by avanthomme on March 25, 2010
Pros: ease of setup
Cons: DISRUPTIVE SERVICE, INCOMPETENT TECHNICAL SUPPORT

mutlistep setup, requires opening a dialog box to print
by burkebri on November 19, 2008
Pros: Price, Wireless N and USB connection to a shared printer
Cons: installation is tedious with mutiple tech support calls, firmware update, printer sharing software download and permanent three steps to print a document. I should have stayed with the SMC Barricade.
Summary: this replaced an SMC Barricade router that was occasionally dropping the internet. The SMC product offered a simple one-step installation, had a USB connection to a printer and was transparent ...

This router is junk: continuous disconnections / slow.
by jmacgowans on March 11, 2012
Pros: Good price and easy setup.
Cons: Continuously disconnects and must be rebooted/restarted - sometimes it requires unplugging from power in order to regain connection to modem. Mostly slow wireless connection with intermittent fast speed. Signal won't reach other side of 2600sqft home
Summary: Spend a little extra for a better router.

by CdnUser on August 13, 2011
Pros: Very attractive price ($30 off).
Excellent signal strength.
Great range.
Solid Tech. Support help for the setup (on a Saturday!)
See my Summary comments for more info.Cons: I'm not giving the DIR-628 five stars because of the AOL toolbar issue (see the March 8, 2010 comment by review123 for details).

Summary: I'm pleased w/ this D-Link DIR-628 dual-band wireless router. In terms of signal strength, I'm getting 5/5 bars on my 3-year-old Compaq laptop. My office is one storey below and at the other end of the house (a large home) from the router, which sits in the upstairs office.
Before I opened the box, I checked a couple of websites for comments, incl. this one, and noted here that someone wrote a comment entitled "With the router you will get uninstallable AOL toolbar". I called D-Link Tech. Support and the guy (w/ a heavy East Indian accent; the Support Center was surely overseas) was patient and helpful. Within 10 minutes, I had my old wireless G router removed and the DIR-628 set up and two computers (wired desktop, wireless laptop) accessing the Internet, no problem.
Will I still think the DIR-628 is a 4-star unit after the warranty expires in a year? Hopefully. -
Good speed and coverage but fails on USB connections
by denret on June 21, 2011
Pros: Good speed ratings, easy setup with Vista using the D-Link CD. Security is good and never locks up or drop any of the wireless devices.
Cons: USB port works great when it works, but has to be rebooted at least once in the typical 24hr period to restore the connection between the router and the USB devices. D-Link customer support is clueless.
Dual band capability is not simultaneous. One bandSummary: OK for basic router functions, but not what I primarily bought it for.....the USB printer function and dual band capabilites.

Amazing. Ideal for home servers.
by nbohaychuk on June 4, 2011
Pros: Wireless-N 300 is great. I have walls with lead paint and this powerful router isn't effected much by them. I have a home server running Ubuntu Server Edition x64 11.04 LTS and this router has port forwarding and something D-Link seems to have dubbed "vir
Cons: It can't broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously, and that is why I didn't rate it 5 stars.

Summary: This router has stunned me with its performance, far exceeding my expectations from the moment I first set it up. I have noticed that Wireless N 300 is actually faster than the 100mbps ethernet ports on the router, there is a noticeable difference for web browsing, I am just saying this from personal experience and my desktop is just slightly slower than a high-performance gaming computer. If you pick this router up, you will probably notice that it seems to weigh slightly more than the average router. That is because it is better than the average router :D.

With the router you will get uninstallable AOL toolbar
by review123 on March 8, 2010
Pros: There is nothing special about this router.
Cons: D-link and AOL hijack your browser.

Summary: I installed the D-link router and now my browser displays the AOL toolbar all the time and my default search changed to the AOL search. If I close the AOL toolbar or use other seaches, all web pages will be loaded with errors saying that the bar is missing. This program is hidden and you cannot easily uninstall it. It interferes with the web browsing. I contacted D-link, the support tried uninstall it but they were not able to do it. I was transferred to supervisors, then supervisors of supervisors. No one could uninstall this AOL toolbar. Finally, they told me to find by myself anyone in AOL who would be willing to help me.

Slow, Poor Range, Difficult to Install
by swamp-dog on February 20, 2010
Pros: Can't think of any pros
Cons: Bought for new notebook- N tech. Existing router 7 yr old Linksys. Linksys has stronger signal 200 ft from house than D-Link. D-Link dropped connection while Linksys worked. D-Link tested slower. D-Link installed OK on Windows 7, but not on XP.
Summary: A waste of time and money. The old non-N linksys worked better - better range and faster - than new N D-Link DIR-628. Difficult to install on XP - instructions ...
Summary: A waste of time and money. The old non-N linksys worked better - better range and faster - than new N D-Link DIR-628. Difficult to install on XP - instructions basically useless. Installed OK on Windows 7, but not by following the instructions. Could not set it up as open access, even though I did not want password protection.
This is the second N router I have tried and neither is as good as the old Linksys. -
Great Value Great Range
by legendair1 on December 30, 2009
Pros: Stable Router, great range, and fast Internet streaming with a range of different platform (XP-MAC-Vista).
Cons: Set up is a bit long, the 5Hz band do not transmit along the 2.4 HZ and is only avail on N signals
Summary: I Return the linksys 160n model (Comparable) because of resets every 3 days for speed degradation. This device is way more superior for the same price

Great Range
by obtrunco on December 21, 2009
Pros: Like the fact that you can adjust the power output. Has good range and speed despite not using MIMO.
Cons: Support is terrible. They use someone reading a troubleshoot script.

Summary: The 1st time I purchased it would always kick out or not accept one of the PC's on the network and later on it resetted itself to factory mode but I exchaged it and the 2nd one works fine. Can't use the dual band simultaneously which leaves out some devices which can't use that band at all such as iPhone. Also you have to install a driver on all your network devices in order to interact with any USB storage device connected to the router if not, the USB device will be invisible to these computers. Price is ok.
