Awesome Device! Great Price! No Wires on your dash.
by Delmarco on December 31, 2005
Pros: No Wires, Great Sound, No clutter!
Cons: Small Remote!
Summary: Just got it for X-mas. My girlfriend hates that i love Howard Stern, but she knew Sirius and Howard was the only thing I wanted for X-mas.
She initially got ...Summary: Just got it for X-mas. My girlfriend hates that i love Howard Stern, but she knew Sirius and Howard was the only thing I wanted for X-mas.
She initially got me the Siruis Sportser Replay ($170 for unit). And that unit was big, ugly (the blue backlight is gross)and came with so much wires and clutter that it looked like an octopus on my dash after we set it up. After a few minutes I could not bear to have it in my smallish 3 series BMW sedan. NOTE: if you have the spaciousness of a SUV cabin then the enormous Replay may suit you.
Anyway I wanted a more portable device with minimal wire clutter and a screen/backlight that was not too gaudy and bright.
The Xact Visor for only $40 was a far better replacement. Bestbuy charged me $40 to hard wire the antenna and power cord cables behind my dash so I have no wire clutter at all. And the visor sits snug on my windshield at the drivers side A-pillar (to the left of the steering wheel). The orange backlight is very clear and matches my BMW's orange dash...so that effect is also cool.
POSITIVES: Easy to use, cheap and quick to set up in your car, it is both low priced and good quality-something that has become a rarity in the electronics business. Easy to unclip from stand and take inside your house or lock away in glovebox. The small size is a big plus. The Sporter Replay could not even fit in my glovebox and that was a negative. This is important and something a consumer is not going to realize until he/she is setting the unit up in the car and realize that there are already DVD/GPS units, Radar detectors, iPods, cellphones, cupholders, air fresheners and a bunch of other in car gadgets sharing the cigarette lighter, dash space and glove box space. The visor literally saves you from sacrificing anymore space. For me that was MOST important. Sound quality thru the FM transmitter was way clearer than the FM stations themselves. It comes thru clear and loud with NO static. I mean absolutely NO static. I previously had an iPod hooked up with an iTrip FM transmitter and the sound quality was horribly low and full of static. This is unlike that. All other positives can pretty much be extended to the Sirius programming that must be experienced to really get a sense of how amazing satellite radio is.
CONS:
Like every in car remote control I've ever seen and used, the visor's remote is no exception in being small, dark, plagued with low profile buttons and impossible to for the driver to use safely whiles driving. Even passengers at night will find the dark, small buttons hard to see. My advice is leave it in the backseat. The unit is much easier for the driver to use without the remote. Another Con is not inherent to the device but has to do with the Law in certain states that prohibits radar detector. Two days with the visor and everyone who has seen it my car has asked me "When and why did I get a radar detector?" It looks exactly like one. Buyers of the Visor should get ready to explain to the Highway Patrol all about satellite radio and how you got the Visor because someone gave it a great cNet review.
A final con is the homekit; it is hard to find and pricey ($50.00...which is more than the cost of the unit). The homekit basically consist of another antenna, a 12v AC adaptor and an extra stand for the Visor, also audio cable plugs are included.
I found that a trip down to the Radioshack allowed me to get the AC plug for $5.00 the audio cables for $4.00 and I bought the Xact brand general sirius home antenna for $10.00.
BOTTOM LINE: There is no bottomline; get this device now!8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great receiver to get you in the door

Summary: The Visor is the best Sirius receiver out right now for anyone curious about satellite radio and on a budget. I didn’t want to invest too much in Satellite radio because I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But for the price of a dinner for two in NYC, it’s been well worth it. The XTR3CK Visor is a snap to install anywhere in your vehicle or home. In fact there’s really no complicated installation involved. You either clip-it to your vehicles visor; suction it to a metal/plastic area or do a hardware install. It also includes a built-in FM transmitter to wirelessly rebroadcast to any nearby FM radio. I’m currently rebroadcast Sirius stations to 88.1FM in NYC with outstanding results and quality. I also purchased the Home Kit, which comes with… Docking Cradle, Antenna, Power adaptor and Swivel Base for the antenna.
The only downside to this receiver (and almost any satellite receiver) is the cable clutter. I ran and concealed the antenna wire successfully on my Hyundai Tucson up through to the dashboard with no problem. The only cable clutter left was the power adapter running to the cigarette lighter, which bothered me because I also needed the cigarette lighter adaptor for other uses, but I lucked out since my truck has multiple power outlets. I just cut and extended the XTR3CK Visor’s power adaptor with 22-gauge wire and ran it from the back power supply along the same path as the antenna wire. This freed-up my front power outlet and eliminated the cable clutter making me extremely happy with my purchase. There are no recording or MP3 capabilities on this unit and you can’t really expect it with such a low price tag. The remote controls infrared is kind off week also but I don’t see myself ever using it.
Can’t wait for Howard Stern to hit the air…5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

AM quality for $13 bucks a month
by ajheyl on January 9, 2006

The sound quality of the built in automotive stereos is superior to any after-market unit I have heard. Some stations sound better than others and some music channels are so poor in quality that they are better off unheard.
The unit REQUIRES an FM modulator for automotive use if you are going to get reception of any value. Depending on your vehicle can cost upwards of an additional $90 in cables and adapters. The built in FM trnsmitter is lousy in the automotive application.
Overall summary. Disappointing sound quality for a sattelite receiver. Clever gadget for entry level in this market and it can help you avoid paying for a second subscription (after spending $50 on the home kit).3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have had this unit for 2 years, I move it from 2 different vehicles, the garage the house, and to work...daily. I have dropped it, kicked it, lent it out, left it outside overnight more than once. It has never let me down. It is basic, with no features like the more expensive models, but it has been abused and has been perfect. If you are looking for a good unit and do not need the bells and whistles...this unit is for you!!! reception is great, parked it outside the house before I got the home kit, and listened to it on my home stereo from 25 feet away!!! 2 other friends have this unit, and have had the same experience as me, buying another one for christmas..

Great featureless player for less than $50
by Satradancing on January 14, 2006

Summary: This is my 3rd Sirius plug and play receiver with my other 2 being the big bulky Audiovox PNP2 and the first Xact Jockey Streamer. And this is by far the better player of those 3 and I was able to grab the Visor for $29.99 at Best Buys on Jan 7th of 06.
No doubt this player is a featureless one and only comes with the ability to preset 30 channels which is more than enough. It does lack song and artist seek that Sirius offers with other players as well as a 44 minute buffer recording replay. The fm transmittor is very strong for this player and I get at least fm SQ if not better. It comes with fm frequency options including the 87.x ranges.
I got mine hardwired from a Best Buy guy on the side so the only wires showing are a few inches of the power cord and antenna going from dash to player. Almost anyone can find a suitable install place as this player is very versatile in that area. Mine is which arms reach and I love using the rotary dial on the side for quick station changes.
This player comes with a credit card remote that looks like it came from outerspace. Works very well as long as you have it pointed to the remote eye which is the piece sticking up near the back of player.
You can choose a scrolling screen of artist and song OR chose one or the other where no scrolling occurs. Overall I am super pleased with this little player and give it a 9 out of 10 rating based on price and what little features it offers. Well worth it!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

For me, a good entry-level satellite radio.

Summary: I purchased this radio on ebay at a very cheap price just to see if satellite radio was for me. Installation was pretty simple for me because all I had to do was plug in the power cord, antenna and since I have a cassette player in my vehicle, the cassette adapter. I placed the antenna on the dash and has never lost a signal while driving. The remote is so-so. You can't see the buttons when it's dark. My next receiver will definitely have more that a one-line scrolling display. It is just too hard to read while driving. I also purchased a home kit. It plays great through my stereo, but the signal seems to change daily. What I mean is the signal is strong all day if I place the antenna on the window sill. The next day, I can't get a signal there at all and have to relocate the antenna more in the middle of the room. The next day, I may have to relocate the antenna someplace else. This could be due to fact that Sirius satellites are moving. But for the money I invested and the sound that I am getting, I couldn't be more happier.

Summary: Target has these for $28.99 unfortunately the Home Kit with the wall socket adapter is still at $48.99 which is ridiculous just to use it outside your car. You do get what you pay for and I've had mine for a year with no problems. Reception is an issue but it's not the receivers fault it's the technology so no matter how much you spend you may get spotty reception under bridges, trees, near mountains...etc

the unit was fine for the first 6 months. then it would work for periods of 10 min or so and lose reception (acquiring signal). also the power connection was very loose and i had to mount it such that it wouldn't fall out constantly (though that may have just been the unit I had)...
the good:
it was cheap and provided an entrance for me into the satellite radio world. i enjoyed the flexibility for mounting the unit.
final recommendation:
listen to the free trial online to see if you'll enjoy satellite radio then buy a unit other than the xact visor. -

Summary: Worked fine for several months before being unable to play more than 10 minutes. Customer service agreed the radio was defective since it behaved the same way when moved to the other car or house antenna and they instructed to return the radio unit and they would send a replacement radio. Six weeks since the first phone call... letter came that said they couldn't help me until I paid an additional $21 or UPS all the bits and pieces it came with also. And then a replacement wouldn't be available for at least 4 more weeks. Made another call to the help line maze and they said it didn't matter what the last person told me, they can't help until I take down the antenna, suction cup... and UPS those also. Can't recommend buying an XACT radio.
