Delphi Roady XT (XM) price range: $189.99

The good: Tiny plug-and-play XM Satellite Radio receiver; includes car kit; seven eye-popping display colors; FM-transmitter feature broadcasts to nearby FM radios.
The bad: No recording/rewind buffer; you have to pay an extra $50 for the home-install kit.
The bottom line: The world's smallest plug-and-play XM satellite radio may be the most affordable route to satellite radio at home.
Sirius Satellite Radio has Howard Stern, but XM's resident shock jocks, Opie and Anthony, are awfully funny and equally uncensored. (XM used to charge extra for Opie and Anthony, but the show is now free.) XM is continuously adding channels, which at last count numbered 160, including 65 commercial-free music stations. The programming choices on XM have grown more adventurous lately, and XM's music channels tend to have less DJ chatter and fewer interruptions than Sirius's.
As we mentioned earlier, the Delphi Roady XT is incredibly tiny. It measures just 3.7 inches wide, 2.25 inches high, and 0.615 inch deep, and weighs 2.8 ounces. You can choose from seven dazzling backlit colors for the large display that dominates the front panel. The front panel squeezes in useful controls, including 10 buttons for direct access to XM's channels; you can store up to 30 presets. The Roady XT comes with a car installation kit; for home use, you'll need the Delphi SA10176 Roady XT Home Kit ($50), which includes everything you need to hook up the Roady XT to an A/V receiver or any other audio system with line-in jacks or an FM radio. We had the Roady XT up and running in a matter of minutes. The miniremote is easy to use, even for clumsy-fingered listeners like us.
The Delphi Roady XT's built-in FM transmitter can broadcast XM channels to any nearby FM radio within 15 or 20 feet. That's a nice feature, especially for cars, but at-home FM fidelity can't match that of a Roady XT wired hookup.
The Delphi Roady XT's sound quality isn't up to CD or even FM-radio standards, but in terms of stereo separation and clarity of treble detail, it was a little better than that of the Sirius SR-H550 home unit we had on hand. As tested in Brooklyn, New York, XM reception was dropout-free and dead quiet, without the background hiss that always accompanies FM radio.
XM Radio listeners can choose from a wide range of audio products, including dedicated home units such as the magnificent Polk Audio XRt12, XM-ready home-audio components such as the Denon AVR-3806, and a forthcoming line of MP3/XM portables such as the Pioneer Inno. But the Roady XT is a great choice if you need the flexible transportability of a plug-and-play XM satellite radio--one subscription, multiple listening venues--at a very affordable price.

VERY VERSATILE, AMAZING DESIGN, GREAT PRICE
by steviebb2 on December 8, 2005
Pros: This unit has everything: Sexy slim design, Multi color display, great reception, Home or Car use, Easy to install
Cons: No recording ability or internal battery for "true" Portability, Can't display channel, Artist and Song (only 2 at a time) , no way to silence beep for artist/song memory

Summary: This unit is truly amazing not to mention a great bargain. I got mine through the World Series game 1 offer for FREE (only catch is 12 month service agreement). I didn't even have to pay activation fee since I am a current subscriber, just switched radio IDs. This thing has great display with numerous color options. Reception is great at home, in the car, and at work. The set up took all of about 5 minutes which included hiding all the wires in the trim of my car and behind the floor trim at home. The favorite artist/song feature is great but limited to 20 entries. This option really made the XM service much more enjoyable since I hear more music I like. The remote is slim and sexy just like the head unit. Easy to use and not cluttered, but provides great control. The sports and stock tickers are great if you are a day trader or sports nut.
There are only three true complaints that can be made: 1) This unit does not have recording ability to make it truly "portable" so you can use it when you don't have reception. 2) Can't be used unless plugged into a base i.e. no internal battery or plugs are all on base) 3) No way to silence the beep that comes up for favorite song/artist option. This plays in because I like to listen to jazz when I sleep, not a good feature for it to beep loudly every so often.
I rated it a 9 out of 10 because you can't beat the price, especially if you get it for under $40 bucks. Be sure to get the remote and the home kit if you really want to enjoy your subscription. I even have a home kit at work!!! Sad that I spent so much on the Home kits. haha. I even set up my car steering wheel controls to control the unit via a special unit behind the dash. I got mine here: http://www.pfyc.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PFYC&Product_Code=GN8002&Product_Count=9&Category_Code=GPOTHER I think it will work with other cars besides grand prixs as well. Talk about a nice feature and easy to install for any semi-techy. (PAC SWI-X Steering Wheel Audio Control Interface) Mine is set up to control both the aftermarket head unit and the XM unit!!!
Overall this is a great unit at a great price if you shop around!!!!8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cons:
I have had to invest a lot of money in this free little gadget. $55.00 for a home kit and $120.00 to get it installed. The wireless FM transmitter sounds horrible. There was always some feed back noise no matter which number I had it set on. This is why I had to get it hardwired in. My husband also had this problem but, his feed back noise was not as much.
I do really enjoy the music and the stations. I hope my money that I have spent on it pays off in the long run.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great XM radio with lots of features at an affordable price

Summary: I am new to satellite radio, so I did not know what to expect, but after purchasing the Roady XT I am very impressed. I was expecting the setup to take a while, but literally it was a matter of plugging the unit in, setting the FM frequency and it was up and running. Activation through the XM web site was quick and easy to follow.
While the directions state not to put the antenna on the dash and to mount it on the outside of the car, I found that not to be the case. I put a strip of Velcro on my dash and on the bottom of the antenna and I get perfect 3 bar reception. I have friends who have tried this with other radios and it did not work as well as it does with my Roady XT.
I would recommend the home kit for this radio. The home kit antenna is very effective. I was worried at first because the instructions stated I needed to place it in a south facing window and in my office my window faces the west. I was happy to say when I plugged in the antenna and faced it out the window I got three bar reception. I did experiment by placing the antenna in the middle of the room to see if it would work without a widow to direct it out of. In my testing this did not work and a window view is needed.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great step-up from Roady 2

Summary: I purchased the Roady XT for my car and moved my existing Roady 2 into my wife's car. I ordered online, so did not even try it hands-on, but I have not been at all disappointed. Although the buttons can be small if you have big fingers, the XT is much easier to navigate while driving, since it doesn't use the jog dial. The backlighting is better at night, and it's nice that they have a "jump" and "search" button on the unit rather than just on the remote. Since I have my MP3 player running through the line-in on my head unit, I run the XT through its on-board FM modulator, which plays at every FM frequency so it's easy to find the right channel if you're driving across country. Sound quality through the FM modulator is very good, but please don't think it's going to be CD quality. To my ear, it's better than FM quality, but it's probably because there's no static issues; you either receive it or you don't. If you've been happy with your Roady 2 and aren't sure if the step up to the XT is worth it, trust me; it is.

Unfortunately, I wanted this to be the primary player in my car. I had it professionally installed (which means the antenna). I don't think there is a problem with receiving reception from the satellites, but the problem comes from the FM transmitter. If possible, have it connect directly to your car stereo deck, do not rely on the FM transmitter. Using the FM transmitter, the sound quality is worse than local radio stations - lots of static, in and out performance.
I'll keep the player and the service, but need to find a better way to receive reception from the FM transmitter.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: While I really did like this unit, I had enough problems with it to really jade me. I loved how it was light and portable. It makes several trips back and forth between the car and home, with audio quality being excellent. However, within the first month of owning it, the internal battery and memory failed, not allowing me to store my favorites or recall channels with favorite artists.
I learned to deal with this and just had to channel surf like I had to do on my FM dial, and did so until my subscription ran out.
This is an excellent, affordable option if you are first trying out XM, but if you like XM after your trial period, you may want to upgrade your receiver, and customer service can offer great deals on that. -
