Must have Windows XP SP3 to use Cisco set up software.
by kevintobrien on February 1, 2011
Pros: I haven't used it, since I couldn't install the set up software, so I can't comment on its pro's.
Cons: If you use Windows XP, you must have SP3 installed in order to use the Cisco Connect software to set up the router. Otherwise, you must install the router manually, and you may not have access to all its features.

Summary: There are two ways to set up Cisco routers that are part of their E series and Valet series of wireless routers: 1) with the included Cisco Connect software that makes set up very easy, or 2) manually, thru the web browser interface. The manual method may be too difficult for people who are not very knowledgeable about setting up routers and wifi networks.
However, if your operating system is Windows XP, you cannot install the Cisco Connect software unless you are using Windows XP SP3 (i.e., with Microsoft's service pack 3 installed). The outside of the box states that Windows XP SP3 is a minimum system requirement, and Cisco tech support confirmed this.
Many Windows XP users do not have SP3 installed. I only have SP2, and I don't want to risk installing SP3 because it was widely reported that installing SP3 caused a lot of people serious trouble. I am not going to take that risk just so that I can use Cisco Connect Software. I don't know why Cisco made SP3 a requirement. I think it's the only software that I have come across that requires SP3.
So, if you don't have SP3 installed, don't buy one of these series of routers unless you are prepared to install it manually. Also, Cisco tech support told me that some of the features on some of the models can't be used if you don't install the Cisco Connect software. But they told me that all of the features of their new model E4200 can be set up and used from the manual web browser interface, without installing the Cisco Connect software.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

by RoyRoyCnet on July 14, 2011
Pros: bought it few days ago
super strong signal for a wl router @ this price (receive strong signal everywhere in a 2 stories building)
a lot of security options to play with
stylish look
worth the priceCons: the installation CD requires your PC to be XP sp3 or above before you can start using the software,
without the software, you cannot even get the admin password, thats very unfriendly.
took an hour to update from xp2 to xp3, lucky my previous connectionSummary: very high quality product
though, stupid setup CD .........:(
after setup, everything's awesome
it's a wall penetrator!

-Has a built-in SPI FirewallCons: -No gigabit Ethernet (speeds up transferring files between machines hooked up to the router physically)
-Not dual band
but hey, can't complain... it's an entry level router after all.Summary: Overall I am very happy with this router.

It was much easier to set up then my previous 3com router, which I also really liked. Just pop in the disk and follow the instructions and bang your set to go. I did need to use some of the advanced features which are comfortable and easy to use. -

Setup software very difficult to use.
by tazmaman on January 6, 2011
Pros: I do no know of any good features due to the fact the SmartKey forces admin password and Security key to be the same. So I cannot provide any Pro response. I am going to return mine as soon as possible
Cons: If you use the SmartKey software then they force you to make the admin password and the wireless seurity key the same. If you want to make them different then you must set up the router manually.
Summary: Very poor design in my opinion. I have been very dissatisfied with the WRT54G because of system disconnects, but thought since Cisco had bought out linksys maybe they would be ...
Summary: Very poor design in my opinion. I have been very dissatisfied with the WRT54G because of system disconnects, but thought since Cisco had bought out linksys maybe they would be better. However this restriction to me is a very poor design. Your admin password and security key should never have to be the same.

Complete Disaster.
by NeverBuyLinksys on October 21, 2010
Pros: None - didn't work, TERRIBLE customer service.
Cons: Last Linksys router broke after 1 year 2 weeks; this router didn't work and rather than replacing it, Linksys said that I'm INELIGIBLE for replacement, that they could send me another one and I PAY SHIPPING and OH BY THE WAY IT"S REFURBISHED.
Summary: I will NEVER Buy a linksys product again.
