Summary: Easy setup as long and you update the firmware and them connect it with the included cat5 cable before you move it out to where you'll be repeating the signal. Works well for me to transmit from one structure on the property to another (with lots of brick to block the signal on the exterior of the house that's transmitting the original signal). I just wish these things weren't so fragile when it comes to power. I'm on my 3rd one in two years. One flicker of the power and you're out $100 bucks. Put it on VERY good surge protector or this will become a regular budget item like bread and milk.

Summary: Mine worked perfectly for 6 months. The set-up wasn't as hard as some reviews might show, but it aint easy either. But after 6 months, it just died on me. No power, no response, just dead. No explanation. I got a replacement product after a tedious customer support procedure. The product really works well. But if you don't want to replace your product every 6 months, try something else. And I've done some research over the net, and apparently, this is not an isolated case. There have been several reoprts of this happening. Some have gone through 3 replacement products already.

Get Version 3 if you MUST have this Poor Equipment

Pros: great concept, nice looking design
Cons: doesn't work, impossible to configure, atrocious tech support

Summary: Ah, those wonderful tech 'support' "readers-of-cheat-sheets-on-their-computer-and-devoid -of-any-technical-knowledge-impossible-to-understand" folks in Bangalore or wherever! Their attitude is so abrasive, and accents impenetrable. No social skills and, to make this all really fun, the product simply doesn't work with the wizard or without. Five hours of frustration on two separate tech calls and we were unable to get this item to work with a Linksys WRT54G router.
This is such lousy technology and so poorly supported that there ought to be a criminal penalty. -
Rubbish! Don't get this crap.
by azure.sky on February 10, 2007
Pros: Tell me if you can find any.
Cons: A hassle to set up. The "Auto Configuration" connects to all your neighbours' networks but not yours.
Summary: A waste of time to set up.

Speed issues-signal however is great!
by NetMaster on December 4, 2006
Pros: Great Signal
Cons: very very slow

Summary: I purchased the extender a week ago... Setup was extremely easy ! Auto-setup worked out of the box... (just had to ensure all security features were turned off on the router).
was up and running in no time...
the beauty is that my laptop picks up the strongest access point between the router and the extender. However, when "connected" through the extender, i notice a HUGE drop in speed.
i.e. : I would typically be at 50% in my kitchen pre-extender and still manage to download at a decent speed of 300 to 400K a sec.
from the minute i switch to the extender (same spot) I get an amzing 100% signal but speed drops to an average 90k to 100k a sec.
few facts:
I have a fairly new Speedbooster G Linksys router.
both firmware are latest.
no encryption is used
Anyone with similar problems ?
Any assistance or tips would be greatly appreciated
Thank you in advance.

I needed to use the included CD to configure it for network security.
I don't know how it works with other brands since I use it with a Linksys Wireless Router. -
Great, if you can get it configured... not for the average retail user!

Summary: I had to configure this thing in front of a client and it was NOT a good experience!! I had to eat 6 hours of consulting time but I never give up.
This product is not for the average home user to mess with. I've been working on network stuff for 20 years and it was a nightmare. I had to get Linksys tech support on the line. The level 1 person was useless and passed my call to level 3.
They spoke english (WOW IMAGINE!!) and he knew what he was doing at least.
Manual is horrible, the setup disk is program is horrible. Throw them back in the box.
What they don't tell you:
Configure your PC to a static IP address and make sure your router has no WPA or WEP security or hiden SSID and is on the 192.168.1.0 network.
Basically:
1. Reset Router to factory defaults. No WEP or WPA or hiden SSID and make sure it's on the 192.168.1.1 network.
2. Upgrade firmware to latest.
3. Hardwire PC to router with cable DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT doing this with Wireless connection.
4. Assign a STATIC IP address to PC
5. In a Browser, open your router admin page (http://192.168.1.1)
6. Hit the autoconfigure button on your WRE54G. Make sure it's NEXT TO your router so it picks up YOUR router and not another in the area.
6. Open a second browser session and go to http://192.168.1.240 (the address of the WRE54G.
7. Download the latest firmware for the WRE54G (they are all the same apparently, Ver 1, 2, 3)
8. GO to Help on the WRE54G browser screen and upgrade the firmware (it can be hard to find)
9.Once upgraded, make changes to the WRE54G one at a time and then to the router.... add WPA (Hopefully your using this and not WEP.The latest WRE54G firmware has support for the WPA)
*Always do WRE54G first. It will go off line (red link lite),
10. Make the same change to the router. Then the WRE54G will come back online (blue light)
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Cisco
- Part number: WRE54G
- Description: Expand the range of your wireless network! The Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander is the easy way to increase the effective coverage of your wireless network. Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the Wireless-G Range Expander does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router, and it "bounces" the signals out to remote wireless devices. This "relay station" or "repeater" approach saves wiring costs and helps to build wireless infrastructure by driving signals into even those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas where wireless coverage is spotty and cabling is impractical. The Range Expander is perfect to help cover large areas in multi-story homes, warehouse environments, public spaces, wireless "Hot Spots", and outdoor venues - anywhere you need extra coverage for your wireless network. The Wireless-G Range Expander is compatible with the Linksys WAP54G Access Point, and both the WRT54G and WRT54GS Wireless Routers. It works with both Wireless-G and Wireless-B clients so you'll get the benefits of increased coverage, even with a mixed network. So, expand your wireless network's effective coverage the easy way, with the Wireless-G Range Expander.
