theater receiver that pre-dates s-video. This was a good thing. Once I had my initial set-up and got through the wizard, I could test and adjust as I saw fit. My one suggestion to avoid frustration is to take the time to search and browse the site. Often I would make highly detailed changes to see how in-depth the site would go, but then back out my changes at the last moment. My set-up is now 100% accurate having to set the remote up to go 6 or 7 commands deep to command some of my components.
The site may sometimes crash, which crashes the remote. However it's completely recoverable when you enter the site again. Just remove and re-insert the battery to reset the remote.
This remote is a learning remote. The bulk of my reciever's commands were not in the logitech database. Simply put the remotes side-by-side, input your commands, and the 880 learns the commands. For complex or multi-step commands, there is a RAW button on the website that "records" each command exactly as you input it.
I have not had any charging problems like I have read on cnet and other sites. I saw on a webpage that for the first 5 charging cycles, you should let the battery drain completely then recharge it completely. I have done this, and can get over a week's worth of frequent use on one charge.
Keep in mind. This remote is not for the impatient. Expect to spend more than a few hours setting up your remote if you have more than two components. However fighting the frustration was definitely worth it for me. Once you get through the hardship this remote makes component life simple and easy.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I originally hooked my system up and let some one else program the remote with out thinking twice about it; however, after using the factory remotes noticed that the Harmony 880 left a little to be desired. I sat down armed with my Mac laptop (Plus), a sheet with all my model numbers (HIGHLY RECOMMEND: first step), and the original remotes. Having a pronto in the past provided fimilarity with how to use MACROS, which this remote programs automatically (PLUS).
One thing to be careful of is that if you are like me and want to tweak a couple things then you have to program the "Activities" individually. The remote is going to remember what was happening before you pressed the activity button and not know if you made some changes with out using the "Activities" functions (If need be you can run through the HELP function on the remote to correct problem: Cubersome [Con]).
When intially programming this remote check all the functions to ensure proper usage, it is going to take a couple of updates from your programs to get everything running flawlessly.
Have patience it is worth what time you invest into the Remote.
I did not want to call the customer support team; however, ended up calling to ask about the way to access my favorite channels; they were helpful.
All and all worthwhile remote.Updated
I recently updated my DirecTV box to the new HD DVR and changing the programming for this new box was seemless.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Finally a Remote that will do it all but clean your windows

Summary: This remote is what the Dr. ordered, to program it you just answer a series of questions on your current setup, including the soecific brand/model numbers of your equipment. After entering all your data, the interface goes out to the harmony website and pulls the appropriate macros/commands for each device.
Another minor, but neat feature, is that th remote turns on (lights up) once you pick it up, and goes back to non-glow after a predetermined amount of time (which you can set)I am extremely satisfied with how it perfoms and its flexibility.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice in concept but bad hardware and software.

Neither remote ...Summary: I wish I could rate this remote as highly as everyone else. In theory it's great but I've had nothing but problems with two of them.
Neither remote has successfully turned my components on and off as it should. When I want to use the DVR and TV, it turns on the TV but not the DVR. When I want to turn them off, it turns off the DVR, then the TV, and then turns the DVR back on. None of my several attempts to address its timing have worked.
Both units frequently reset themselves. There's nothing more annoying than reaching for the remote, just to lower the volume, and having to wait for it to reset. It's like using Microsoft Windows.
Neither of the units recharge themselves reliably. They constantly beep, indicating that their not making a connection to the cradle. I have tried tilting the cradle, turning it upside down, and putting things on top of the remote (in order to ensure contact). Nothing works.
The website, that's used for programming the remote, is getting better but I have had experiences of walking through a complete setup and then getting an error message that the remote isn't compatible.
The first unit developed a wide, white streak on its LCD after a couple of days. Little did I know that it was a warning of what was to come.
I really wish it worked reliably because it would be the best solution out there. But, I'm apparently not as fortunate as other users out there.
I have always liked Logitech's hardware but have found their software to be lacking. I decided to give them another shot over the past few years. I found that their software is no better and their hardware is worse.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
