Cisco Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router price range: $134.97 - $159.99

The good: The Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router offers true dual-band with 450Mbps on the 5GHz band; Gigabit Ethernet; fast throughput; a long range; NAS functionality; a nice set of networking features; and a good Web interface. The router also comes in a nice and compact design, and includes Cisco Connect, an intuitive software application that helps home users set up and manage their home wireless network with ease.
The bad: The Linksys E4200 doesn't offer 450Mbps throughput on the 2.4GHz band; its guest networking feature is limited to only 10 clients; the included desktop application doesn't allow for managing all of the router's settings, doesn't work well with the Web interface, and requires a live Internet connection for the initial setup. The router also runs warm, and its power adapter is bulky.
The bottom line: The Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router is the first advanced router from Cisco that will make both novice and savvy users happy, thanks to its easy-to-use desktop application, comprehensive Web interface, great design, and stellar performance.

Excellent for the most part.
by mathatas on June 7, 2011
Pros: Gave me a stronger more consistent signal than any of the other routers I tried (Belkin and Visio). My internet tv is behind a brick wall and this is the only one that consistently penetrated the wall with a strong signal for streaming hi def tv via Netfl
Cons: The initialization of devices seems to take longer for some reason. Once they connect, there is no problem. But it seems to me that when you've already set up your notebook to work with it, that when you turn on your notebook or whatever, they should conn

Disappointed - better choices out there

Pros: Easy setup. Fast if within 20 ft.
Cons: Very limited range. Slows way down if you aren't within about 20 ft.

Summary: 2 bedroom one level townhouse and it can't even offer full coverage. Devices even loose signal on the balcony. Wood, drywall and siding. My old link sys 54gs had 4x the range and was for all practical purposes just as fast. If you are in the same room this thing is very fast, but for these scenarios I can just as easily use one of the gigabit ports.

Summary: Best router on the market. I used NETGEAR 3700 and sold it since it had so many signal drops and range was lousy esp with 5GHZ. Also had ASUS RTN16 but it did not have dual band.
I get 450Mbps on my latest Lenovo. Ignore the naysayers you need the latest wireless adapters to get full speed. Cant wait for DDWRT...

Perfect router to get ready for upcoming technology
by Big_Bad_Wolf1037 on April 18, 2011
Pros: Fast and reliable. Upgraded from a Netgear which dropped the signal 4-5 times a day. This has never dropped, easy to set name and password.
Cons: Kind of expensive. Only one USB port and can only handle storage. It would be nice to use it for a printer, but with Windows 7, just use Homegroup.
Summary: It looks great, it runs only warm with five people drawing from it, and it is ready for the future. Put it up on two pencils and it won't ...
Summary: It looks great, it runs only warm with five people drawing from it, and it is ready for the future. Put it up on two pencils and it won't ever get hot. Setting up network storage is a little tricky, but very worth it if you have limited disk drive space on your PC. Most PC's can't handle the transfer rates...YET. If you buy this you will be ready for future upgrades in wireless technology.

Seemed OK, internet speeds to iPhones was very slow.
by GreenRhyno on April 15, 2011
Pros: Nice design. Pretty.
Easy setup.
5.0 Ghz band worked great, same speed as the wired connection for our Comcast internet (about 12 Mbps)
Was easy to return it to Best Buy when it didn't measure up...Cons: Set up was easy.
Could not get the speed from our comcast connection on our iphones or the 2.4 ghz band in general. The 2.4 ghz band seems to start off strong but then slowly tails offSummary: Our speed on comcast is about 12 Mbps, but was only getting a max of 4 Mbps to phones. Summary: Our speed on comcast is about 12 Mbps, but was only getting a max of 4 Mbps to phones. Usually the speed to phones was much lower at less than 1 Gbps. We were getting between 1-2 Mbps from our old Qwest DSL line and gt704wg router which was about the same as the speed on that Qwest line. The 2.4 ghz band was also suspect on the computer as it would sometimes drop well below 1 Mbps.
Ooops, made some typos:
I spent a few hours reading forums, and adjusting settings to try and get the router to work more consistently on the 2.4 band, but nothing I tried seemed to work, including updating firmware, manually selecting channels, changing encryption etc.
Had a Netgear wndr3700v2 unopened (because I learned of the e4200 after already buying the netgear, and hadn't gotten around to taking the netgear back.) I figured it was worth a shot so I hooked that up and both bands work fine and translate the internet speeds to computers and iPhones. iPhones are consistantly getting 10-14 Mbps down and over 3 Mbps up from our 12/3 connection.
Getting the wndr4000 in the mail in a few days since it is close to the same price as the 3700 and the 3700 is still in the return window. We'll see which performs better and keeps that. Was looking at the asus RT-N56U but have read some reviews that its port forwarding doesn't work and we need that for our Synology NAS functionality (streaming music to iPhone, remote access etc.)
I hope this helps others, and if someone solves the 2.4 ghz band/iphone issue, it would be great to know a solution, as this really is a great router except for that issue.

CONNECTION ISSUES, SUB-PAR SUPPORT. Avoid.
by IFLYMAUI on March 4, 2011
Pros: Design, ease of set-up.
Cons: I 'UPGRADED' from the LINKSYS E2000 to the newer E4200.
Everything went well but for the last month, the E4200 shuts-down daily. Sometimes just once or twice and sometimes as often as 3-4 times a day. It is always consistant. DISCONNECT.Summary: There are better. My older E2000 was a very good product. The E4200 for myself has not been so.

Very Disappointing Wireless Range...
by miked428 on February 12, 2011
Pros: Great throughput on wired ports and in very close wireless proximity, but you're stricken to no more than about 25 feet to maintain that throughput.
Cons: Connected to wireless at 50 feet...line of sight, no walls/doors/glass, a connection to the 5ghz radio is completely worthless and the 2.4ghz radio at the same distance begins dropping packets...severely.
Summary: Bottom line for me is that I'm going to have to return this device, as it doesn't suit my wireless needs, and does not come close. My old ...
Summary: Bottom line for me is that I'm going to have to return this device, as it doesn't suit my wireless needs, and does not come close. My old Netgear 802.11b router has a noticeably better wireless range. While it should be expected that the 5ghz radio range doesn't reach that of the 2.4ghz radio, 25 feet with no obstructions is horrible.

Competent wireless router with lots of capabilities
by forkboy on February 10, 2011
Pros: Easy set-up using Cisco software, but also allows for web browser configuration; USB port for additional connectivity; long power cord; lots of customization options
Cons: Pricey; customization options a bit over-whelming; range doesn't seem any better than my former < $80 Cisco and NetGear wireless routers

Summary: This review may be a bit premature as we've only had the device for a week, but so far so good and I'll update/post new if anything changes regarding my initial impressions.
A quick follow-up to my original post: pretty much everything I said before still holds true. I have not found need or want to explore the additional myriad of set-up options at this time.
Acquired on sale, which made the price more palatable. The retail price is steep if you only need an every day router. I think no small amount of the price is reflected in the great customization options available to the end-user.
The signal strength appears strong, but I cannot say it appears to be any stronger than our previous routers. The addition of the N-specification is nice seeing how my iMac supports such and we've been using a G-spec router before.
I'm looking forward to taking advantage of the USB port so that I can readily make an upcoming non-wireless printer purchase into a wireless set-up without having to purchase a USB plug-in device. Clearly the addition of the USB port adds to the price and it's a nice feature to have for projects like mine or adding a wireless NAS or back-up hard drive.
I would comment on how nice it looks, but how it looks is really unimportant as long as it does its job well.
I'm hoping none of the issues others have mentioned here in the reviews comes to roost in our home.
So... as I cannot say there is anything overly outstanding about the device, but that it handles everything competently thus far I'm sticking with a mid-level rating.
Updated on Mar 6, 2011
I can say that I remain somewhat disappointed with the overall range of this device. I concede our house is fairly large and the device sits in one corner of the basement, but I had hoped for a stronger signal than we had been getting from our previous Netgear device.
Not that we ever went without coverage anywhere in the house, but the furthest point (the master bedroom) sees signal strength drop off to typically one or two bars on whatever device being used at that time.
If I had the purchase to make all over again I would still make it though as I find the coverage sufficient and cannot wait to take advantage of the built-in USB port with a new printer.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nothing flashy to justify the high price tag.
by net__surfer on January 26, 2011
Pros: OK enclosure design, decent wireless range.
Cons: Way too pricy with what it offers; Can't get the performance boost without a matching new wireless adapter; it runs hot;

Summary: This router gets hot when turned on, even without running heavy traffic, I dare not to put it in the small corner in my entertainment center I usually put my router, afraid that it might get too hot, don't like the big laptop-like power adapter either.
I used the web GUI without using the Cisco Connect, partly because I read the CNet review that Cisco Connect does not co-work well with the the web GUI.
I was disappointed after playing with it for a couple of days, I kept asking myself "that is all?", other than the so-called 450Mbps performance which can only be realized with to-be-purchased wireless adapter, I did not see any new feature/benefit with this router. With that, I simply think this router is not worth the hefty price I paid, so I am taking it back to the store.
If it's for less than $129.99, maybe I'll be happy with it, but not for current price.4 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

Internet connection drops, upgrading f/w did nothing.
by coyfsr on April 10, 2013
Pros: New firmware provide a nice web interface for all the good it is.
Cons: Daily drops of the internet connection (local devices all see each other fine) since going to firmware 2.1.39. But the earlier 2.0.37 had problems too so that's no solution.
Summary: The e4200 v2 appears to be a completely unreliable router. The older WRT54G series has worked FLAWLESSLY for me. When I bought the 4200 last year it had f/w ...
Summary: The e4200 v2 appears to be a completely unreliable router. The older WRT54G series has worked FLAWLESSLY for me. When I bought the 4200 last year it had f/w 2.0.37. And at that time it would intermittently drop VPN wireless connections. No amount of tweaking MTU or channels or what not would permanently fix it. So I reverted back to the 54G and it worked FLAWLESSLY (sorry for the shouting).
Well, I noticed that Cisco came out with f/w 2.1.39 so I switched back to the e4200. Now... once a day it loses the internet connection. The lan devices both wired and wireless all see each other just fine but nothing outside on the WAN. Resetting the router is the only remedy I've found. And so far I've found no permanent correction. And I'm certainly not going to contact Cisco what possible good would that do?
Bottom line... the older, less sophisticated less touchy-feely-any-moron-can-use-them routers work FLAWLESSLY,i.e. the ones made by Linksys before they sold out. The e4200 looks to be a fancy looking POS which is probably going back in the box to collect dust and maybe get a test after the next fw release.
