Summary: I had this unit for couple months now and over this period of time I had to constantly unplug and plug the unit back to make it work. It is very unstable. Finally I had enough of it and bought a DLink wireless rounter/print server instead, it works a lot better and cheapter. NEVER A LINKSYS CUSTOMER AGAIN.

Summary: Even thought this router is a dinosaur I love it. Just because it has survived the test of time with limited headaches. I am glad I never threw it away when I bought more "modern" models because I always had to come back to it to keep my network running. Currently I am again searching for a more modern router (this is the fifth time) since this guy is wayyyyy too old. He must be like 90 in electronics years, but the poor guy has done his job with honors.

owned one for 5 years
by kershawr on October 9, 2008
Pros: has good range and works most of the time
Cons: when I first bought this in 2003, it was very stable and worked well. In recent years, it drops alot and must be turned off along with the DSL model and then turned back on. Router first and DSL modem last. Get the new firmware (2005?)

Updated on Oct 9, 2008Summary: it's outdated as others have said. When it gets jittery, reboot about twice a day
It's quite possible that ALL THE DROPPED INTERNET connections are the result of the router and my home wireless phone using the same 2.4GHz channel. Many of those suffering from dropped intenet connections from ANY 2.4GHz router are likely to have the SAME PROBLEM. This will not go away with a new 2.4GHz router. 2.4GHz wireless house phones are common. Newer wirless house phones are 5.8GHz and should eliminate the dropped internet connections from 2.4GHz routers. In other words, it might be easier to buy new home wireless phones than new routers.

Pros: looks nice
Cons: I have the "version 4" model. I was hoping that a firmware rev. might help, but I have the latest firmW:2005 ! Yuk.
Summary: Not recommended. Steer clear of this one.

Do NOT purchase!
by cgpixel on April 15, 2008

Summary: I have used at least 5 different brands of (wired) routers before. This is by far the worst. Before and even after updating to the latest firmware, the router would drop the connection on all wired and wireless computers - a manual restart is required. Seeing the other reviews on this router, this seems to be a factory defect and I would not recommend this router to anyone.
My second worst choice was having to call Linksys's 'advanced' technical support which had me repeat the common sense steps I have already gone through - that call cost me $32 non-refundable dollars.
This is an old router and I don't know why someone would decide to obtain one. Just be aware. -
our first attempt at wireless, 2003ish?
by y0Lorenzo on August 14, 2007
Pros: lots of flasthing lights...

Summary: I NEVER could have streamed video like I do with this guy. This would probably be ok if all you wanted to do was share a printer and had DSL. We have 10Mb cable and it slowed it down on the wireless PCs. I hated when I was backing up my PC for annual reformat, it CONSTANTLY choked on the file transfers.... sucked and mom hated when i moved the LAPTOP, or else i would have just plugged in.
Wireless G adapters connected to a Wireless N router is pretty slick though... -
NO NOT PURCHASE!!!
by rwilminko on October 4, 2006
Pros: None - this product is not worth the money
Cons: Always drops connection - MUST HARD REBOOT!
Summary: I purchased mine about a year ago. I had problems with it right from the start. It would drop all connections, both wireless and wired.
Multiple contacts to Linksys support ...Summary: I purchased mine about a year ago. I had problems with it right from the start. It would drop all connections, both wireless and wired.
Multiple contacts to Linksys support where they would have me do this identical process each time. This took a minimum of one hour each call.
With each call the router would work for a short time (15 minuts to a few days) and then drop again.
The bottome line: Linksys knows they have an issue. They indicated to me that they are working on firmware to correct the known issue. I had to imply that they were canidates for a class action suit for them to take action. They immediatly sent me a new router but the same one. I have it installed and it is working, but we will see how long.
Go the the Linksys wedsite user community to see how many people are having issues with this router. Or do a Google search and see the thousands of people there. -
Works once in a while.
by kraterz on May 30, 2006
Pros: It was cheap. Lots of features.
Cons: Too many dropped connections and freezes.
Summary: I got this cheap with a bundle deal when I signed up for a cable modem line. The web UI is quite well done and is intuitive.

It is quite unstable and needs to be reset every couple of days. I often can't see it on the network at all, and a power cycle restores it and WLAN starts working. It often disappears from the WLAN network for no reason.
If I stream media through this box, it simply dies after a minute or so and you can't even see it on the WLAN after that. If you disable SSID broadcast, nodes can simply not connect to it.
On the whole this is a mediocre product and I wouldn't pay money for it. -
