2009 Audi Q5 price range: $37,200.00

The good: With the Drive Select option, the 2009 Audi Q5 is one of the best-handling SUVs we've driven. Maps in the navigation system look very good, with many 3D-rendered buildings. The Bang & Olufsen audio system delivers excellent musical reproduction.
The bad: Inputting destinations can be tedious with the MMI controller.
The bottom line: The 2009 Audi Q5, in Prestige trim, offers some of the best tech of any small SUV, along with incredible road performance.

From a Lexus biggot..
by ryork272 on September 26, 2009
Pros: Handling - quite impressive!
Comfort
Ride quality
Quietness of cabin
Giddyup - merging onto highwaysCons: I'm a techno kind of guy and the MMI needs one enhancement that will greatly improve ease of use.

Summary: I have owned 5 Lexus vehicles. I have not bought anything but Lexus for the past 10 - 12 years. The 3 year lease on my Lexus GX470 SUV is up and I wanted an smaller SUV with better fuel consumption. My kids are older now (14 and 17) so I do not need all the room of the GX470 (which by the way is a GREAT vehicle).
After 4 months of use, here is my update.
So I was going to purchase a Lexus RX350. But its kind of ugly and a bit feminine looking. Lexus let me take it home and use it over night for a day. Nice, but fell short in many areas and, incredibly, my wife did not like it. Huge front dashboard with very little wood trim. Looked kind of cheap for a Lexus and the ride was a bit soft, which is not necessarily bad but I thought it made the handling somewhat sloppy. In short, I expected more especially for a $47k vehicle.
So I took several competing brands for test drives. When I drove the Q5 I just about pee'd my pants. I wanted it right there and then and I had never driven an Audi at any time in my 49 years of being. The handling seemed to be a perfect blend of ride comfort and great handling. The upgraded Band & Olufsen stereo system is worth the $800. The nav system blew away Lexus. The seats are very comfortable and front, side and rear vision is excellent. It also has a rear camera, similar to my GX470, except that the Audi lets you know if you have clearance when backing out in tight spots. Done deal!
My main complaint is the MMI interface is unnecessarily complicated. I can tell it will take a while to master it. My advice to Audi: the dial in the middle is nice but, since its not a touch screen, include a joy stick to move around on the screen - especially for the navigation app. The dial allows you to zoom in or out but how do you then hover over a spot on the screen and click it to "go to" that location? Its the one thing Lexus had that Audi should have included.
Updated on Feb 28, 2010
The MMI system continues to be frustrating to use. It simply does not remember your settings after the vehicle is turned off. The nav system is next to worthless. Its directions can be waaaaaay off. I use my portable instead.
It needs a touch screen!!!! I am constantly looking down to see which button to press, taking my eyes off the road. My biggest worry is that I will get pulled over because the cop will think I'm drunk.
The ignition key is a boat anchor. Its too big.
Indeed this is a very comfortable car/SUV. Great interior and beautiful ride. The B&O sound system is excellent. I get a lot of compliments. After 4 months of use, I truly appreciate the build quality and solid feel.
Now fix the nav system and MMI !!!
Updated on Mar 20, 2010One more update. Made it through the tough Cleveland winter and I have to say it handles well in the snow. Almost as good as the Lexus GX470 (I leased 2 of them for 6 years). I am very impressed.
I get a lot of compliments on the interior. I opted for the cinnamin colored seats with black interior.
When they replace the current MMi system with a touch screen, it will be close to perfect.
I really like this car/SUV and would buy it again.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

This SUV has no competition
by rjhagner on August 27, 2009
Pros: Unique styling, incredible driving performance especially steering and acceleration, 4400 lb tow capacity, MMI screen graphics, Extremely comfortable seats seem to envelope the driver
Cons: MMI navigation interface takes some getting used to, a bit daunting to the techno-challenged

Summary: Before buying a 2010 Q5 I test drove the volvo XC60, Lexus RX350, BMW X3, MB MLK and Acura RDX. None came close to the driving performance of the Q5. My Q5 does not have the Drive Select package the CNET editors drove but it is hard for me to believe it could be much better than what I am experiencing.
I also was sooo tired of seeing the same old body styles that this market segment has been stuck on for many years. This car has been a real head-turner!
The interior and exterior fit and finish could not be better.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best of the small SUVs
by tiborttt on August 24, 2009
Pros: Good acceleration with decent fuel economy.
Terrific handling (unlike "Still Misses", I've driven this vehicle)
Beautiful interior, and tight modern exterior.
Panorama sunroof and great 3D navigation.Cons: I honestly found no fault when comparing apples to apples; meaning other SUVs
Summary: This is a good-looking SUV that's not too big, so it accomodates a couple or a small family. Has a strong motor that has actual towing ability. Surprisingly good ...
Summary: This is a good-looking SUV that's not too big, so it accomodates a couple or a small family. Has a strong motor that has actual towing ability. Surprisingly good handling; you can really throw it around and it remains under control. It is as quiet as a luxury sedan and has a very tasteful and comfortable interior.
It is good enough that my wife wants one as her next vehicle, when her 335ic lease is up.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

BMW X3 + Lexus Rx = Audi Q5. consider the 2.0t motor.
by somonster on September 21, 2010
Pros: for the 2.0t engine:
couple of grand cheaper!
lighter engine = better handling / balance, i feel less "push" in aggressive cornering
peak torque early in the rev band (mfg states 1500, feels right on)
better gas mileageCons: MMI takes a while to get used to (but then gets fairly easy)
"rotary phone" data entry method is JUNK JUNK JUNK
price - wow. add options with care.
no more free maintenance - now they charge $800 for a five-year oil-change and inspection plan.Summary: I was all set to pull the trigger on the 6-cylinder, but they had a 4cylinder turbo on the lot so I took it for a spin - thank goodness ...
Summary: I was all set to pull the trigger on the 6-cylinder, but they had a 4cylinder turbo on the lot so I took it for a spin - thank goodness I did.
MOTOR: torque with the turbocharged motor is higher and peaks sooner without being "thrashy" or harsh. the VW/audi 2.0t engine is really impressive. The engine is lighter, and to ME it makes the car feel much less nose-heavy and more nimble.
It really seems crazy spending upwards of 50 large on a 4 cylinder SUV, but if you're in the market and can suspend the snob-factor for a moment, consider the smaller engine. It may not haul heavy payloads as effortlessly as the 3.2 6-cyl, but for shuffling the wife and some groceries around the 2.0 turbo 4-cyl is more than adequate.
INTERIOR: interior quality is SOLID, good attention to detail (e.g. even the spare tire well is carpeted)
as fancy as you wanna be (air-conditioned seats, fancy stereo, reclining rear seats, etc...).
electronics take too many button pushes. MMI is OK, can be a little frustrating to learn - just remember the "back" key that's not always represented on the screen. The triple-zone AC controls are not the most intuitive and require a combination of button-pushes and dial-turning, so I just leave it set to Auto even if the fan gets noisy sometimes.
cargo area is a little narrow, a case of form over function.
EXTERIOR:
styling is understated modern, classy but a little plain. I especially like the dual scalloped lines that run from the headlights down each side - that saves it for me.
DRIVING: a nice blend between Lexus luxury smoothness and BMW sporty agility.
sight lines are fairly clear, but I wish there was a larger rear window.
side mirrors are HUGE and partially obstruct the view out the front corners (esp for shorter people like my 5'-1" wife)
much less steering and handling feedback than the pre-2011 X3, more insulated from road textures. Smooth but not floaty. I'd prefer a little more feedback through the steering wheel esp in turns, but I never feel "numb" or unsafe at the controls.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

The most amazing SUV I have ever driven!
by PdxTRK on December 1, 2009
Pros: You will not find a finer small SUV on the market. It seems to do everything well. It is powerful, beautiful, comfortable, sporty and refined. I plan on purchasing one in the near future. I drive a 2003 A4 and the Q5 makes it look like a buggy.
Cons: The only con I have is that they do not have a diesel option, but I understand that is coming.

Summary: I recently had my Audi A4 in for some major engine repairs (which Audi covered for free even though it is no longer under warranty) and they gave me a Q5 as a loaner car for a week. WOW, I never dreamed a small SUV could be that nice. Plenty of power, great stereo, almost drives like a sports car and is extremely comfortable. I was going to upgrade to the A6 later this year, but I have changed my mind and plan to purchase a Q5. The styling is superb, it is extremely quite and very comfortable. It did take me most of the week to fully learn the controls as they are complicated, but after you get comfortable with them you realize just how useful they really are.

Great Mini SUV
by rklein27 on August 13, 2009
Pros: The scale of the auto is perfect for people that have trouble entering and leaving oversized vehicles or even standard sedans or lower sport models. One simply slides onto the hip-high seat and prepares for take-off.
Cons: There are better transmissions available such as the dual clutch transmissions already on several Audi models.
Summary: It is not a sports car nor is it a full size SUV. However, for those who don't already have one or the other, this is a great compromise. ...
Summary: It is not a sports car nor is it a full size SUV. However, for those who don't already have one or the other, this is a great compromise. It is well appointed with a choice of trim and stitched leather seats and a really decent audio system. Moreover, the cabin is very quiet when driving, unlike several competitors in its class. It ultimately would benefit from the new transmissions that shift so effortlessly and efficiently that fuel economy instantly is 10% better or even diesel engine choices that Audi makes for its home country that have great low speed torque and fuel economy without any of the noise and smoke issues that plagued the older models.

Q5 2011 - Great Car
by MrRugger on July 8, 2011
Pros: Love the drive, the 2.0T engine is very smooth and the turbo pushes you back into your seats (not bad for a heavy car). Lot's of interior space for it's category, ride comfort, love the pana-roof (biggest in the business) and it is smooth, smooth, smoo
Cons: I hate the voice command for the bluetooth. It understands me only half the time, and doesn't seem to hear my 'shotgun' passenger too well. But it makes for some hilarious conversations when my wife has to yell at her mom to be heard. But this ann

Best all round CUV; taut sports car-like handling
by mastervizion on October 8, 2009
Pros: panoramic roof;
tight handling (even without Drive Select); S-line wheels + Yoko hi-performance Yoko Parada all-season 20s;
understated Audi interior;
LED front/rear lights;
B&O system;Cons: so-so seats (not anywhere close to Volvo standard) ex V70R driver..; de-contented from Euro-version to keep premium = B&O + S-line price down around C$52K..;
gas mileage (likely until engine broken in); only fair @ 15L/100kms (Cda.);Summary: Gas mileage - needs engine to be broken in longer than usual as hi0compression 12.5:1 & puling 1880 kgs.; have to watchthe right foot..;since it likes to ...
Summary: Gas mileage - needs engine to be broken in longer than usual as hi0compression 12.5:1 & puling 1880 kgs.; have to watchthe right foot..;since it likes to be driven hard.;
Seats - should be optional upgrade within S-line package as A5/S5 etc.have way better seats; these more akin to VW Touareg & not up to Audi std. ; i.e. premium/S-line seats only mildly tweeked from base model & too flat..;
raer seats in partiocular are too benchlike & thinly padded/formed with dinky armrest..;
All somewhat understandable as focus is on performance & overall build quality which is superb; seats took the hit on cost-savings..; Euro versions cost Euros 40-60 loaded; UK even worse; so we in NAm. get decent deals @ US40-50K; C$45-60K; my C$50K final deal before tax is quite amazing versus spartan X3; GLK; (especially) less so LX350; RDX; MDX; LR3; etc.;1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
