Cisco Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router price range: $114.99 - $159.99

The good: The Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router offers true dual-band with 450Mbps on the 5GHz band; Gigabit Ethernet; fast throughput; a long range; NAS functionality; a nice set of networking features; and a good Web interface. The router also comes in a nice and compact design, and includes Cisco Connect, an intuitive software application that helps home users set up and manage their home wireless network with ease.
The bad: The Linksys E4200 doesn't offer 450Mbps throughput on the 2.4GHz band; its guest networking feature is limited to only 10 clients; the included desktop application doesn't allow for managing all of the router's settings, doesn't work well with the Web interface, and requires a live Internet connection for the initial setup. The router also runs warm, and its power adapter is bulky.
The bottom line: The Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router is the first advanced router from Cisco that will make both novice and savvy users happy, thanks to its easy-to-use desktop application, comprehensive Web interface, great design, and stellar performance.

Best Wireless Router I Have Owned
by mgf_db5 on February 2, 2011
Pros: It has good range, is easy to set up and performs very well.
Cons: The Cisco Connect desktop application was too basic for my needs. However the web-based interface is great.

Summary: I was very leery to try the E4200 with its hidden antennas after the miserable failure of my first such experience several years ago with the Linksys WRT110 - the latter had no range whatsoever. Frankly, I was not expecting considerable improvement. However, I was wrong. The E4200 really performs well even at a distance of some 75 feet. Its range is much better than the Linksys WRT150N it replaced. Nonetheless, to be safe, I later added a Hawking HWREN1 Range Extender although it really wasn't necessary. I really like the dual-band feature - the web interface was required for its setup. I don't need to take advantage of guest networking so this feature was turned off. It performs very well. Somewhat pricey, but worthwhile.

Drops connection ALL the time! BAD customer service!!!
by Brierh on December 8, 2011
Pros: NONE AT THIS TIME
Cons: We had a less powerful version of the Linksys router and were experiencing connection drops frequently, so upgraded to this one. We are still experiencing the same problems.

Summary: Shaw instructed us that we need to change the wireless channel, and to call Cisco for support. Cisco said they would love to help with this, I ONLY need to buy an extended support plan (it's been 4 months since we bought it), they only provide free support for 90 days. What a joke for a product that is still under warranty and is not functioning well at all.

I am an IT sysadmin and over the last year and a bit have done a lot to do with Wireless N and getting performance out of our current gear at work. For a home product this is a fantastic unit, particularly for throughput.
I had an old Linksys WAP54G at my parents house which we have had for at least 7-8 years and it has been the most robust AP I have ever seen. Given it was only wireless G it had it's limitations, but was rock solid.
I have used jPerf on a brand new iMac which has a 450Mbit card in it and from about 15m away from the AP (down the hall with at least 3 brick walls in direct line) getting 3-4 bars out of 5 and have been able to get 122Mbits (sustained for 60 seconds) download and 118Mbits (sustained for 60 seconds) upload. If it stood infront of the iMac during the transfer it would drop to 72 Mbits during uploads.
For those that complain that they are having poor performance with their e4200s I will give you 2 suggestions:
* Get a GOOD wireless N adaptor minimum 2x2 (300Mbits) or 3x3 (450Mbits). I would suggest something with Atheros Chip or Broadcom. Avoid intel wifi adaptors as much as possible. Disable all power saving settings once installed.
* location, location, location. Unlike the typical Wireless G accesspoints that blast out in all directions from 1 radio, the Wireless N have muliple radios and performance increases are noticed with the multipaths used with these radios, reflective walls are good for wireless N, unlike G. Moving an AP 1 meter from where you have the AP could make the difference with getting signal in one room or not (i have seen first hand this happening with Corporate grade Access points that cost over $1000 each) and it comes down to AP location a lot.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Easy set up, great tech support, strong wireless signal
by tsui730 on October 22, 2011
Pros: Performance is beyond reach by other leading brand routers, strong and stable wireless signals, slim & high tech look.
Cons: Will be nice to have LED lights at front.

Summary: Since October 15, I've tried D-LINK DIR-655, NETGEAR N750 and this LINKSYS E4200, based on my own experience, E4200 is much better than the other two routers. Although DIR-655 gave my 3 floors downstairs laptop strong wireless signal, it reduced my internet download speed to half. After calling D-LINK tech support 2 days in a row and having changed router settings, problem still not solved and I had to return it.
I've read pretty good reviews about E4200 and when shopping for it at my local STAPLES, NETGEAR N750 also caught my eyes with its front-located LED lights. So I bought both the LINKSYS E4200 and NETGEAR N750 to test them.
Initial Set Up: Winner goes to E4200 (user friendly no hassle CD set up)
Steady Wired Internet Download Speed: both E4200 & N750 are excellent
Strong Wireless Signals: Again, E4200 has the edge
With E4200, my laptop located 3 floors downstairs always has 4-bar signal and stable internet speed, even on my backyard deck, E4200 has better receptions than N750. N750 will drop signals from 4-bar to 2-bar quite often, especially at nights. The only advantage that N750 has over E4200 is its front located LED lights.
My previous LINKSYS WRT54G worked perfectly for over 3.5 years, after my recent personal tests on routers, I will stick with LINKSYS in the future.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Well it does work...
by Buzzwang on September 14, 2011
Pros: Easy connections, decent wireless range, simple design, same-as-always Cisco setup options we're all familiar with
Cons: Wireless-N speed is horrid for most adapters/computers
Summary: It works, it's stable and reliable. It's a Cisco product so generally I would expect that.
The problem is that, of 9 different wireless-n adapters I've tried (...Summary: It works, it's stable and reliable. It's a Cisco product so generally I would expect that.
Well, seems that the Dell 1505 WLAN Draft N adapter did the trick. 243Mbps at about 60ft through a couple walls and a china cabinet.
The problem is that, of 9 different wireless-n adapters I've tried (some single, some dual-band), on a Dell 1505 adapter ever connects at "true" N speed, that being 150mbps which is the max for the 1505 card.
I've run an Intel AGN4965 card, another Dell card (which is just a rebranded Intel I think) three different models of the Alfa high power USB adapters (single and dual-band), a D-Link dual-band USB, a Cnet (no relation I think) mini-n USB adapter (single band) and an Airlink dual-band USB adapter. All of these others connect at 56 or 72mbps ALWAYS. Only the Dell 1505 has ever achieved a real N speed of 150. Even my XBOX360 seems to be having speed issues with the E4200, and they were only 15 feet apart with no obstructions between them when I was doing my testing (opposite ends of the same room; no furniture between them, no walls or anything like that).
It's really rather disappointing that what should be considered a top of line Cisco access point/router would preform so poorly. By comparison, I've had most of these adapters on the same computer connected to other wireless-N access points and gotten full or nearly full speeds, so I know it's not some setting on the computer or for the adapters that is causing the slow down. I even switched the wireless to N-only on both 5 and 2.4 bands and still didn't get better speeds out of it.
I debated returning the E4200 and getting a Netgear or D-Link product instead, but decided that I should keep it as Cisco will most likely release a firmware update to correct the issue once enough people start complaining about the poor performance. Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later. Should it end up not happening, I've heard that the D-Link DAP-1522 wireless access point/bridge has worked well for many people, and they are getting high-speed wireless connections out of it using many of the same wireless adapters that I've already tried using on the E4200. I've been thinking about getting a DAP-1522 anyway to use as bridge in my new house (It's not going to be a simple thing to run ethernet cable in it after we final get the house).
Updated on Sep 15, 2011
So it's not my computer (i.e. windows or the software or whatever), and apparently the adapter of choice makes a difference. So 10 adapters later I finally found one that works, but that's a bit of a ridiculous effort to get a decent speed.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

This router is Excellent
by vw8750413 on August 16, 2011
Pros: Gigabyte ethernet. Simultaneous dual band.
Cons: None really, cept it doesn't have USB 3.0. Which isn't really a con because through my research I couldn't even find a router that use USB 3.0 that's gigabyte and dual band.
Summary: A lot of people review this router as having bad signal strength. This isn't the case with mine. With the router running through 2 floors, and several walls. My ...
Summary: A lot of people review this router as having bad signal strength. This isn't the case with mine. With the router running through 2 floors, and several walls. My PS3 and Laptop had full signal strength.. Also seen a lot of reviews saying transfer speeds aren't up to par. So many people don't understand that it's not the router that's the problem. Your devices network adapter is what's limiting you. My dads smart phone can only cap out at 20 mbps, my laptop 40 mbps, my desktop 100 mbps; in an internet speed test. There are several wireless devices in the house, and none of them have a 5ghz wireless adapter in them. Which is this routers strong point.. This router is future proof, not many devices have a 5ghz adapter, Sony and Xbox just dropped "refreshed" systems, only using 2.4ghz channel... :( The router provides IPv6 support, and gigabyte ethernet. All 3 of which are new technologies years from being surpassed. If your router only gets 1 bar of signal strength 1 foot away, using a wireless adapter you got 10 years ago, don't knock the E4200. Upgrade your equipment!! Don't pay attention to people posting bad reviews about signal strength and speeds. If they received a defective unit, they should return it and get another one because this router is fresh.

Defective Media Server

Summary: The Linksys e4200 is supposed to be a high-end router, with media server capabilities. It is NOT. The media server feature does not work and has not worked correctly since product release. Linksys keeps promising a fix, but customers are still waiting. Support forum members have been pressing the company for a solution, but Linksys merely deletes critical post from the forums. This is apparently their idea of how to "fix" the problem.
There are certain features that make a router a high-end purchase. If usb storage with media server capability is one of the features you are looking for, you should avoid this product.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
