Cisco Linksys E4200 v2 Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900 router price range: $69.99 - $288.52
- Reviewed by: Dong Ngo

The good: Cisco Systems' Linksys E4200 v2 Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900 router offers true dual-band with concurrent 450Mbps, Gigabit Ethernet, excellent storage and 5GHz wireless throughput, and a nice set of networking features. The router looks good and includes Cisco Connect, an intuitive software application that helps home users set up and manage a home wireless network with ease.
The bad: The Linksys E4200 v2's range throughput speed on the 2.4GHz band could be better. The included desktop application can't be used to manage all of the router's settings, doesn't work well with the Web interface, and requires a live Internet connection for the initial setup.
The bottom line: The Linksys E4200 v2 makes a great upgrade to the original version and an excellent investment for those who need a fast, feature-rich, advanced, yet easy-to-use router for the home or even a small business.

Device wouldn't sync - Linksys Support horrible
by bigbrigand on August 16, 2012
Pros: The device is sized for convenient placement, and its wireless signal strength is powerful.
Cons: Device would not reset, and Linksys Support provided me with directions to "correct" the problem and did nothing to really help me resolve my issue.

Summary: I was excited to get my new router and replace a Dlink router that had a less powerful wireless signal. Instead, I simply managed to waste several hours trying to resolve the issue with lackluster help from Linksys Support. This had to be one of the worst support experiences I have EVER had.
The issue I originally had with the router was that it would not work with my cable modem. I followed Linksys Support's directions from two online chat sessions (several times for each set of instructions), and nothing worked. One issue I had was that the device would not reset, and the WAN port appeared not to work. However, the support personnel did not take the time to really troubleshoot my issue. The support was so poor that the second chat person would ignore the information I had given her just seconds before.
I have had several different routers over the years, and worked with hundreds for clients - this router is the worst I have ever worked with.
I won't say that all Linksys routers are bad devices, but I will say that Linksys has the worst support I have had the bad luck to deal with. -
Worth buying if you have a network person who can help.
by Rush_Line on July 25, 2012
Pros: Fast, Stable, dependable have not had one issue in over a year.
Cons: Difficulty with initially setting up and maintaining configuration (I expected it to be easier due to the asking price) most notably with regards to the USB port.

Summary: I purchased this router for a family member and set up their network of 3 wireless laptops, 2 wired pc's, an Ipod type device, a sewing machine, a bluray player, 2 printers and a SeaGate external hard drive that is now acting as her network hosting media server. I had some issues getting it set up and I am technically competent, but that said, it is one of the easiest ones I've worked with.

Summary: used this router for almost a yesar and loved it. wanted to get the one of the app-enabled routers with cisco connect cloud, so i gave it aways and bought an ea3500. i suppose the is a downgrade in numbers, but it also works great and i wouldn't trade the cisco connect cloud thing for the world (no other routers have it).

Rock-solid router performance!
by corffer on June 30, 2012
Pros: Consistently fast, in a house where 3+ simultaneous video streams are common.
Excellent reliability, no reboots needed.
Easy Setup

I noticed most of the negative comments are from folks wanting to slam their own firmware on the router, or have some nostalgia about the old rabbit-ear antenna models. I suppose this sleek and fast router isn't for you. But, for the rest of us, who just want simple reliable and fast Wi-Fi out of the box, this is the perfect router. -
Horrible router
by ldrrp on February 15, 2012
Pros: Speed, webrowsing
Cons: the DMZ feature does NOT work at all on the e4200v2, I have tried to escalate to Cisco technical support to no avail. In fact, after a lot of time on the phone multiple times, now they want me to pay another $9.99 to install some software
Summary: Do not get this router

Summary: Gigabit connections aren't nearly as fast as they should be. 802.11n with a laptop 10 feet away from router can not stream HD video from a Windows Home Server on a 10/100/1000 connection.
It is controlling my bridged DSL modem and is constantly knocked offline, multiple times a day. I have to power cycle the modem to get it to reconnect to the internet.
All the issues mentioned above weren't issues with my network when it was running a WRT600n. The only thing I changed, and very much regret, is replacing the WRT600n with the E4200.1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Don't waste your time or your money unless you are a novice user looking to get a plug and play router that no one will ever re-config or need to mess with, that has decent range and speed.
SEVERAL important features missing from this hunk o crap. Where other Linksys routers are generally packed with the features needed for routine IT practices, this Router lacks damn near all of them. NO DMZ, NO advanced wireless config, limited port forwarding & worst of all - NO STATIC IP ASSIGNMENT!!!!! At least on the firmware version i was on which i upgraded immediately to the latest one 3 months ago, still no fixes or feature adds.
There was limited and poor functionality with respect to general IT practices, numerous firmware bugs that were as of the time we bought one, unresolved. One thing that is a must for router buyers is that want is good firewall with necessary configuration options, which sadly this router lacks.
18 reviews 11 of which have 1 star or less. Take our word for it. Save your money and continue looking for a better alternative than this sorry excuse of a router. I personally recommend trendnet's or netgear is usually a decent choice.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

This is not a good router.
by rcrichards on June 7, 2012
Pros: None for me.
Cons: Poor performance, drops connections. I called Cisco and they even told me they were having problems with this router.

Summary: I purchased this router largely on Doug Ngo's recommendation. Doug, do you know what Cisco's plan is to resolve the issues. I have talked to several people who purchased this router and are experiencing the same problems I experience. User ratings across the internet seem to be poor and as I stated above, when I called Cisco tech support they acknowledged they were seeing a lot of issues with this router.
