Buy Something Else

Pros: Price, relatively easy set up, comes in black
Cons: Consistently loses connection and has to be rebooted. Bogs down at times as well.

Don't Even Thing About It

Summary: I got this thinking a new router would be much better than the 5-year old Linksys I had that died of old age. Turns out it was much WORSE. It constantly dropped connection and it could not handle watching streaming video and playing xbox with its supposedly faster LAN ports. Sometimes, it would just not give internet to devices, even if they could connect to it. The only way to fix that was to reset the router. I was resetting it 4-5 times a day!
The support was TERRIBLE. First call didn't fix anything. Second call actually left me unable to connect with any computer or phone. Third call was also useless. They basically told me to just take it back. I've never seen worse Technical support. They don't seem to care about the poor quality of their product. I ended up taking their advice and returning it in less than 2 weeks.
Do yourself a favor and skip this device and anything from D-Link. They don't deserve our business.

Summary: I had a reason recently to upgrade my DIR-615, so I went with the 651. However, even in the same room, my laptop consistently lost connection with the router. Support told me to turn off any advanced DNS services and turn on DNS relay under setup/networking. I do not have any advanced services, and turning on relay was of little value. My logs showed a pattern of the wireless client being associated with the router, and open and authenticated, then the client as deauthenticated. In the end I don't have time to troubleshoot a brand new device so it went back to Fry's.

Never buy it, unless you want to throw out some cash.
by qwertypollok on May 7, 2013
Pros: Nice package, good black color.
Cons: I have 100/100 mb fiber internet, but this router gives only 6-8 Mbp on output. This router is for old ppl who are reading new online that's it. It cant do anything else. Cant handle more then 1 device - losing connection.
Summary: Don't buy it. Better add some more money but buy a good product. This one is just a waste of money.

New D-Link model, needs to fix some issues.
by genis_sanchez on June 13, 2011
Pros: Reduced factor form, nice specifications (on paper) and half the price compared to Cisco's Valet Plus model. This D-Link DIR-651 was recommended by the store folk (Officedepot) as the one he also had and with great performance and long range for the signa
Cons: We experienced frequent disconnections on several devices connected at once and occasional fading of the wireless signal. It also gave problems reassigning IP addresses. First call to support asked to remove the 'enhanced DNS' option, you would wonder wh

Summary: If you are not a heavy user this new DIR-651 might be fine and at good price. If you require more performance though you might run into the same problems we had. We have a SIP phone wired to the router, a Sony internet TV connected on WiFi and 2 people working from home regularly each with a laptop and of course 2 smartphones also on WiFi. Perhaps too much for this new baby with FW 1.0 only. Finally I had to replace it with a Valet Plus model from Cisco which I can only say has worked flawless so far for the last week, also providing stronger signal upstairs in our townhouse.
