Dlink | Not a good router for the cost.
by blakis08 on September 18, 2007
Pros: Great looks, great packaging, great range.
Cons: Slow speed, connection issues, bad for gaming, lights are way too bright.
Summary: I bought this router hoping to increase my speed and range, but just found it to be a hassle.

I am a teenager who knows his way around a computer and I still had problems trying to get online.
I found the looks great and the instructions perfect but when it came down to performance - this product failed.
Plus, when I plugged in my PS3 to play WarHawk, I kept getting disconnected due to a faulty connection. It was also slow [laggy].
My advice is to go with Buffalo, which I had before this router.
I know have the Buffalo AirStation Nfiniti and I love it. I gave it a 9/10.
Thanks Buffalo! -
The best so far!
by popereel on September 10, 2007
Pros: Lightning fast response, easy firmware updates, fairly decent distance
Cons: I would love greater "G" & "B" distance

Summary: I have tried many routers over the years and so far this one is the best. Prior to this I was using a Belkin Pre-N - good distance but choppy performance especially with VOIP. The Belkin could not handle more than one wireless user at a time without affecting the routing speed.
With the DIR-655 I was able to access my work server faster than I have ever seen before.
I would like to see better G & B range but having said that, it still provides a stronger signal to my Mac Mini and HP Laptop than the Belkin. -
Worst support ever

Summary: Have you ever hated a company because of terrible service? I expected premium performance and service from this device, especially since it seems to be a sophisticated, state of the art device. However, as soon as I needed assistance from dlink, I was told "we don't support that problem, we only support getting connected to the Internet". I am not surprised anymore to find unhelpful technicians, but their web support page is no better, it is sparse and there is no forum. In my experience, forums have been the best place to find knowledgeable people. I suppose dlink does not want a forum because everyone would see all of the complaints.
I can not get this router to see my printer. It is a Brother printer, and the folks at Brother were extremely helpful and tried many ways to get a connection. After much effort, they said it must be the router. When you call dlink, the answering machine says please have Network Magic installed so that we can assist you better, but the technician said they don't support or care about Network Magic.
If someone knows how to hook up a printer to this router, or where there is a forum, please let me know.
Thanks

Fourth times a charm?

Summary: I honestly bought this router on four seperate occasions, and returned them! I couldn't figure it out, the reviews were all excellent, people raved about it, but when I took it home and played around with it, was getting really slow speeds. Then my netgear router recently died, decided not to go with them again since it died, and reread reviews. Again, this is the top router. Bought it again, updated firmwares, and am impressed so far!
Fast, easy to setup, has usb port.

Very Good Router for the money !
by brianmunro on August 25, 2007
Pros: Doubled my wireless speed
Cons: There's a board which goes with this to install in a desktop which doubles the cost ! OUCH !

Summary: I bought only the router hoping it would be fast enough and give me enough range without buying the extra card for our other desktop (running off the router), and it IS ! Having the "N Extreme" router alone doubled my speed and range. Getting the card to go with it would not make it any faster just extend the range. So I'll keep the extra $130 ! Definatly would recommend this router as an upgrade to a "G" router for someone with a large house and or range problems.

Summary: everything was great until I tried file sharing. Turns out D-Link doesn't support file sharing and you must use NetMagic, oh but you have to buy that after the trial period ends. Free version is worthless. Netmagic doesn't support Linux. Total waste of an evening, taking it back first thing in the morning.

Summary: Our NetGear Rangemax router bit the dust due to a power brown-out. Even though Draft-N specs aren't quite final, I had to buy something. I bit the bullet and bought the D-Link DIR-655 after reading many positive comments.
We have a mixed environment here that includes Windows 2000, XP, and Ubuntu wired desktops, an Asterisk server, a few IP phones, an older model Apple G4 Powerbook, a new iMac, and a new Dell Inspiron Laptop running Windows XP Professional. Which of these devices do you suppose repeatedly refused to connect? The new XP professional laptop. Of course, the XP laptop is my wife's school laptop, so it had to work.
Because I consider myself a networking professional, I stubbornly refused to call tech support, so I can't comment on D-Link's service. Instead I did everything networking-wise I know how to to and was finally able to get things to connect properly.
I can't say it was easy, but this router's performance does seem to have been worth the effort. Overall, speed is excellent and there is a noticable improvement in voice quality. -

Summary: This router is as fast as advertised and immediately payed dividends by increasing my download and upload speeds. I am replacing a Netgear Rangemax 240 which seemed sluggish after one year. I tested the D-Link with Speakeasy.net and the results were great. Downloads were 10142kbps and the upload was 3538kbps varying only slightly on multiple checks. I am running the router in mixed modes 802.11n, 802.11g/b and I have not encountered any problems to date. I am also using this to connect to my Tivo wirelessly and it consistently reports a signal strength of 95%. All in all, this is a great router.

WAY better than Linksys!!

Summary: I bought this to replace a Linksys WRT300N that would connect wirelessly, disconnect for no reason, and reconnect about 30 minutes later. I got it home, ran the CD, followed instructions, was up and running in minutes. The ONLY problem was the fault of the Network Magic program that D-Link wants you to install. The security features are good . . . so good that I had trouble connecting my network printer and network storage drive. Luckily, there was an update that required me to uninstall the program and restart my computer. When I restarted, they both appeared without trouble. I still haven't installed the update and am running fine. The program is needed for tech support, though.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: D-Link
- Part number: DIR-655
- Description: The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router is a draft 802.11n compliant device that delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices. Connect the Xtreme N Gigabit Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, videos, printers, and network storage. Powered by Xtreme N technology and equipped with three external antennas, this router provides superior wireless coverage for larger homes and offices, or for users running bandwidth-intensive applications. The DIR-655 also includes a 4-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit switch that connects Gigabit wired devices for lag-free network gaming and faster file transfers. With D-Link's Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic are analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. The DIR-655's embedded WISH Stream Engine improves wireless media by moving time-sensitive tagged traffic to the front of the WMM queue and optimizing RF settings for optimal wireless throughput. WISH (Wireless Intelligent Stream Handling) automatically detects multimedia, VoIP and Online Gaming applications, requiring no user configuration. It works transparently with other QoS technologies to immediately improve wireless media speed. The Xtreme N Gigabit Router supports the latest wireless security features to help prevent unauthorized access, be it from over a wireless network or the Internet. Support for WEP, WPA, and WPA2 standards ensure that you will be able to use the best possible encryption regardless of your client devices. In addition, this Xtreme N Gigabit Router utilizes Dual Active Firewalls (SPI and NAT) to prevent potential attacks from across the Internet. Using the SharePort Network USB Utility, you can connect an external hard drive or multifunction printer to the router's USB port to share disk space, printing or scanning functions among family members or a group of users. This USB port also supports D-link 3G adapter connection, so you can connect your router to a 3G mobile service to provide Internet access to a group while traveling.
