Worst router I've ever owned.
by manahyard on August 5, 2010
Pros: It was pretty cheap
Cons: Wifi speed is slow, drops wifi connection, pretty poor range, can't update firmware for some reason, doesn't work with PS3 in wifi encryption.
Summary: I've had nothing but problems with this router. I stream movies over the wired network and sometimes I can barely get 100mb from the rate 1gbps link. I constantly ...
Summary: I've had nothing but problems with this router. I stream movies over the wired network and sometimes I can barely get 100mb from the rate 1gbps link. I constantly have to reboot the router, wifi doesn't work with the ps3 when using encryption, I can't update the firmware, freezes up constantly, and all around sucks. Avoid this router like the plague.

Very stable, fast, inexpensive!

Pros: Stable connection, Gigabit ports. Streams Netflix flawlessly. Strong signal in two bedroom apartment.

Summary: The Trendnet Gigbit Router was purchased through Amazon for $73.00. Very Cheap! The Router has never lost a connection and surfing the net wirelessly is fast and easy. Currently my Blu-Ray streams Netflix via the Router and its Gigabit port. The quality is smooth and excellent. Setting up the Trendnet router however is a bit tricky. Very little documentation comes with it. If you have a dynamic "DHCP" or "automatic" IP address, like 90% of use do, you need to switch the WPS switch on the back to off! Then it can configure itself automatically by cloning the IP, and then switch it back to on to go wireless.

Serious connectivity and DHCP issues
by BenLF on September 24, 2009
Pros: easy to set up
Cons: Often will not assign IP address (Wireless or LAN). Can't block domains by name, only by IP address

Summary: I've had weekly issues with this router not assigning valid IP addresses (both wireless and wired). It came to a head when multiple router power cycles and laptop resets would not get me connected. Plugged my old D-LINK back in and I was on in 30 seconds.

A very good router at a cheap price (79 $CDN). Great !
by HoulaHoup on August 17, 2009
Pros: Installed with a Belkin High Performance N1 Wireless Desktop Card (F5D8001tt), TEW-639GR gives me a «solid» and regular connection at 300Mbps. No drops have been recorded, even if there is many networks close to my place on the same channel.
Cons: Router TEW-639GR has been tricky to install and to tune on my cable modem. It could benefit from a user friendly installation software.

I have owned and used a lot of networking equipment, and for me this is the worst one ever. It seemed to work fine at first, but the moment I started using Skype with video, withing 20 seconds it would completely kill the internet speed. Even QoS wouldn't help that.
I updated to the newest software, and it works even worse now. As long as I stay in the same room, withing 10ft, it's fine. If I move further away or to another room, it will say I have full wireless connectivity, but I loose connection to the internet. Switching to B/G only helps a little, untill our A/C turns on, and everything is lost again. -
For hard-wired w/wireless use can't do better for $
by Enbuenora on April 13, 2011
Pros: Very fast for hard-wired networking. Much stronger wireless signal throughout house than standard routers like my prior. Recommended it to friends, it improved their networks.
Cons: No serious cons yet. When applying any change to the router's setup, it applies each change individually and if necessary restarts, rather than waiting for one 'apply' choice. Firmware updates are crucial since recent ones solve serious issues, and prod

Summary: Huge improvement in my hardwired feeds throughout house from a standard 10/100 router. Everything is faster, even though max speed of internet connection is around 20 mbps. Especially helps when accessing home network & transferring files. Wireless signal far stronger and faster than my prior wireless router for the same price. It's easy to configure, so upon my recommendation a relative purchased it, and it solved both an issue in which making a VOIP call at the same time as some larger download (we assume that's what fixed it), and his ability to access a wireless signal throughout the house. We each had mainstream wireless routers of different brands before.

Summary: 7 months ago I purchased this. After a few hours online traffic between WAN and LAN stops. Can go straight to cable modem and no problem. Got RMA replacement from trendnet.....few hours later same issue. Changed firmware several times. Same issue. Tried several different reset combinations same problem. This router is definitely garbage. Have used Meru, Juniper, Cisco, 3com, Dlink, Zyxel and linksys wireless systems and have installed these all over the country....this router is by far the worse I have ever seen. Last trendnet product I ever buy or recommend to a customer.

A decent gigabit router for home/SOHO use.
by GL-IT on November 7, 2010
Pros: a) router with n.draft and gigabit switch
b) under $70
c) Stable running firmware 2.0.0.50 on v2.0R of this router.
d) Easy install and easy access to the web interface to configure necessary settings.Cons: One thing it lacks is a basic content filter, which many routers in this price range have.

Summary: I've deployed seven TrendNet WAPs (TEW-638APB) at my work and once firmware was upgraded to the current version they've been solid performers. Because of this I decided to bring TrendNet into my home and I've had nothing but pleasant experience with it. Let's face it, after dealing with IT issues all day, the last thing I want is to play help-desk at home too.
First off - this is NOT an advanced router so to compare the feature set of this router to advanced routers is like complaining that the Pontiac Vibe lacks the advanced features available on the Porsche Cayenne.
USB connectivity would be nice to have but I wouldn't consider it a must have for this router. This is more of a standard wireless router with a nice feature set, not a router+data sharing+print sharing device. There are cheaper routers that have a USB port on them, so it certainly wouldn't hurt to have this feature on this router. Then again, considering how many wireless and ethernet equipped devices are available out there, USB ports on routers will become more of a throw-away feature.
Overall, no complaints about TrendNet signal strengths. In real world situations, this is what counts - how the device performs in my home or my office. The fact that the signal reaches X number of feet is great, however if the signal can't penetrate through my walls and floors, then it's useless. I've tracked my WiFi signal through my two story house and performance is solid through 2 floors top to bottom and diagonally across the house between floors.I've seen the same thing at work where I pick up the 1st floor WAP through 4 floors at 60-70% signal at about a 50 degree angle from the source (which means it's cutting through 3 concrete floors and multiple walls to get there).
To address the guest wireless issue pointed out by Mr. Ngo:
Guest Wireless is there, kind of. You can set up 4 wireless network SSIDs, each with its own security settings so you don't have to share your personal wireless password with guests. No advanced access control features are included but at least you can partition your WiFi access at a high level. If this will be used in a Home/SOHO situation, most users will not require a granular access control feature.
The router doesn't have web filtering/content filtering capabilities. Decent content filters can cost thousands, plus subscription fees, so I wouldn't expect a $50-70 router to include this for free. That said, some other routers do have at least a basic filter feature where you have to manually enter all the exceptions, one by one. This one, as Mr. Ngo pointed out, only allows you to block ports as per user-defined time periods. This is a bit odd to me considering that the average user wouldn't know what ports to block and even if they did, most users (I would think) want to block websites or content types, not ports. Why not switch this option for a more standard URL block/allow filtering baffles me somewhat.
A possibility would be to wait for the folks at dd-wrt to port their custom firmware to this particular TrendNet model. Many newer routers actually advertise that they support dd-wrt, including over 10 models on sale at a large online computer retailer that advertises on CNET. Buffalo, Linksys, ASUS, and Netgear all have routers that support DD-WRT and market them as such. For more info on this firmware, Google DD-WRT.
In summary - a great router with gigabit capabilities and high speed wireless. Could use some tweaking on the firmware to support basic content filtering, but otherwise it does as advertised. -
