Overheats and drops connection

Pros: It worked for about 6 months

Summary: If you go to Netgear's own forum's (in their support section) you'll find that a lot of users have been complaining about these routers overheating and dropping their connections. The problem extends even up to the 624. Some owners have reported failures as early as day 1 of ownership. Solutions range from ripping open the case, adding heatsinks, to installing fans on the unit. Why go through all that bother?
Netgear's own techs are either clueless or refuse to acknowledge the probem. I've finally given up on it.15 out of 15 users found this user opinion helpful.

great router with one flaw
by vegas825 on June 30, 2005

Summary: The router was very easy to install. For a couple of minutes it wouldn't recognize my internet connection but I restarted the modem and everything was fine from there. Setting up WEP was very easy and configuring the router to my specfic setting (I needed to open ports) was much easier than a linksys. I can use my laptop anywhere in my house and the internet speed does not suffer. The only problem I discovered was that whenever the cordless phone was in use around my laptop or the router, the wireless signal would drop because of radio interference from the cordless phone. My cordless phone and router use the same frequency (2.4 Ghz) so it was sort of expected. If you are on a cordless phone a lot while using your wireless laptop DO NOT get this router or find a different frequency phone.

Summary: I bought this router 2 days back and still i m trying to figure out the way to set it up properly so that it doesnt drop connections . This router has a tendency to drop connections in 10 minutes(ISP dependent). As it doesnot renew its DHCP lease proprly.
I being a network engineer i have tried every thing from flushing arp caches to reboots to banging it.
Bottom line MONEY WASTED!!9 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I purchased this model from CompUSA. The internet light on the model came on only intermitently (sp?). I had to hire a computer specialist to come out and take a look at it...he said the unit was defective.
I called Netgear tech support. They determined it was defective. So you would think they would offer to replace the whole thing and send me a replacement router for free, right? Well...that's not what happened. Instead, I had to pay to send my router to Netgear. And they said they wouldn't ship me a new router...just a used router that was refurbished.
So they sold me a defective router which I wasted several hours trying to setup. In return, they wouldn't even give me a new router. Think I'll ever buy a Netgear product again?6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I purchased this from newegg.com, it only took 3 days to get and it was a standard delivery. I purchased it along with a WIRELESS USB bridge ADAPTR NETGEAR|WG111 (highly recomend)Simple easy setup as well... the total setup time took about 30 minutes, and thats because the first time around I neglected to disable my firewall.
It has been running flawlessly ever since (about 3 weeks)
Now... I work with websites which means Im uploading above avg. info .. still no problems.
This product is a great deal.. especially if you purchase it with a rebate.
Netgear is an old reliable name in the wireless router game.. go for it.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Tried to enable WEP and it worked with all but my Netgear wireless PCI card enabled computer. Once WEP was enabled my laptop with centrino and router wired computer were able to connect, but my main work computer in my office down the hall was unable to connect to the internet. Tech support was terrible and after 3 calls and at least 4 hours on the phone with various inept people, I still have no security features enabled... I'd like to find someone who knows what's wrong.

Summary: I tried setting my router up. I am relatively tech savvy, so i felt it shouldn't be a problem. Didn't work. I called my ISP (verizon) they told me to contact NetGear. The guy on the other end had very little clue what he was talking about. he would disappear for like 10 minutes at a time only to reappear and have me do the exact same thing he had me do before. I have a brand new sony vaio, so it really should not have been difficult to install. When it didn't work my tech support guy in India started getting irate with me, then put me on hold and never came back. So guess who's returning their router today? Yup, Me!
its probably a nice piece of machinery if you can get it to work4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

the router does not renew dhcp and loses wan. it doesn't effect everyone, but is really bad for those it does. this could be a good router if not for these problems.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I am very dissapointed with Netgear. I purchased this router when it first came out, and after a couple of years and 4 hardware revisions later, they have made this router worse.
I recently decided to get another WRG614, since I had such a great experience with my first one. The main reason for getting a new WGR614 was to use WPA, which was not working all that well in my first one because WPA was only implimented in a beta version of the firmware.
Much to my surprise, I found that the newer WGR614v5 had a 25% less signal strength compared to my original WGR614v1. Both routers were placed in the same location with the same settings. I also found that when I configured the newer WGR614v5 to use WPA, I started getting dropped connections.
Tech support via e-mail was no help at all. I am now researching other manufacturers.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: NetGear
- Part number: WGR614NA
- Description: NETGEAR's Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router lets you experience the blazing-fast network wireless speeds of 54 Mbps - up to five times faster than the popular 802.11b wireless network. These higher speeds make it a snap to web surf, download large files, videoconference, stream high-quality digital movies, MP3 music and photos and play online games. This wireless router also works with 802.11b wireless products so you can use it with your existing 802.11b devices and your new 54 Mbps (802.11g) devices. Auto-sensing chooses the fastest connections possible on your 10/100 Mbps wide area network and four local area network ports. True Firewall (SPI) advanced security provides maximum protection from professional hackers. URL blocking and e-mail alerts provide parents with controls to limit access to inappropriate web sites and monitor children's access. Simple to install, you just follow the cues shown on your PC screen and your router will be up and running in no time. Smart Wizard auto-detects and configures for the best ISP connection, while UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) makes it easy to use your computers, gaming consoles and other client devices - wireless and Ethernet - for gaming, instant messaging, and other applications. High speeds propel media-rich content across your network in no time. You can conveniently share your cable/DSL connection with many users on your network with or without wires. NETGEAR's Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router delivers 10/100 Mbps (auto-sensing) WAN and LAN connections and interoperability with 54 Mbps 802.11g) and 11 Mbps (802.11b) devices over a 2.4 GHz band wireless network. A true firewall secures your network against hackers: Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Denial of Service (Dos) attack prevention averts potential threats by scanning incoming traffic and Network Address translation (NAT) shields your networked devices from intruders. Powerful WEP encryption (40/64- or 128-bit) on the wireless LAN conceals your information from eavesdroppers. MAC Address Control prevents unauthorized access to your wireless network. VPN pass-through give secure Internet access to your office or corporate network. Parents are able to limit web access by blocking offensive content and URL addresses, and the router sends real-time email alerts and logs of all network web activity. Comprehensive anti-virus protection ensures safety for your networked computers. Smart Wizard simplifies setup - it automatically detects and configures your router for virtually all ISP connections. Install Assistant, NETGEAR's interactive tutorial, gives you simple prompts to guide you through each step of your installation. Applications that support UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) may be enabled to automatically interact with users over the Internet. Sleek design that comes with a vertical stand saves space.
