Worst HP product I have ever purchased
by lrrp6 on July 14, 2006
Pros: None that I have been able to discover
Cons: Extremely difficult installation, software that is extremely time consuming to use, constant errors codes

Summary: After 3 days of installation problems, the scanner began working. After about 3 scans, the machine began giving error code 23. The only solution is to unplug the unit, after 15 seconds plug it in again and try again. Usually this happens 3 to 5 times. Then the machine will begin working. My latest attempt was to scan a 6 page document in black and white at 300dpi. It took 19 minutes to get the scan completed.

Not Well Built
Pros: Auto reversing document feeder
Cons: First unit errored out of the box. HP offered to send a remanufactured replacement. The store replaced it with another new unit. One week later the second unit failed with the same lamp error. Additionally, the HP scanning software is primitive.

GREAT SCANNER AND ADF FOR MODERATE USE
by hoganj051 on March 17, 2011
Pros: Simple to use, basic scanner with a higher resolution, auto document feeder and duplexing feature.
Cons: I have not noted any negatives. Like any hardware, you must keep your PC maintained to insure maximum operation. Install errors can occur if you have other scanners, all in one's installed. Best to remove old software to avoid these conflicts..
Summary: Just like any new hardware, once you get used to the operation and the software options you have "smooth" operation. The cost is very low for the features offered and ...
Summary: Just like any new hardware, once you get used to the operation and the software options you have "smooth" operation. The cost is very low for the features offered and even lower as it is an older model. I had looked at the hp newer, but the resolutions had been cut down on those and the prices seemed astronomical for me.

Works great as a 35mm slide scanner
by johnnpatty on October 25, 2010
Pros: Downloaded software - large file. Worked immediately. Scans are good. General document scanning works satisfactory. Have not tried negative film.
Cons: Software loaded OK on first try, but took about two hours. large footprint. Takes about 5 minutes to scan 3 transparencies with avg. 2.3 mb files.
Summary: I like HP build quality. This scanner has a lot of features and the downloaded software is quite complete. It worked just fine out of the box after a two ...
Summary: I like HP build quality. This scanner has a lot of features and the downloaded software is quite complete. It worked just fine out of the box after a two hour installation. Needed twain for slide scanning, but it does the job and a bit of touch up in photo software generates a decent photograph. My experience is following directions generally results in favorable results. If you want a decent office/home general purpose scanner it is worth a look.

Anchors aweigh!
by safulop on August 23, 2010
Pros: It won't punch you in the face after you swear at it for not working.
Cons: After trying Windows and Linux, it has yet to make it through more than three pages without hanging up and dying with an error from the scanner. It is going to our recycling program as scrap.
Summary: It is worth more as a boat anchor or conversation piece on the coffee table, than as a scanner. It doesn't actually scan anything beyond one or two pages, ...
Summary: It is worth more as a boat anchor or conversation piece on the coffee table, than as a scanner. It doesn't actually scan anything beyond one or two pages, and sometimes crashes on the first page.

lucky if you can get 1 scan out of it before it crashes
by Richard_Artes on August 25, 2009
Pros: not much...
Cons: software is terrible. It can only do 1 thing at a time; and constantly crashes. Reboot computer does no good until you reset the scanner also. why do software companys think the more features they add, the better the software? I just want to scan.

Highly functional though fiddly to get to grips with
by glenjiglenji on May 22, 2009
Pros: I was skeptical initially, having read some negative reviews, especially regarding the automatic paper feeder. I've been pleasantly surprised. The paper feeds fine and I've been busy saving a load of teaching materials to PDF format.
Cons: It doesn't really work straight out the box. The software interface is fiddly and takes a little while to work out. Changes various setting takes a bit of trial and error, but once you have it fine tuned to what you want it works fine.
Summary: On the whole I've been very pleased with this scanner, if you are willing to invest a bit of time initially then you'll be rewarded with a scanner ...

Pretty good WHEN it works.
by margaretjb on March 12, 2009
Pros: As long as the paper is in good shape, the sheet feeder is wonderful.
Cons: I've been battling Error 23 ever since I got the scanner. Unplugging it and plugging it in again seems to be the solution, but often it takes doing this multiple times to get it working. When paper get jammed in the feeder it's not easy to get out.

Summary: Its only saving grace has been that once it started working during a scanning session, it continued fine until the next time I booted it up. I have scanned the pages from about nine 3-inch notebooks, something I would never have attempted without the sheet feeder.
Lately it has gotten much worse, and I am not sure it will ever work again. I have had it about 15 months, but I only used it once every 3 weeks or so on average. The software is slow and not particularly impressive, though much improved over what came with my Scanjet 3400 in 2003.
Both times when I bought an HP scanner, it was because the scanner seemed like a good price for the use I intended. However, my frustrations with both scanners have led me to vow never to purchase an HP scanner again. The waste of my time has not been worth what I paid.
