The good: Among the Netgear WNR834B's benefits are satisfying maximum throughput, a slick design, simple setup, comprehensive documentation, and tight security capabilities.
The bad: The Netgear WNR834B is one of the more expensive new Draft N routers around, and it takes a big speed hit in mixed-mode environments. Also, you can't adjust its antennas, since they're located inside the case.
The bottom line: Though its maximum throughput is solid and its speed at long range is respectable, the Netgear WNR834B's mixed-mode speed is not. Save your cash until more Draft N routers make it through CNET Labs.

Summary: As an I.T. professional let me say this was the biggest headache a router has ever given me! I have installed 5 other draft N routers (3 Belkin, 2 Linksys) with limited to no issues, but this beast ruined my evening. I simply could not get an HP notebook to connect to this router for more than 30 seconds! I also installed one draft N Netgear wireless PCI card which is the only wireless device to connect succesfully! I upgraded the firmware manually from the Netgear site and got the wired PC's and the one wireless desktop wtih a draft N PCI card up but the HP notebook (10 days old running broadcomm updated drivers) would not connect. (Note there was an existing 802.11G network that was working flawlessly) This is going back to where it came from first thing in the morning!

Installation cost me whole morning even if I am senior engineer of Sun Microsystems. First I connected both wired and wireless ports. I have a Sun server connected to internet and acting as a router. So I only use it for wireless. After disabling the DHCP, the wired ethernet can get the DHCP allocated IP while the wireless can't. But the wireless worked when I gave it a static IP. I have to call the support and they spent sometime trying to figure out the problem. By trying different combination of 'throughput speed' and security setting, I finally got it working. But when I try to change little things such as password, it becomes limbo again.
When it is working, I also have a compatible N adapter by Netgear. At exactly the same office downstairs, the signal barely make it to the range and the speed hovered between 33 to 70. Switch back to D-link, the signal is much better.
