Summary: Had I known how non-user friendly this device is to set up I'd have saved my $'s It will (when you get it aligned) act as a means of tripping the shutter when an object or creature interrupts the beam between the sender and the reciever. The reciever has a jack for external power. My D2X will power the unit just fine. What it should have had is: 1. A connector on the trasmitter which runs on a 3 volt coin cell. external power would avoid having the cell run down over a long period of use. and 2. It should have a means of showing when you've established a path for the beam from the sender (transmitter) and the reciever. It wouldn't have been a big deal to set it up so that the LED in the reciever would light when a bean was seen. and 3. The bracket that I had to order after the fact to mount the reciever with the camera when a flash is occupying the hot-shoe. (That's one place where the reciever can be mounted) should have been included in a device that costs over $100+. The bracket didn't cost a lot it was just a pain to have to order it later and pay S/H on a $15 piece of metal.
4. The instructions were greatly lacking in clarity or examples.
The problem is the receiver has to be pointed directly at the transmitter. There is a very limited angle of acceptance (like a 10 degree cone).
If the hot shoe is occupied by a flash or flash cable, then the IR receiver floats freely and is difficult to get pointed in the direction of the transmitter.
A better solution is to go with radio controlled wireless rather than IR wireless.
This will occasionally set off an SB-800 set in SU-4 mode -- undesired side effect.
