Excellent for scanning docs, but damages photos
by Newt Havens on December 14, 2009
Pros: Compact unit. Quick single or double-sided scans (single pass for double-sided). Lots of options for resolution, searable .pdf and .jpg. ScanSnap Organizer software allows for organizing by folder and additional tagging.
Cons: Editor's Review incorrect; can set to save photos as .jpg. However, correct aboout lines in scans and worse, it DAMAGES photos - they are permanently scored by the feeder mechanism (scoring now picked up by flatbed scanner). UNACCEPTABLE FOR PHOTOS.

Summary: Get this for documents; it is small, convenient, and comes with some useful software. Do not get this for photos - it damages the photos. For documents I give it 5 stars; for photos I give it 0 stars. Since I purchased it for documents, I am giving it 4 stars overall. The scanner quickly folds and unfolds (and still in a pretty small footprint) making it easy to accommodate on your desk. Note: comes with a full copy of Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard.

Summary: I have been looking for a product to electronically archive all my paper documents painlessly for over a decade. Now that is possible with the S1500 ScanSnap. The scanner is fast and starts scanning with a touch of a button. The included software makes the task of converting to PDF (Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard) and saving into a file organization application (ScanSnap Organizer) as simple as can be. I cannot think of a time when both hardware and software work so flawlessly. This product is simple to use and works as intended without any headaches. The best part of electronically archiving with the S1500 is that the included software contains an OCR program that can turn your scanned documents into searchable PDF, so you can use Acrobat 9 to find the exact content you are looking for. You will not regret owning one.

fast, clever, useful, and ok with pictures
by michaeld55 on February 7, 2010
Pros: changes documents to many formats stored in recognizable icons, converts paper documents to pictures to size them, for a newsletter, converts a paper document to a searchable document to look for a word, great price for the software
Cons: occasionally stopped working, generally fixed with restart (close and open it) does much more than I can easily understand that might be explained in a visual "how to". would like a simple way to also connect to Mac. fine price with software

Very Impressed
by KurgerBurger on April 3, 2010
Pros: Very fast, full color, duplex, wide range of software for manipulating images after scan. Inserted your original upside down? No problem, you can flip it before saving.
Cons: The business card software is not as flexible as CardScan's but the fact that it is even there was a pleasant surprise. All the OCR reader will capture is name, company, phone and email, but can export into Outlook.

Summary: We are trying to go paperless, I own a business and get tons of crap that I need to keep around but the filing never stays caught up, so bought this product as an experiment. We are very surprised at the flexibility of the software- most negative scanner reviews seem to focus on the software. The unit very quickly scans docs, processing takes a little while though. Color resolution is not perfect but good enough for business. The bizcard software (OCR) only captures the name, phone, company and email and will export to Outlook, but if you need the address, fax and other info captured you should look at a bizcard scanner such as CardScan. I haven't done a lot of OCR testing yet but so far OCR accuracy appears to be around 90-95%, so you will have to clean up a bit. Overall this unit is very nice for the price.

Best new technology I bought in 2010
by MrsAdamSmith on February 1, 2011
Pros: I scanned about 300 pictures of four different sizes. Could do about 15 at a time. No problem. Jammed once, but easy quick release button. No damage. OCR great transfering old typed manuscript to Word. Minor problem with format transference.
Cons: Nothing. Have told several friends how delighted I am with it. Urged Office Max to carry it. Would have bought one at least a year ago if I had known about them. I'm 73 and no tech wizard. Managed to set up and use product with no help.
Summary: Terrific product. They need to advertise more.

Summary: What should be a good scanner turns out to be a useless doorstop. I cannot find another company that is producing scanners without TWAIN drivers. Fujitsu claims that having TWAIN drivers would make the device more complicated and harder to use. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Every TWAIN scanner I've ever used (almost all scanners are TWAIN compliant)have seemlessly integrated with my existing software simply by selecting the correct TWAIN driver from a dropdown list of installed scanners. Snapscan does not appear in the list. This scanner is strictly standalone, which I wouldn't mind except that Fujitsu was being disingenuous in their advertising. Had I been looking for this problem, I might have seen a mention that the device was not TWAIN compatible but I never evey considered that they wouild leave it out. It's an industry standard. Marketing to a demographic that wants a simple product at a good price is good business. Hiding the truth in the fine print is not. Shame on Fujitsu, and double shame on CNET for reviewing several of the Snapscan scanners and never mentioning the lack of TWAIN drivers.

Summary: I read a good review about this scanner on www.lawyerist.com, bought it right away (because lawyerist.com is a pretty reliable web site) and was able to scan well for about 1/2 hour.
All of a sudden I received a Windows message saying that ScanSnap Manager has stopped working. I went through the troubleshooting guide that came with the scanner but was not able to resolve my problem. Uninstalled, then installed again, same message. Then tried to contact their customer support line, it said that they are off on Sat. Then called them on Sunday, they were off on Sunday. Then called on Monday, they were off because it was Presidents Day. I tried to locate a resolution of the problem by researching Fujitsu's database but wasn't able to find anything related to my problem.
I am pretty upset. If they are making money selling this scanner on weekends and holidays, they should either have tech support available or provide a better troubleshooting guide. Fujitsu should know that most people use this scanner for business purposes and very often time is of the essence. I wasted one whole day trying to connect it and then ended up scanning with my old Brother all in one machine. Brother does have customer support on the weekends but I have also been able to find answers to all my problems in Brother's troubleshooting guide. If Brother had a scanner of this sort I wouldn't hesitate to return Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 and buy a Brother product. -

- Description: The ScanSnap S1500 provides Windows users an effective way to greatly reduce paper clutter, storage space, and security risk associated with unmanaged paperwork at home or office. Even better, documents scanned by ScanSnap take on a higher level of accessibility and usefulness once liberated into the digital realm. Organizing with the ScanSnap S1500 happens at the touch of a single button. All this intelligent technology working behind the scenes ensures your PDF or JPEG files look their best automatically. There's speed and then there's speed with quality. The ScanSnap S1500 has been engineered to deliver even faster performance with up to 20 pages per minute in color, grayscale, or black and white; however, S1500 remains just as fast when scanning at a higher resolution of 200 and even 300 dpi color or grayscale. ScanSnap S1500 has several automatic features to help ensure scans look their best without operator intervention before or after they scan. ScanSnap S1500 is now equipped with an ultrasonic multi-feed detection sensor that can be turned on to help operators avoid losing images. What's more, an interactive interface allows users to easily and quickly bypass intentional double-feeds such as a taped-receipt on an expense report.
