The good: The Linksys WRT160N comes in a compact, sleek design. It sports an easy-to-use Web interface and offers a good set of networking features. Its included software is very helpful for setting it up with both Macs and PCs.
The bad: The Linksys WRT160N doesn't support the faster Gigabit standard for wired connection, nor does it have USB support.

Summary: Purchased for local non-profit. Installed per directions. When browsing, many DNS errors. E-mail intermittent. Changed DNS servers several times. Called DSL provider who changed modem and tested with laptop. Modem was fine. Reconnected router. Same problems. Ran packet sniffer and DNS was fine but many packet errors (zero length). Returned router to BestBuy and purchased Belkin. No problems! I wasted 2 days trying to get the 160N to work. -

Summary: I was concerned by some of the reviews I had read but I am not disappointed by my purchase. This was by far easier to configure than my g. I even had to configure through my VOIP router and this was no problem. I'm on Vista and this too was not a problem like some of the reviews I read. Don't be afraid to take the leap, you won't regret it.

Total Bust!
by Faztang on January 26, 2009
Pros: Price and Look.
Cons: Set up disk doesn't work, included Easy Link Software Crashes, Desktop hardwired to router and still can't even get a constant connection.

Summary: This device was a complete mess right from the beginning. When the set up disk is at the last step it says Router not found, even though it really is. After calling customer service they admit the start up disk doesn't work. Then there is a program called easy link. After installing that my entire computer would freeze up time and time again. Finally even though I have my desktop hardwired to the router its a 50/50 shot that I get an internet connection, and it's not even wireless access!
It's amazing that this product is out on the market, in my opinion it's no where near completion. -
Never worked correctly, although 'claiming' it was.

Cons: Quality - lack thereof.
Customer support - lack thereof.

Summary: Out of the box, it 'saw' the network and would sporadically allow the wireless laptop internet access and access to files on the desktop. However, the desktop could only very randomly make it to the internet or download email. Two computer experts tried different all sorts of setting changes, but nothing helped. The Linksys customer support (an oxymoron) doesn't exist. I waited several hours, several times in queue but never got a live person via phone or 'live chat.' Switched to a Netgear Dual Band and it worked right out of the box and has had 100% consistent and fast connections w/in the home network and to the internet ever since.

Really A pretty good router
by towns54 on January 10, 2009
Pros: Very quick set up.Works very well.
Cons: Dual Band N.Much Better Range than G, and noticeably quicker in both wired and wireless connections.

Summary: So this is my 3rd router. Had 2 other Limksys before both G's.Wanted to get a newer model with N.Like to be anal with my research,so it took me a few weeks to finally decide.Picked this model because of the dual N , 256 Bit encryption(very important to me) and good solid response of people that had commented on it (Non-CENET) . If you buy this or any 256 bit security learn to set up full 256 encription.
Does come with a set up CD for quick set up.
I have a very a desktop 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 W/ / 3 GB Ram. Not the very best, but not Shabby.Also Have a Laptop Dual core 2 with 2.40 Ghz , 4 GB Ram.w/ Vista 64 Bit.
In my downloads with my Desktop wired i had a 50% increase in dowload speed, and the same wireless. This was my expectation, and the 160N has not given me any (zero) problems.
Recommend to any one that doesn't want to spend a bundle for the highly advertised junk. You will be surprised. I was.
I bought this from www.costcentral.com. for $68.20( new ) shipped. A very good deal ! -
Very poor router

The router has been difficult to keep connected to the internet. I have to reboot it every morning to either connect to the internet or to communicate with it. I'm taking it back and getting a differant brand. -

Summary: This is a piece of crap. I have been a customer and fan of Linksys for years. Until now, I would consider no other router. But they released this piece of crap that even they do not not understand how to keep connected.
This is the best piece of advice that anyone will ever give you about this router: READ THE FORUMS BEFORE YOU PURCHASE THIS. Read any forum, Read the LINKSYS forum.
After struggling with this router for a week, I am returning it to the retailer and I will never -- EVER -- purchase a Linksys product again. Years ago my first two routers (wired first, then wireless) were from SMC. Then they unveiled a piece of crap and lost me forever. Welcome to the club, Linksys. -
Good wireless range, install software questionable
by rrhnz1 on January 7, 2009
Pros: Once i got my laptop connected (took 3 trys the first time) I can move all over the house without any loss of signal. My house is a dead zone from most radio, cell phone and other electronic.
Cons: Very lite installation instruction, on line help manual is useless. Never have been able to find any information on what the button and LEDs on the front indicate,
Summary: Product was easy to install if you have any experience with routers. Just don't depend on the setup software to help in all cases. Took three times to get ...
Summary: Product was easy to install if you have any experience with routers. Just don't depend on the setup software to help in all cases. Took three times to get my laptop to connect wireless the first try. It has connected ever time since. Still having issues with strange drivers showing up on my PC that is hardwired, as usual with new equipment installations it will take a couple of weeks to eliminate all the things that the installation software installed that i don't need.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Cisco
- Part number: WRT160N
- Description: The Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology: Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable a double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band. To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N makes it ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance. With the Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games, and run media-intensive applications at incredible speeds, without the hassle of stringing wires!
