Cisco 870 Series of integrated services routers are fixed-configuration routers that support multiple types of DSL technologies, broadband cable, and Metro Ethernet connections in small offices. They provide the performance needed to run concurrent services, including firewall, intrusion prevention, and encryption for VPNs; optional 802.11b/g for WLAN networking; and quality of service (QoS) features for optimizing voice and ... Summary: I purchased one of these to replace a Linksys RVS4000 that I was very dissatisfied with. I now have this system running for about a week and don't know why I didn't do this sooner.
One of the things I noticed right off the bat is that my VOIP service improved dramatically. I have 2 VOIP PAPI2 boxes (4 lines total) connected in my network. With 2 different Linksys routers I thought my service was OK. Maybe once every other day I would get a dropped call or packets. I considered my VOIP service to be 85% of a land line at half the cost (which to me was a good deal). With the Cisco 871 I'll have to say that my VOIP is now 99% of a landline. No dropped calls and haven't had a single instance where lost/dropped packets resulted in fuzziness. Major improvement.
Overall network performance seems to have also improved although I have not made any quantitative measurements.
For anyone unfamiliar with configuring Cisco products setting this up can be a daunting task. The unit I received shipped with IOS V12.4(4)T8 installed. I've never dealt with Cisco products before so I bought a few books to supplement the Cisco documentation available on their web site. One book I'd highly recommend is 'Cisco IOS Cookbook 2nd Edition'. Another book that is also OK is 'Cisco IOS in a nutshell 2nd Edition'. Total time to get the unit installed and configured ran me about 20-25 hours. Not all of this was actual configuation/testing, a lot was simply reading reference material to understand the various options. For a first time install I don't think this is too bad. I could install another 871 router in an hour or two with what I've learned so far.
The unit ships with a CD containing 'Security Device Manager (SDM)' software. This is similar to the web based interface on a Linksys router. SDM can provide you with a basic setup configuration. However SDM does not support all the options available within the IOS so you'll have to take the basic configuration and manually edit it to end up with what you need. Options are something this unit is not short of and for a first timer it takes a while to get a handle on what's going on.
For certain features you'll have to have a service contract with Cisco. For example if you want updated SDM software you have to have a service account. Also if you want updated image files for the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) you'll also need a service contract. It would be nice if registered users could get these maintenance items for free - maybe I just don't know where to look.
The unit is compact although it's much larger than consumer devices like the Linksys RVS4000. Just be aware of this if space is at a premium.
Although 4.5X+ the price of many consumer devices I believe this unit is a good value and would recommend it to others.

They provide the performance needed to run concurrent services, including firewall, intrusion prevention, and encryption for VPNs; optional 802.11b/g for WLAN networking; and quality of service (QoS) features for optimizing voice and video applications. In addition, the Cisco Router and Security Device Manager (SDM) Web-based configuration tool simplifies setup and deployment, and centralized management capabilities give network managers visibility and control of the network configurations at the remote site.
