Summary: I bought this router back in July of '09 and had no problems until December. Suddenly, it will literally drop the connection about once or twice WEEKLY and that drives me insane! Beware if you have several devices networked! I have an Xbox360, PS3, iPhone, Wii and a laptop connected so when it drops I typically know it right away. I do a lot of video streaming with NetFlix and it is nerve racking when I can't get thru a stinking movie!

terrible connectivity -- keep getting kicked out
by kaj42 on February 13, 2010
Pros: easy enough to set up
Cons: doesn't work for its stated purpose once it is set up! Constantly kicks you off. The Linksys we had before (and bought about 6 years ago) worked much better!

Summary: Frustrating. I can't keep calling tech support every time, (which I did at least 7 times). They fixed the problem while on the phone but when I tried to connect to the Internet afterwards, I got that screen that said "Can't connect..."
I'm weary for being on the phone for hours the last two days and trying to fix the problem on my own. I shouldn't have problems every time I try to connect to Internet. Taking it back to store tomorrow.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

One of the worst products EVER!
by filcro on December 9, 2009
Pros: Not one thing!!
Cons: N Band is usless as the power output is so low. NAS devices get very slow speeds. Any try to use a N-bridge will fail. Spent over 5 hours with tech supports and they charge $10.00. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

Summary: This is one of the worst products I've ever been exposed to. The N band is so weak that any distance past 10ft from the router is useless. Spent ove 5 hours with Linksys on the phone with level 1-2 and then a manager above them and they can not get it to work on the N-Band. To top it off Linksys knows there are issues with this product and they charge $10.00 when you call knowing full well they CAN'T fix this defective product.
Do not bother with their wireless bridge if they tray and sell it to you as it's worthless. RUN AWAY from this product. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Bought this referb on 10/31/09. It took a month to finally solve the problem. It had firmware v2.0.02 build 011. It set up quite easily with the cd. Then it would constatly, randomly drop the connection to the internet. would get the Explorer error can't find the page. Sometimes hitting refresh multiple times would bring up the page. After much frustration and re-installs, I found an old post on a fourm that said downgrading the fimware to v 2.0.2 build 008 would fix the problem. My son, who bought an identical router, did this and it worked. I spent over 1hr on the phone with Linksys support. They had me change lots of settings and I thought it was fixed, but it wasn't. They even asked me what version of firmware I had, and I told them v2.0.02 build 011. Never fazed them. The SOLUTION was. Go to Linksys website and download v2.0.03 build 007 dated Jul 12 2009, and install it. No problems since. Router works fine, but Linksys support does not.

You will have to reset the WRT160N 2-3 times a day.
by jjhallway on December 3, 2009
Pros: NO PROS OVER ANY OTHER ROUTER OUT THERE. There is nothing good about this WRT160N router. DO NOT PURCHASE IT!
Cons: You will reset the WRT160N router 2-3 times a day. It is impossible to game with as well. On top of dropping your home network constantly, this router is also super sensitive to it's environment, unless you live in a cardboard box.
Summary: Do not purchase this. You will spend hours reading through tech support forums, and if you're brave enough to call Linksys they will treat you like an inexperienced computer ...
Summary: Do not purchase this. You will spend hours reading through tech support forums, and if you're brave enough to call Linksys they will treat you like an inexperienced computer user and waste your time updating the firmware, recycling your ISP modem, calling your ISP, etc. The problem is not those, but that the router is poorly designed and oversensitive to it's environment. Enjoy!

Wireless signal drops/requires power-cycling
by a_midlevel_user on November 24, 2009
Pros: The GUI is great and easy if you've ever used a linksys box before.
Cons: The wireless signal drops, and the SSID is virtually hidden until a power-cycle (fwiw, upgraded firmware and setting SSID to broadcast). if the signal doesn't drop, strength varies from 60 mbps to 1. Why upgrade to a less consistent product?
Summary: Not worth it yet - too soon for 802.11n, it would seem. Stick to the previous version that are B/G. A needless aggravation and a waste of time.

Wireless started dropping after one week!

Summary: This router was a big disappointment as I have owned a few Linksys products and have had little issue with them. But this one is the one that changes my mind about Linksys commitment to quality. For one thing after I started having issues I googled the problem and realized I was not alone with this issues. It appears the WRT160n is causing the same problem for many. Must be cheap hardware they are buying or as I surmise the power supplies are junk and fry the circuits. In any case I will not buy another Linksys router because their quality control appears to be less important then profits.

Summary: I've had several Linksys routers and network adapters without any real problems. Firmware updates and installation tweaks failed to resolve the constant drops and need for a reboot. Next time I'll check the Linksys forums before buying. Lots of posts with problems but few real solutions except avoid Build 2.0. Stay away from the 160N.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: Cisco
- Part number: WRT160N
- Description: The Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology: Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable a double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band. To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N makes it ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance. With the Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games, and run media-intensive applications at incredible speeds, without the hassle of stringing wires!
