The good: The D-Link DIR-857 HD Media Router 3000 offers stellar Wi-Fi performance on the 5GHz frequency band and a nice set of useful features. The router is easy to use and has an effective QoS feature to help fuel HD media streaming, gaming, and VoIP.
The bad: The D-Link DIR-857 doesn't offer 802.11ac and its performance on the 2.4GHz band is lacking. The router's built-in network storage performance doesn't come close to the speed of USB 3.0.
The bottom line: Though not perfect, the D-Link DIR-857 HD Media Router 3000 makes a great router for homes thanks to its top-notch performance on the 5GHz band and a nice set of features.

Won't stay connected on the 2.5ghz channel.
by Doug1313 on October 12, 2012
Pros: Streaming video like Netflix seems to work well and I can still use two additional computers at the same time, most of the time, but of course they are slow.
Cons: Streaming video works well through wired connection while using one computer on the 5ghz channel and one on the 2.5ghz channel. Then the low frequency channel just drops out and I have to reboot the router to get it connected. Happens often.
Summary: My other router (and old Linksys) still worked but it kept resetting itself and I got tired of having to re-enter all of the security stuff. This router sounded great ...
Summary: My other router (and old Linksys) still worked but it kept resetting itself and I got tired of having to re-enter all of the security stuff. This router sounded great because I stream video a lot. It turns out that it is more trouble than the old one. I have to reboot the router at least once a day. D-Link phone support (from India) improved the situation some but did not cure it. A waste of money, I am going back to Linksys.

Greatest router since the DGL-4500 and DIR-825
by FURRYNUTZ on April 17, 2012
Pros: Stable, Solid, flexible and dependable. Easy to set up and use. Great for gaming, streaming and handling large traffic platforms. Great heat dissipation and ventilation.
USB 3.0 Supporting.Cons: Possible QoS issue on ISP up-links higher than 2Mb. Dlink is aware and reviewing.
No external antenna connection abilities.
No WiFi or PC LAN connection status LED.Summary: 450Mb WiFi speed is automatic with a supporting 450Mb Client adapter, no set up needed. WiFi file transfer speeds exceeded on 300Mb and 450mb connections.

Over all this is a great router that will, in many ways, take the next step in internet, networking, streaming video and gaming experiences. Even though the DGL 4500 and DIR-825 are still great routers, I presume the DIR-857 will be the flag ship for DLink. Ya the price is a bit high, however so was the DGL-4500 and it was worth every penny. I feel the 857 is the same. This is the best router and will compete and surpass all others.
Remember, 5Ghz is best in "Line of Sight" operation. Building materials such as walls, doors and other items can and will effect 5ghz performance and range.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Overall a good router. It is pricey- for such poor media server abilities. I think they should really work out these problems. DLink support Tier 1 and 2 have absolutely no clue how to support their own products. Tier 3 tried to call me once. No follow up calls beyond that. They must not be real concerned with supporting their products or are overwhelmed supporting their products. Buyer be aware of what your expections are and what you really want out of this router. Currently I am buying a usb 3.0 hub and another usb 3.0 external hard drive to try and test multiple drives for this product.

stable, USB 3.0 is Fast!, dual bands work well together
by dlpanak on April 22, 2012
Pros: *rock stable for 9 connected devices in home network
*both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz work well with excellent speed and balance
*USB 3.0 is FAST!
*IPV6 ready
*extensive menus and configuration options
*HDTV movies streamed with glitchesCons: *onboard clock is glitchy (without NTP server enabled)
*every change requested a router re-boot, taking 60sec minimum.
*5.0GHz range not quite as good as 2.4GHz range
*a little pricey (>$200)Summary: I upgraded from a dir-655, which had worked very well since the latest firmware upgrade a year ago. The dual band architecture of the DIR-857 looked interesting(i had been ...
Summary: I upgraded from a dir-655, which had worked very well since the latest firmware upgrade a year ago. The dual band architecture of the DIR-857 looked interesting(i had been running two d-link routers; one at 802.11n, and one at 802.11a/b/g).
i meant *HDTV movies streamed withOUT glitches!
For nine connected devices (one at 5.0GHz-n and the rest at 2.4GHz-n and -g), the onboard wireless status monitor shows connections speeds ranging from 54M to 144M. For the 5.0GHz-n device, switching to 2.4GHz-n would show increase the displayed signal strengh.
A connected WD 2TB USB3.0 drive functioned very well for file backups - surprisingly fast compared to USB2.0
I did experience some glitches withthe onboard cloack - it would loose time with every re-boot and for some reason would always change by 1 hr after saving then re-booting with DST selecte. Enabling the NTP server (not the default) fixed the problem and kept the onboard clock on time.

Efficient router with Stable speeds
by City- on April 2, 2012
Pros: *Gave me a speed increase (8Mbs to be precise)
*Constant speeds with no ups or downs
*Great range on the 2.4Ghz
*5GHz network runs very efficiently (Especially for those who live around a large network)Cons: *Price is a bit steep ($200 CAD retail)

*A mandatory installation to setup the router might take a long time, or even frustrate you.Summary: To start off, I'm not some professional reviewer or have much experience writing them, but this particular product didn't have one so I thought I would share my ...
Summary: To start off, I'm not some professional reviewer or have much experience writing them, but this particular product didn't have one so I thought I would share my experiences just to give one perspective on the product to anyone interested in one as I could not find a single review on this product.
To start off the Dlink router (the full names pretty long) is an efficient router with a far range on the 2.4GHz bandwidth and should reach every part of your home as it did for me. The 5.0GHz network however doesn't quite reach the same distance as the 2.4GHz bandwidth which is known to occur but had a decent range nonetheless on my network card (Intel 6300)
The dual bandwidth also maintains a steady speed after connecting multiple devices (6 is as far as I've tested) and holds steady speeds among its devices. The router's greatest strength I personally believe is the steady streaming it gives at high speeds and if your the person whose had the problem of speeds going up and down with no stability as I have, this router will ultimately end that problem.
The only problem I have faced with this is the mandatory installation it comes with. To setup your network the router requires you to do various step by step nuances that might get on your nerve, but once you have it down managing your network will become a breeze, setting up your personal account to access your network settings and managing security afterwords is also quickly done without any trouble.
TL:DR To conclude and to anyone who wants a one paragraph summery, this router maintains a steady high speed without any instability with a large range on its 2.4GHz bandwidth and has a decent range to its 5.0GHz counterpart.1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
