The good: True dual-band; great throughput performance; intuitive and responsive browser interface; gigabit LAN and WAN; easy to set up; supports separate wireless networks for guests; network activity display offers quick access to a variety of network information; convenient preset settings.
The bad: Middling range; confusing network activity display; expensive; bulky design; no print-serving or NAS functionality.
The bottom line: The D-Link Xtreme N Duo Media Router DIR-855 is a stable performer with excellent Web interface. But because it comes in a bulky, old-school design, has a relatively short range, and carries a hefty price tag, consider waiting for the price to drop before investing in this router.

Summary: It is a good device it worked just like it should but I didn't notice any real difference then the router I was using, a D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N. I had just bought the 655 when I received the 855 as a gift. I was so excieted to get it up and running and it has performed flawlessly. Easy to set up etc. etc. but so was the 655 and it cost way less. I found it online for 80 dollars with free shipping. That is less then a third of the cost of the 855. So Bottom line is just NO WAY. There is no way I could justify the cost of this device when others perform almost of as well for way way less.

Summary: Although easy to install, it did not perform. Constantly lost internet connection -- My son was unable to maintain connection to his Xbox or stream movies and laptop connections were impossible. Called Tech Support 3 times and each representative made the situation worse. One tech didn't seem to understand the problem at all and one rep tried to tell me it was my internet provider's problem although my internet worked just fine until I installed this router! After the 3rd try, I boxed it back up, reconnected my old Belkin, returned it and exchanged it for the Linksys WRT400N which works GREAT!!!
This was the first time I was disappointed buying a product based on CNET editor reviews.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE
by efjk on November 17, 2009
Pros: None at all
Cons: Not suitable for Static IP addresses. Useless support.
Summary: This router would not set up using my Static IP setup. I had to use the Dynamic option but the connection kept dropping rendering the router unusable.

The setup is not at all simple and in fact I was advised by the tech guys at the vendor (Broadbandbuyer) NOT to use the Wizard in any circumstances!
The reset button did not work and the only way to restore the manufacturers settings was through the web interface.
D-Link support was the worst I have ever encountered and offered no help at all.
The router is going back today and I will not be buying any more D-Link porducts - their abysmal technical support alone is enough to guarantee that!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not capable of HD streaming!
by empo-RS on September 24, 2009
Pros: Easy to setup. The web interface is ok....but even that has a few bugs.
Cons: Wireless connection drops randomly. Cannot stream HD media from PC to XBOX360. Well overpriced.

Summary: I bought this router (based on this review actually) along with the DWA160, specifically so I could stream movies to my XBOX360 from my PC. Things started off ok, I was able to stream HD movies to my Xbox but then the wireless connection would keep dropping (even when not streaming). So I upgraded to the latest firmware, followed a few instructions from a mod on the dlink forums and now things are even worse!!! Now I can't stream at all and I still get random drop-outs. I haven't bothered calling tech support because judging by the comments on the dlink forums it would be a complete waste of time. So let this be a warning to anyone thinking of buying this router. Do not buy this router! It sucks!

Simply the best wireless router on the market.
by azz710 on December 19, 2008
Pros: Excellent wireless speed and reach. Excellent performance, in general. Fast, simple web-based configuration. Stable operation (no memory leaks, no need for periodic rebooting as with many other home routers).
Cons: Price, availability at retail.
Summary: If you have the cash, buy this router and you will probably discover it will be the last router you buy for many, many years.

**** poor support for the "high end" model
by mrfritz on January 18, 2012
Pros: I can not think of any except a pretty cool LCD Display
Cons: **** poor support, they are refusing even to support IPV6 but will support it on the cheaper product. I wish I can return it and get the cheaper one!
Summary: **** poor support.. over priced basic unit with an LCD display... = wasted money.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: D-Link
- Part number: DIR-855
- Description: The D-Link Xtreme N Duo Media Router (DIR-855) is the latest addition to the Award-winning Xtreme N product family. The Duo technology in the DIR-855 supports dualband (2.4GHz & 5GHz) wireless signals at the same time. This allows you to check e-mail and browse the Internet using the 2.4GHz band while simultaneously streaming High-Definition (HD) movies and other media on the 5GHz band. The DIR-855 is designed for users looking to get a true HD wireless connection that can handle multiple HD video streams throughout the house, while being backward compatible with your existing 802.11g products. With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including Voice over IP (VoIP), Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like Streaming Video could pause or delay. With the D-Link Intelligent QoS Prioritization Technology, wired and wireless traffic are analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. This enables multiple applications like Streaming Video and Gaming to stream smoothly to your TV or PC.
