Asus RT-N56U Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless-N Router price range: $92.99 - $135.95

The good: The stylish and compact Asus RT-N56U Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless-N Router offers stellar 5Ghz performance, long range, and an intuitive Web interface. Its storage feature is well designed; the router is comparatively fast; and it offers a convenient way to access data over the Internet.
The bad: The Asus RT-N56U's Web interface takes a long time to apply changes and the router doesn't support the new three-stream 450Mbps wireless speed.
The bottom line: The Asus RT-N56U is arguably one of the best true dual-band 300Mbps home routers on the market.

Bad Product and Worst Customer Service

This is 1st Asus Product I bought and probably the last.
Here are my reasons why:
I was looking for the N router from which I expected much fast response and based on several +ve reviews on this ASUS RT-N56U I decided to buy this product. this 1st unit that came just did not power on, so I had to return it to get an replacement. the 2nd unit did turn on but the speed is NOT as good as my old 6 years old Linksys WRT54G router, hell its SLOWER THAN THAT. My laptop is new laptop with Intel i7 quad band processor and 8MB RAM and built-in Intel Centrino 1030n wireless card.
I have set up the dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) with 2 different SSID for easy identification. but guess what I cannot even see the 5 GHz in my available Network Connection.
I have a Comcast DSL which can support up to 25 MBPS download and 4 MBPS upload which I confirmed with my Comcast technical support. Comcast 1st checked for any issues at their end, did a reset and everything else and confirmed that everything was ok at their end. next we ( me and the Comcast technical support) did a wired as well as a wireless connection SPEED TEST to check for the slow connection I was having using (www.speedtest.com) with my wired connection to my laptop I had steady download speed of 23 MBPs and Upload of 4.5 MBPs ( more than their specified capacity) but with my WIRELESS Connection my download would range from 10.8 MBps at times to 15 Mbps and upload from 2 to 4 MBps and ping has ranged from 15 to 75. my laptop is no more than 30 feet away from my router with just 1 bedroom wall in between. my Laptop, blackberry and my wife's I phone is the only thing connected while doing this test, so not that the network is overloaded,( same devices that were on my Linksys 24 GHz WRT54G router) I tried it for Half a day and also tried changing position of the router but all in vain.
well then I tried contacting Asus customer service at the specified # 1-812-282-2787 Monday - Friday, 5:30am - 9:00pm PST; Saturday - Sunday, 6:00am - 3:00pm PST but GUESS WHAT, they have a same recorded message promoting their product and NOBODY ANSWERS THE PHONE. I was holding the line for 45 mins hoping someone would answer in case I'm in line for response, but NO, they don't care a dam for their customers. well ASUS guess what if you don't care for your customers, so do we don't care for you. Well FYI I even sent them an escalated email but no response. I'll wait for a day or 2 if ASUS can provide a solution, if not Out goes ASUS back to where it came from and in comes my tried and tested LINKSYS brand New Member E4200.2 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lots of potential.
by tae_dan on August 6, 2011
Pros: The fastest WAN-LAN speed according to smallnetbuilder. Decent wireless signals and throughput. Two USB ports for HDD, flashdrive or printer. Lots of features. iTunes server.
Cons: No guest network. No IPv6. Fails GRC port test on Port 21 (closed but not stealth). Extreme stuttering when streaming movies from USB attached HDD directly to a PS3 wirelessly (on all channels) through Media Server.
Summary: If you can live without some features, it's a great router!

NO VPN, NO SUPPORT!
by AmirPeivandi on July 26, 2011
Pros: Speed is good, works fine when it works!
Cons: There are tons of issues around VPN and worst than all it's not consistance! It works and then it stops working and then it works! If you check over internet there are tens of complains and then when you call support it's as useless as calling your grandm
Summary: I'm returning it and I'm disappointed why cnet didn't mention the obvious issues. I trusted cnet and bought this but I guess I should be more careful ...

Summary: Bought this router on the strength of good reviews in computer magazines (hmmm). Two of my three laptops connected as well as my blu ray player. But then I couldn't connect my third laptop even after a firmware upgrade. Asus "tech support" of no help. (He actually stated that since my windows connection icon in the task tray showed that I was connected to the internet, there was nothing wrong with their router despite the fact that I could not access any website with either IE or Firefox and could not download any Outlook messages). Then I couldn't connect either of my cell phones wi fi though I had no problem whatsoever with the router I replaced when I changed my dsl isp to a cable isp. Wasted an hour troubleshooting with my Mobile carrier before they clearly established that there was nothing wrong with the WiFi feature on either my Nokia or Samsung mobile) Then I spent almost an hour with level one tech support at ASUS with no resolution. When he couldn't fix the problem I waited 44 minutes for a level two, but was timed out. The next day I called again. This time - 36 minutes waiting for a level two and again was timed out. Finally I called on a Saturday and spent 16 fruitless minutes waiting.
Buy a router with good tech support. Nothing is more frustrating than dealing with bored "support" reps who only have one button on their phone - HOLD!
ASUS has the absolute worst tech support I have experienced in 20 years of dealing with product support. The router is an expensive piece of junk.

Good replacement for my unreliable D-ling DIR 615
by gastrohep1 on June 9, 2011
Pros: Seems faster and and definitely more reliable than my D-link DIR 615
Cons: Router's 5 gHz channel is wireless n only while the 2.4 gHz is b/g/n. My ipod touch only uses 2.4 gHz wireless g/n and all my old devices use only wireless g so they all have to use the 2.4 gHz channel. Don't have a device yet to use the 5 gHz channel and
