Works for the most part.

Summary: Overall I have been pleased with the router, except that every time my cable modem renews my external IP, the router locks up. The only remedy for that was cycling the power. For $10 after rebate, I guess you can't expect it to be perfect.
I did come up with two workarounds for the power cycling.
1. If your connection drops and it locks up regularly (mine was about every 24 hours), you can put the router on a Christmas-light-type timer to auto-cycle power in the middle of the night.
2. If you're looking for a cheap switch, buy a crossover cable and sacrifice one of the wired ports to turn it into a $10 switch.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: We used this router in a small office (5 people) for 3 months and it worked GREAT. Three other routers were too flakey and this one WAS ROCK SOLID AND NEVER CRASHED, NEVER EVEN HICKUP'ED.
When we hooked it up to our cable modem at home, the cable modem actually started staying up for longer. Previously, windows would crash/freeze the cable modem when directly connected (probably MS-Windows trying to crash a Novell Product, as Bill Gates is Famous for doing ..)
The one problem is as follows. If my wife connects to a VPN through the router, I must power-cycle the router before I can connect to a VPN later that evening. She can meanwhile reconnect at any time with no troubles.
I would have given it 10 stars if they had fixed this problem, or at least if they had provided a remote-access feature to reboot the router.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Gradual decreased in operability. Had to uninstall software firewall. Can no longer use Yahoogroups, Yahoomail, cannot load files to resume sites, cannot pass photos to website, blah! Be aware that the router resets your modem making it difficult to uninstall unless you have weeks of time to kill. No support on the web, no FAQs, kindof inappropriate for consumer home networking...

NetGear MR814 v2 - couldn't live without it

Summary: Getting a router was the obvious alternative to tripping over the cable that connected my laptop to my desktop, but price is an issue when you don't have health insurance. A friend bought me this refurbished baby as a gift, and it's been priceless. With intermediate computer skills, I set it up quickly, and it's given me no troubles in the past year. My connection is great, and I can bring my laptop around the house if I choose - though, if I'm using my laptop, I'm generally in bed. (It may be stronger; I've noticed a few local IP attempts into my router since I got around to installing ZoneAlarm, which I read about in a CNET newsletter in January 2007.)
I use my computer for learning, for socializing, and for pretending I'm a writer (http://www.modified-news.com). My health - oh, if only it were as good as my intermediate computer skills! Anything that makes my computer experience more possible on pain flare-up days is a blessing, because my computer keeps me sane. The NetGear router does exactly what I want it to do, and even though it's not the latest or greatest, I don't need those for MY requirements. If you want to move around your laptop as I do, the Netgear router is a product I'd recommend.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: got this 11/21. i'm mildly technical, and found it's not too hard to install, although i needed support (waited 7 min and found them to be helpful and knowledgeable). excellent range in small NYC apt. biggest problem is with my 2.4ghz cordless phone - constantly have to change the channel so it won't interfere...has to be a better way. if you're using it with your firm laptop, beware you don't destroy network settings on the install...

Summary: Like some of the other reviewers, I'm new to wireless networking. I've got two desktops plugged into this puppy and a Dell laptop with NetGear's MA401 wireless pcmcia card in it. Two minor complaints, but very minor: it wreaks havoc on 2.4GB phones to the point where's you've have to relocate them at least 2 rooms away, and it doesn't seem to maintain my cable modem connection for email. Surfs fine, but I have to power it down then back up sometimes in order to get my emails to go out. Read in one of these reviews that this router cycles your cable modem. If that's the case, I didn't know it and probably would have avoided it. But the range has been terrific and it was a breeze to install. Guess it depends on your priorities. Gave NetGear's support a 6 'cause I've never spoken with 'em. It worked with XP Pro and that was about all I was concerned about.

Pros: Always reliable. Didn't have any problems with it.
Cons: Has normal range and I needed very long range signal because I am a rural house on an acer +. Otherwise no problem with it.

Netgear Customer Service

Summary: We are a business where we have a network in place already and are trying to set up a wireless network for the owner's and upper management's laptop accessibility in the store. We called Netgear customer service to see why it wasn't recognizing a the internet connection. The customer service representative spent 10 minutes trying to find out the information on the situation only to tell us that the warranty on the product was expired and because of that they could no longer offer telephone customer assistance for this product. I don't know if the product is a good one or not because I cannot get any technical support on connecting the router. The router may be fine but the customer service representatives are not helpful at all. Why offer a tech line if they are just going to tell the customer that they cannot help you set up the product. The customer service absolutely stinks. If you are looking for a wireless router do not buy their products.
