Xact XTR1 Sirius satellite plug-and-play receiver price range: $2.61 - $4.19

Upside: The wide variety of XRT1-compatible products makes it possible to listen to Sirius's programming at home, in the car, and on the go. The S-Seek searching capability should make it easy to find the content you want, and the wireless remote should make it convenient to get there. In addition, the XRT1 (with the battery pack) is about $150 cheaper than XM's competing MyFi.
Downside: The compatible battery pack makes the XRT1 pretty bulky and allows only 3 hours of listening time--considerably less than the 5 hours the MyFi offers. The XRT1 also lacks some of the advanced features of the MyFi, such as the TiVo-like abilities to record satellite radio, display sport scores, and be used as an alarm clock. And although the XRT1 is cheaper than the MyFi, it requires one of the add-on packages to work and lacks the MyFi's extensive array of included accessories.
Outlook: Compared to the Delphi XM MyFi, the XRT1 just doesn't stack up. Even the lower price evaporates if you need to purchase separate accessories to listen in multiple environments; by contrast, the MyFi includes home and car kits, as well as an integrated rechargeable battery. If you like Sirius's programming and don't need the advanced functionality of the MyFi, the XRT1 could be a good way to get a bare-bones portable satellite radio at a reduced cost. But we're betting that Sirius will have a better portable option by the time Howard hits the airwaves in 2006. In the meantime, check out CNET's satellite radio guide to learn more about XM and Sirius.

DO NOT BUY XACT PRODUCTS

Summary: This unit downright sucks. No other way to put it. When I first got it the display went black within 2 days.It got so hot that I couldn't even touch it. I got the boombox too which is useless indoors. The CD player broke within the first month. I called tech support, after sitting on the phone for 1/2 hour I got totaly inept tech support who told me to send it back and I would get it back in 3 weeks. 3 weeks turned into 6. They failed to tell me to send in all the required pieces and didn't contact me to let me know. I had to call them to find out what was going on and they convienently didn't have a record of me calling in the first place. No supervisors were ever available to help. I asked to have one call back 5 times to no reply. I finally e-mailed them and got a response, telling me that they were sending my equipment back, which took another week and a half, they didn't send it for a week after telling me they were shipping. After calling to find out what was going on, they wouldn't give me an answer on when it would ship. I finally got a reply after e-mailing them again and calling them idiots. Seems they have time to reply to that but not anything else. I went back and forth with them for 4 e-mails from some sarcastic idiot, I was amazed at the response I got from them after not getting anything out of anybody about the status of my shipment. Seems they have the time to fight with you through unsigned e-mails but don't have the time to actually help you. Finally got the replacement unit back and I find myself driving in my car staring at an "aquiring signal" display for 10 miles at a time. I find it hard to believe that the satelite signal is that bad because I know people with sirius who have no problems with getting a signal. Xact sucks and I will never buy anything with their name on it again. Now I have to go through the hell of calling customer support to find out why I get no signal. I'm sure I will get no help again and they'll tell me to ship it back. I'm calling the retailer where I bought it and seeing if it can be returned. I REPEAT DON"T BUY THIS PRODUCT OR ANY XACT PRODUCTS.

I took this piece of crap back to the dealer and luckily found a Sirius Sportster. I highly recommend this unit. I never lose reception and the FM transmitter kicks ass. I bought the home docking station and can tune Sirius into any radio in the house, very cool.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: 2 thumbs down in a death spiral. It operates way too hot. The auto mount is a goofy plug click screw operation. Using preset buttons only slightly faster than scrolling through categories and channels. The one year prepaid subscription is non-transferable to a replacement unit. I'm VERY HAPPY I did not bite on the lifetime subscription offer. I have the boombox option and don't like it, poor sound, AM FM tuner weak CD functions too hard to find for my primitive brain. Xact is the brand X others compare themselves to.

Sirius rocks!
by wowkiter on May 31, 2005
Pros: Compact size. Easy to move from car to home. Clear reception using built-in FM transmitter.
Cons: Membrane-style buttons on unit and small buttons on remote hard to use without looking at keypad. Wish there were more station pre-sets.

Summary: Got this for Christmas. It's been on for over 8 hours each day, almost every day since it was activated. Does run hot, but not unbearably so (nor as hot as the Kenwood H2A receiver). Sound quality is exactly as advertised -- CD quality all the way, both when wired directly into my stereo at home and when using the FM transmitter with the stock radio in my Saturn L300.
This unit is small enough to make transferring it from the home docking station to my car a breeze.
My biggest complaints are the membrane-style buttons on the unit and the teenie-tiny buttons on the remote. Neither are very tactile-only usage friendly. I also wish there were more pre-sets.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice unit, easy to install , love the programming...

Summary: I just purchased this Unit at Sam's club, it came as a package with the car mounting unit, and the boom box. I was able to get it working in no time on the boom box/home kit, but had to mess around with the antenna placement until I got a pretty consistant signal...Since I live in an apartment I had only a few area's where I could locate the antenna outside, and this can really make a difference depending on where you place it. The car kit was very easy to install, although I wish the mounting bracket made it easier to quickly take the receiver in and out of the mounting bracket...they need to come up with a better "quick release" system. Once installed in my car, and after selecting a radio station frequency that was not being used in my area, the unit transmits the signal right over your existing FM radio...worked great. I'm already hooked on Sirius Satellite Radio, and will probably never listen to commercial radio again.

Sirius beats XM
Pros: Great! Installed Car Kit's antenna in 5 minutes, connected the wires and had CD quality audio through the Alpine receiver and Bose speakers of my 2002 Benz. Liked it so much I bought a 2nd Xact Xrt1 and home kit: Now I Jam at home all night long (sounds b
Cons: Mount that comes with Car Kit is cheap. Decided to mount unit using a gooseneck from a mobile phone kit from radio shack.

Summary: The XTR1, in my opinion, is poorly engineered. Apparently, it has a history of going bad in a short period of time. Specifically, it goes into a non-stop booting cycle and never fully powers up. Now, I don't believe for a moment that Xact is not aware of this. However, they will give you the run-around when you contact them. They will not back their lousy product. Xact is a cut and run business that will leave you hanging with their junk electronics. Now I have two cradles and and boombox that are worthless. I contacted Xact, but they would not make it right. It is my belief that when most if not all of a product go bad, the warranty should be out the window. Nothing said, "works great for one year" when I purchased it. Trust me, buy someone else's product. You'll be happy you did!! M

Summary: I would give this a 0 rating if that were a choice. I first bought the plug & play w/ boom box and car kit in apr05. by Jul05 the receiver stopped working. I sent it back to XACT and they replaced it without any problems. Now, just under a year later the recevier again stopped working. Now they are telling me my warranty was for the 1st faulty unit, which expired in apr06 and I would have to pay for a new one. I do not know what to do since I bought a 2nd boom box and have invested way too much money on this junk, otherwise I would switch to another brand. Am I going to have to buy a new unit every year? I also have lifetime subscribtion to sirius and I am praying I can transfer my account. BUYER BEWARE!! I agree with most other reviewers. This company sells JUNK. Do not throw your money away!!!
