If you like Bit-torrent, Forget it! Horrible product
by modifiers on August 14, 2006

If you try to use bit-torrent client, it's basically impossible. The gateway crashes after a few minutes. If you do a search for sbg900 bit torrent, you'll find articles confirming this.
This gateway also has only 1 LAN port. So if you need more than one, than you are stuck adding another device anyway...
Assuming that on the bit-torrent case, it only crashes with the wireless, as one article I found suggested... if you are using a VoIP service, now you are stuck setting Port Forwarding through the gateway and through your VoIP device. A nightmare.
Anoter mistake: when you reach the firewall settings, if you apply a template, it erases any prior ports you had open. I finally had to take quite sometime, set the setting to high, and then open one by one ports for aim, msn, file transfer for msn, voice for msn, Tivo... it was a mission.
When you setup port forwarding, then you have to take an extra step and access the firewall setting as well.
Again, this is not a product for the novice user, and I do not recommend it. I cannot believe Motorola is not aware of the crashing issue, and they have not released any firmware upgrades to solve this problem.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Easy setup for the most part
by Redmachine on May 28, 2005
Pros: Charter Cable absolutely no issues, Physical setup took 3 minutes, Much better than Linksys WCG200, wireless now works on all my computers, MAC and WEP work
Cons: No automatic MAC detection, WEP screen not intuitive but both work just takes some adjusting.
Summary: Overall much better experience than with Linksys Cable modem which required registering the MAC with Charter over the phone. I was able to do so with Motorola just by using ...
Summary: Overall much better experience than with Linksys Cable modem which required registering the MAC with Charter over the phone. I was able to do so with Motorola just by using Charter pipline.
Had to hand configure both the MAC and WEP security that needs a Product Marketing look to make it more automatic and intuitive.
Much happier with downlaod time than before. Not perfect but for the price well worth the money.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Disaster, Failed < 1.2 yrs
by Ed Sisson on March 22, 2005
Pros: Easy setup
Cons: Failed with no warning, left without VOIP for 7 days.
Summary: Shouldn't have to pay 179 USD and have it fail in 14 months. Rent the cheapest solution from your provider and buy the BEST downstream hardware, not likely from ...

Beware..this is not a wirelss router!
Pros:
Cons: Despite what the box says, the unit will only support one wireless client at a time (regardless of security settings). Worked with Motorola Cust. Serv. for 2 hrs before rep stated " I guess at lunch I will read up on this product"

It IS a wireless router!!!
by N9oqt on October 26, 2008
Pros: I have had up to four wireless devices connected at the same time. It does only have one wired connection, but I have a switch hooked on that to allow multiple wired computers as well. Including a normal computer and a webserver.
Cons: Only one wired connection, it would have been nice if it had a couple of wired connections.
Summary: Great!!!

If you have VOIP, do NOT use this modem!

missing obvious features
Pros: does lots of things in one package
Cons: Misses obvious features for having a real LAN: --If upstream ISP is DHCP, then it won't allow you to specify a DNS server (e.g., on your own net) --It won't do NAT without insisting on doing DHCP, so you can't work around first problem by using different

Reletively Easy Solution for Wireless and Desktop
Pros: Hook up for desktop and wireless for laptop. Works great. Owned 1 month with very little problems or dropouts.
Cons: Clumsy internet interface for setup and difficult to set security options forcing me to use the no secure option. Still haven't tried to fix this one. My neighbors must be enjoying the free high speed access.
