Virgin Mobile's price is good, bandwidth is inadequate
by realtronics on February 5, 2011
Pros: VERY PORTABLE and very easy to use. Drop it in your front shirt pocket and you are a walking hot-spot. Auto-shutoff feature is nice. Very adequate for checking emails, updating social websites, checking stocks, news sites, etc...
Cons: The fact that Sprint restricts bandwidth on Virgin Mobile's prepaid products limits their service to basic web use. It is not fast enough to support VoIP (like Skype, Google Voice, etc...). Viewing news videos is very choppy.

Summary: I purchased the product so I could use my iPod as a portable cell phone. I've been doing so successfully on Alltel's network & wanted something smaller than the mobile router that I use in my car. That's where Virgin Mobile's service failed. The bandwidth simply doesn't support VoIP. I used the product for basic web-browsing on the iPad and it's adequate, but not great. Again, it's an issue of speed. If you are just looking for VERY INEXPENSIVE internet service on the go and you can tolerate dial-up speeds, this product is great. If not, it's probably best to go with one of the regular contract plans offered by AT&T, Verizon, etc...
If you want to give it a try on the cheap, head to Best Buy - they offer a 30 day return policy. When you sign up for Virgin Mobile's prepaid service, grab the $10 plan for 10 days. You'll find out right away if it's fast enough for your needs. If it's not, keep the product long enough to run out your prepaid service & return it. If you don't like it, you're only out ten bucks. Do not purchase the $40 plan on your first use. I found out within minutes of firing up my hotspot that their service wouldn't satisfy my need for mobile VoIP and I'm glad that I only pre-paid for a $10/10 day plan.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

The device is cheap & service is good for most part.

Summary: Since I work from home and am out & about getting new customers this device is wonderful because of the ease of use and flexibility. When I first started working from home, my business team told me about the USB MC760 and after I did some research about it I purchased that online immediately! I purchased that back in December of 2010 so I thankfully was Grandfathered into the $40/month 5GB throttling to 256kbps. I bought the Mifi 2200 in November of 2011 because I went to a business conference with my team and forgot my USB at my hotel but thankfully someone had the Mifi with them and allowed me to connect to it. That thing was faster than the USB and it even had the max of 5 people on it! They had the extended battery on it and told me it lasts a little more than 8 hours straight.
When I got back to my hotel room I immediately ordered the Mifi 2200 from Virgin's site and got the 1 day shipping. It was at my house before I even got home from the airport! I now use it daily when I advertise/get new customers at the mall and other types of places. I connect my laptop and my iPad 2nd generation up to it and stream a video on my iPad to show people about my business. I did purchase an extended battery online and I've had that run a max of 10 hours 30 minutes straight before dying...that beats the standard battery! It does make the Mifi bulky but if you keep it in your computer bag or something it's no big deal.
Overall: Fabulous device, extended battery is definitely worth it if you use it on a daily basis during the day and coverage is good for the most part...just make sure you check coverage before going on a trip. -
Never gets 3g! Even in full evdo area.
by Oshuaj79 on April 19, 2012
Pros: It looks pretty?

Summary: I'm in a "FOR SURE" Sprint EVDO 3g area, not just an area shaded on the map and I get nothing over 118kbps max (after 10 speed tests in a few different locations). I do pay for the $50 unlimited 3g up to 2.5gb (then throttled back) plan. It is bull that they mislead people into thinking they will get 3g only if you purchase the $50 plan when its no faster than the $10 and $20 plan speeds. I got the $50 plan just to be on the safe side because I wanted to use it with google voice to make phone calls on the go (only uses 1.2mb "PER MINUTE"), but I might as well have gotten the $10 plan because at these speeds there's no way I could accomplish this. I didn't expect it to reach the normal 1-1.5mbps 3g speeds, but I thought maybe it would do at least 500kbps which would suffice my needs. I was wrong. Point being if you want to use this piece of crap, don't expect to be able to do anything that any "real" service provider's mobile hotspot will do. It's fine for checking your email though. Big woop!

A Total Waste of time. One star rating is too kind.
by SoAZcowgirl on April 18, 2012
Pros: The promises Virgin makes are extremely attractive. The Walmat exclusive deal of 1Gb/$20 sounds wonderful (but you spend >$50 more for device than you would pay for same unit on Amazon.) I was looking to use this to replace a $21/month dialup plan.
Cons: Can't activate it. Software instructs you to use links that do not exist. Repeated data entry process 12X. Third call, tech support had me push paper clip into bottom of device but little interest in waiting for result. Now no password is accepted.
Summary: Promises, shmommises. Only result is time & $20 Top up $$ wasted that I can't get back.

Ripoff. Never works. Wastes a lot of time.
by Suffiesuffie on March 15, 2012
Pros: It is great when it works and I love the idea of pay as you go. You can skip months at will and with no penalties or other such bs.
Cons: Drops connection more often than it is connected. I spend more time trying to connect than actually using it, and I don't use it much at all.

Summary: I like the idea of this device and if it stayed connected when you actually need it I would give it 5 stars but as it is the service is terrible and it never works. EVERY single time I use it the connection drops and it takes a while to reconnect. Very unreliable.

Pros: Portability, and can use with multiple computers at once.
NO CONTRACT.Cons: SooooooooooooooooooSlowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
It's like dial up modem.
Drops signals frequently.

Summary: I've had this since Nov 2010, and the service has declined. I use this as my home internet, and it is incredibly inconsistent. I never reach the maximum usage, but find my speeds very slow for about a week before my month is up. I can't watch any youtube videos or stream things like netflicks or hulu. I paid $150 for the unit at BB and pay $40 month for service. I am considering another option at this time.

Difficult to activate; unreliable.
by Julie_San_Jose on February 4, 2012
Pros: Great concept: no contract.
Cons: 1. No instructions.
2. Best Buy swapped out first one because it couldn't be activated.
3. Best Buy had trouble activating 2nd one.
4. Website referred to wasn't active.
5. Activation took 20 min with Tech. Support.
6. Can't turn mine off.Summary: Wish I had read reviews before buying it. I wouldn't do it again. Had trouble getting a signal for several hours -- walked around the block, drove around several ...
Summary: Wish I had read reviews before buying it. I wouldn't do it again. Had trouble getting a signal for several hours -- walked around the block, drove around several blocks. Finally got a signal. It seems to be working now. But it won't shut off, so I keep it plugged in and charging overnight. Tech Support is annoying; they repeat every word you say; heavy accents; I got transferred 3 times and never was the info passed on to the next agent so I had to repeat acct number, pin, problem, etc. every time. I escalated to a supervisor, and my first complaint was that agents repeated every word at which point she said "So agents repeat everyword." Accccccccckkkkkkkkk!! While on hold, music is supposed to be hip, I guess, but is annoying to anyone over 25.

Works for me when I need it.
by greengrass99 on January 20, 2012
Pros: Connects fast to my Apple devices when needed. Since many places have free WiFi I just got this as a back up in case I need to send to text, make a call (use VoIP calling) or connect MBAir. This one is prepaid which is an advantage.
Cons: Not long battery life, but charges quickly.
Summary: I just got this as a back up for on the road use. I would not use it at home, tho. I use high speed DSL. Works fine with iPod ...
Summary: I just got this as a back up for on the road use. I would not use it at home, tho. I use high speed DSL. Works fine with iPod Touch, iPad and MB Air as needed. Like that it is prepaid and just buy a card when needed. Can also buy a card online. Very convenient.

Stuck with a useless piece of crap
by trackarch on September 5, 2011
Pros: Cheap plans
Cons: 1. Device itself works half the time only - problem can be fixed by resetting it (by logging in and clicking through 5 screens, takes about 5 minutes each time);
2. Frequent system-wide service outtage - this has happened so often that I could not use theSummary: Cheap but too good to be true - I'm stuck with a piece of crap that is useless.
