Stability! This product is stable!

Pros: Stable, supports custom firmware, great range, no dropped connections
Cons: None so far
Summary: I replaced the terrible DLink DI-624 with this product, and am very impressed. The DI-624 would constantly drop connections randomly and did not give full-house coverage.

I bought this product and with no other changes I now have a perfectly stable network with no dropped connections or problems connecting to the router. I can now also connect reliably between wireless clients for file sharing - with the DLink product wireless clients couldn't even see each other. DLink blamed Windows for this, but after installing the WRT54GL, I can certainly say that it was not Windows but a faulty DLink router! (and bad DLink tech support).

Summary: I have been a loyal Dlink user for more than 5 years now. Recently, I moved and needed better range within my organization network. After trying Dlink DI-604 and Netgear's G54, and found both weren't any better with range, The linksys Installation was easy, and range is fantastic with 7dbi high gain anntena. I have tested it to at least 200 feet and have great signal. When upgraded to Tomato... You know what I mean... It was fantastic.... Real Time Bandwidth Monitoring with superb QoS and Firewall rules. A good deal at all...

Smokin' Fast if you flash with Tomato
by oscaroni on July 12, 2010
Pros: Easy set-up, fast out of the box, great wireless connectivity, easy to upgrade firmware.
Cons: No clear instructions for securing wireless. I didn't have time to flash it to flash it, and couldn't find instructions for setting up security. Of course a 3 second search of Google gave me the answer, but intuitive software would be nice.

Summary: II love this router with Tomato. It was easy to flash, yielding a very stable system. The new interface was great for port-forwarding, security, monitoring bandwidth, etc. I bought this after reading reviews for improving MagicJack and I ?m glad I did. No more landline. I have 3 PCs, a netbook, and PS3 and they all run fast and flawlessly. Two of the PCs are hardwired, but everything else is wireless. I stream PlayOn and all of the media on my PC (videos, music, photos) to my TV, and it is all instant - no buffering or delay. It probably helps that I have Roadrunner High-speed cable with PowerBoost, yielding at least 2.8-3.1 Mbps (really). However, I don't have brick or other solid walls like another reviewer, just standard drywall. If you want more convincing, go see the nearly 2500 5-star reviews at Newegg.

Rock Solid Hardware and Ultra-Stable Firmware
by j-a-lind on May 18, 2009
Pros: * Continued production of the WRT54G v4 with Linux Kernel firmware
* Solid performing hardware
* Ultra stable stock firmware
* Stock antennas can be removed and replaced with higher gain antennas
* Linux Kernel allows flashing with custom firmware
Cons: What's not to like . . . this is what Linksys should have continued making instead of moving to VxWorks O/S with v5 of the WRT54G. Only thing I've wished for is an 802.11n version of this box.

Summary: The "L" in WRT54GL = "Linux" as its firmware is Linux based. It is a continuation of the WRT54G v4 after Linksys changed to VxWorks based firmware for the WRT54G v5 (IMHO that was a mistake). Unfortunately one cannot find the "GL" in many brick/mortar stores, just the VxWorks "G" with firmware that isn't nearly as stable. Current stock firmware in the GL is extremely stable. Put one in my in-laws house a couple years ago running Linksys' stock firmware using WPA2-AES and it has never gone down or required a reset. The dual stock antennas give it decent range. This box along with v4 and earlier versions of the 54G have likely been the most used for custom firmware (at least until 802.11n became more popular). Ultimately had three of these running a "WDS" (distributed network) in my home flawlessly with custom firmware (Sveasoft's), also using WPA2-AES. Put the right firmware in these (current Linksys or a package like Sveasoft's Talisman Basic) and they simply keep running reliably day after day, week after week and month after month.

Summary: After about 1 year of use as my primary wlan router/access point, I began losing connectivity to my internal and external LAN and then even WLAN connectivity would cut out. I've updated the firmware to no avail. To correct the internet connectivity issues I've had to reset the unit and re enter the identical settings. To correct the loss of WLAN signal issue, I've had to go into the unit and toggle off/on/off/on the WLAN and finally it recovers and begins to transmit. I've also had some strange issues with the port forwarding where it will stop working and I have to delete the forward and re enter it to get it to work. I suspect a corrupt sector of the memory or some other hardware issue. Anyway... I've ordered another identical unit from NewEgg.com. Call me a fool but I really like Cisco and Linksys is a daughter company of them. Oh yea... if you think environmentals where an issue, its not. I keep this unit in a temp / humidity controlled lan closet. Also, If you think security is the issue, its not. I keep WPA PSK and MAC authentication at all times.

Summary: WRT54GL is the linksys router to buy, "L" standing for linux, the WRT54G (no "L")rev. 1 to 4, is the same as WRT54GL, WRT54G (no "L") rev. 5 to 8 seem to suck, so buy WRT54GL, there are only 2 ver. 1.0 and 1.1, on these babys u can install 3rd party firmware and and extra features to ur router. 3000sqft house, signal strenght is high throught house, my old dlink 624(constant reboots, went through 2 of them,and still reboots) had awful signal strenght in the same house, i have 4 wireless comps, 1 wired comp, and xbox wired and the linksys WRT54GL handles it great so far (had it for 3 days). im still with the original firmware. i didnt use the cd install method, i did it manually and it took me 10min, just remember to initially reboot ur modem to get an ip address for the router. dont understand the negative review for this router from one of users on cnet, maybe he got a clunker, but more likely he reviewd a linksys router w/ a different model number, eg, WRT54G rev. 5 to 8. hopes this helps in buying a router

I have not seen problems with distance as one other has reported. There is a lots of features which can be altered after via the WEB interface.
9 out of 10 is only to make sure Linksys will continue there development, for new and greater products

Summary: This is a legendary router, that has been popular for many years. One possible reason is the firmware, which is open-source and has been extensively studied and copied. It's a mature product that has been thoroughly shaken down. I have had absolutely no problem with it in the several years I've had it. I just bought another one as a gift.
I've never had the slightest problem with this router. It restarts itself after a power failure, and always establishes and maintains connections with computers and printers. Never a dropped connection, and I've never had to troubleshoot. Just leave it on and use it.
Wireless signal strength is fine. I get the maximum bars even through three (or four?) walls and 40 feet. My house isn't big enough to test the range.
Although there are many setup options (as with all routers), little or no setup is required to get started. Advanced setup is easy enough if you are technically oriented and read the brief but informative help documents. It has a Web interface. You just log on and start configuring. If you mess up and lock yourself out, you can just push a button to reset to factory options. Not sure, but I suspect a wired connection would usually work without any configuration.
If you are less technically inclined, you can set it for remote administration, and someone could help you remotely but change the password!!). I suppose you could try the setup CD, but it's not necessary. For highest security, I suggest disabling UPnP unless you need it (and remote administration).
This router is limited to 54 Mbps. That's fast enough for most home Internet connections, but some devices on your local area network might benefit from higher speed. These might include file sharing between computers, or a hard drive/file server with a network adapter. It's fast enough for anything I need, however. That's the only disadvantage I'm aware of.
I don't understand the few highly negative reviews. The symptoms that they describe do not seem normal. I suspect either a configuration error, a computer problem, or perhaps a defective unit.

Summary: This thing has won the newegg customer choice award 34 times for a reason. It's a rock solid router with a TON of functionality as long as you aren't afraid of installing a custom firmware on it. As with this particular line of Linksys routers, it's gonna last at least 3-4 years and you'll probably get tired of the wireless G standard before the router ever quits working. Highly recommended.
Updated on Aug 1, 2010
Just a small update, I'm still using this router with Tomato firmware. It has dropped me once in that time span and never required a reboot to this point. The power has gone out several times, but it needs no interference from me to get up and running automatically obviously. Still a great router, recommended highly.
