Summary: My Frontier provided DSL modem went out over memorial day weekend so my only choice was to go buy a new modem at a retail store. Best Buy happened to have this one so I bought it. It was very easy to setup and works great so far, It has quite a few features considering the cost of the unit including QOS. If you need a gigabit network then this won't work for you but for the average home user it would be fine, most everyday users shouldn't need to pay extra for the gigabit. Overall another great product from Netgear.

Summary: I bought a refurb. unit for $20. Set-up took 5 min. I have had no issues with heat or signal loss. Speeds are faster than the Westell modem/Linksys b/g router it replaced. Signal strength seems about the same. Not as strong as I had hoped and the only reason it doesn't earn 5 stars.

Don't even consider this unit

Summary: Purchased this unit two weeks ago, as the newly-acquired 'smart' TV could "see" but not connect to my existing wireless network. TV tech said it might be my decade-old, Westel router.
Installation was straightforward and the TV and three laptops connected. The next day, nothing could, prompting the first of what would eventually become a dozen call to tech support in India. Though all were polite, apologizing profusely, only one or two were proficient in English.
The trouble was a different issue each day. One day, the router's transmit (Tx) function spontaneously turned itself off. Another call and after several hours, it worked. Sort of. Until the next day - and another, completely different problem. Now I'm not a noob to this: I've been around computers since '82 and set up several networks, bot wired and wireless.
The router/modem is simply unstable: fine one day, then :lost in space" the next. After multiple re-installations, re-configurations, firmware updates and numerous customer support calls, and trouble ticket escalations, the seventh or eighth tech suggested I return the bogus unit. Best Buy was great....
Router #2 was no better - and possibly worse - than the first. After a two hour call, the unit became functional, though not through the tech's on my efforts. It worked for three days, then NADA. Another lengthy call: apparently, only a download of a Beta version of the new firmware could fix it, but then the router went MIA yet again, so that was moot....
The clear 'solution' is to take the thing back...or never to have bought it in the first place.

Summary: I previously had a NETCOMM adsl 2+ modem/router. and while it did its job and was fairly stable. The factory reset switch was troublesome and firmware upgrades well lets just say it stuffed up my router and the factory reset isnt working.
Any router such as NETGEAR, BILLION etc which dont require you to switch off your internet security, firewall etc to update you firmware are a plus compared to the NETCOMM.

Summary: The sales person said this was the best one and the box said it could be used with my AT&T DSL and with MAC. It does come with a disk but the disk will not work in a MAC. The only thing it gives the MAC user is a PDF manual and you're left to try and set up yourself. Followed Instructions in manual. Could not get the modem to work so I called the tech support. I was a little leery of a modem that comes with a warning taped to it "Stop call tech support if you are having difficulties setting up. We want you to be able to use this modem." (Something to that effect). Tech support could not help me and claimed the one I purchased is defective (which I doubt because it did power up
and lite up as it should) and suggested I return it to the store. Avoid if you have a MAC, may work with PC but I have no experience. Poor Tech support also.

Perhaps a good unit but HORRIBLE customer support
by danrosenberg on January 7, 2011
Pros: The box was pretty.
Cons: The unit didn't work for me. I live in the country and apparently, the unit and my small town ISP don't get along. So I am willing to believe this is a good product. However, my experience with Netgear support was the worst I have ever had.
Summary: Test the product thoroughly before your store warranty expires. If it isn't working by that time, RETURN IT IMMEDIATELY FOR A REFUND? You don't want to have to ...

Summary: Test the product thoroughly before your store warranty expires. If it isn't working by that time, RETURN IT IMMEDIATELY FOR A REFUND? You don't want to have to deal with Netgear support and it will be too late to get your money back from the retailer.
I just read "Delivering Happiness" by Tony Hsieh - the story of Zappos. Netgear is doing the exact opposite in developing their customer support. It was like going back to the 1990s: endless phone trees, agents who are not well trained, who aren't allowed to do anything, promising call backs that never come, etc.
I had to settle for a third unit and to sell it on eBay to get back some of the money I spent on this product.
I strongly recommend avoiding Netgear. Oh, if you have had a frustrating experience and want higher level customer support here is the number: 408-890-3088
