2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco price range: $18,425.00
- Reviewed by: Wayne Cunningham
- Reviewed on: 05/26/2011
The good: With a manual transmission and turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco gets 42 mpg on the highway. A large radio display works well for browsing music libraries, and the OnStar smartphone app has remote features.
The bad: The Bluetooth phone system lacks advanced features and the audio system delivers mediocre music reproduction. Onboard navigation is not available.
The bottom line: The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco comes off as a bit light on cabin tech, but its high mileage and good driving character make it a practical choice.

Amazing Car!

Pros: Great interior and overall quality. Very very quiet. I achieved 42 MPG on a 3 hour road trip.
Cons: It could have a little more power.

Summary: I have owned this car since November 2011. So far, I have logged 9,000 miles. I've had a lot of time to really get to know this car. Chevy has a created a winner. I have read the majority of "professional reviews" from magazines like Consumer Reports and Road & Track. I find them to be very inaccurate. Not uncommon for someone who has only driven the car for a weekend. How can "professional reviewers" and the every day owner be so far apart?
I agree more with actual real life owners such as those on Edmunds.com and Yahoo Autos. Hundreds of every day owners rate this care as a 4.8 or higher. Again, pay more attention to the actual every day owners of this care for a real life every day assessment of this vehicle.
Chevrolet has a huge hit in the Chevy Cruze. The interior and ride screams quality. When I set out to replace my Mazda 3, I began looking for cars in the same price range. I really didn't think Chevrolet had anything to offer until I gave it a test drive. Once I did, I was hooked. This is an amazing car and much nicer than anything else in its class.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Overall this car is very presentable and everything seems to be of descent quality. I traded my Jeep Wrangler to get into this car because I left the Active Duty Army to re-enter the college life and my concern of the economy and fuel prices. In doing so, I have less pay and lots of commuting leaving this car the perfect choice.
I must agree with the other response to this review. My Chevy Cruze Eco averages 34MPG city/highway under regular to agressive driving conditions and can get 40 MPG on the highway easily with passengers on board and A/C running. I can only see this guy getting this kind of MPG with an over-loaded car, pulling a trailer and being hard on the gas; typical of a Lexus owner I suppose? The Lexus 250h goes for $40k roughly. Spend the $19-21K on the Eco and probably spend $10k-15k in fuel over the life of the vehicle and you still pay less than what you would for this guys Lexus. I can go on, but I think we get the point hear.
Interior
I have been impressed with this vehicle overall considering I wasn't expecting much of an economy car. The cabin of the vehicle is cozy and I feel right at home. If you have any desire to carry luggage around, the trunk is spacious and the back seats drop down allowing space from the trunk into the interior of the car. Cabin noise is also good, there is very little to no noise while cruising down the interstate. The shifter and steering wheel look very nice being that they are wrapped in leather. My model came with the cloth charcoal seats, nothing special here other than they come with full adjustments ie roll forward and backwards (F/B), slide F/B, lean the seat F/B and boost the seat height up or down; all of which are manual controls on my model. Operating the seat function is pretty straight forward.
Exterior
The eco model looks like a very sharp car from the outside with its angular jet-fighter styling. GMC has been designing some gorgeous body styles lately, in particularly their Chevy and Cadillac line-ups. The Chevy Cruz Eco and other models are no acception. Even the chrome rims that come on the eco model are gorgeous. This car looks good in silver with tinted windows.
Performance
The engine by no means is designed to be a racing power-house, it's a frugal fuel-sipper and I have no complaints. Even with being frugal on fuel, the motor is not under-powered by any means. I did expect better gas mileage than 33/4 MPG highway and city considering my 1999 for escort was able to get similar fuel mileage. You get a substancial 3 to 4 MPG gain if you "cruze" around with the AC off. Being in FL, I only do this during the Fall where I have the added benefit of cooler temperatures and better MPG from not running the compressor. Handling feels natural and aggressive on this vehicle. However if I were to complain about something, it would be the lower RPMs have very little torque until you give the turbo a chance to spool up. This can make shifting aggravating at times making for an exaggerated un-smooth acceleration between shifts in lower RPMs; you'll need to see for yourself. Also, if you are considering a hybrid for fuel economy, I would recommend this car considering it is a straight forward turbo-charged motor compared to the new and extremely complex systems coupled with their electrical power-train. I have to say in regards to maintenance and getting parts, more is not better which is what you get with a hybrid. They are still not in their prime leaving few mechanics up to the job of a quick and easy repair of a simple motor design.
Hands Free System
The hands free microphone is the best I've used or seen on a vehicle. Everyone can hear me clearly when I make calls. My old 2010 VW Jetta TDI had the hands-free, but I didn't use because people had trouble hearing me during calls.
Summary
Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. I wrote this quick review to fend for this car since I think it deserves the credit. If this vehicle didn't deliver, I'd be one of the first to tear it apart in an all out review. But for now, it's been an enjoyable experience 5k miles later in a 6 month period. Thanks for stepping up the game Chevy and delivering a quality product for the budget conscious.

Great Car, good mileage & a ton of standard features.
by kybelboy on October 20, 2011
Pros: The performance is snappy and the mileage is great. The steering is tight and very responsive with no body roll. This thing corners like a sports car! Bluetooth and USB. Onstar remote link lets me check the stats on the car from anyplace with a smartphone
Cons: Seats are a little to firm but it does support you well.

Summary: Wayne needs to do more research before he does a review on a car. You have navigation 3 possible ways. 1 Navigation is available and built in if you order it that way. 2 Onstar provides turn by turn navigation. 3 Plug you smartphone or Garmin into the USB port. The car has a lot more options than the competition. Fit and finish is excellent. A quality car all the way around. Wayne obviously still believes the lie that America can't build a good car!

Summary: Used this car cross country as a rental. Spent a week in it. I liked it. It drove well. Unlike others, I thought it had plenty of power with the 7 speed automatic. For the money, I thought it would be a good buy. In fact, a good commuter car. However, as a long-range touring car it has flaws. The seats felt like slabs of marble after 8 hours. My body ached after two back to back 8 hour driving days. As mentioned the cruise control was really fiddley. The barrel/spool shaped control they used was very flawed. Buttons would have been better. Also, the ride became harsh over some surfaces-- especially expansion joints. All in all, I commend Chevy for a good product. If you will use this as a city/commuter car and don't have major tech needs, this could serve you very well. If you need lots of tech and you'll be driving cross country frequently, there are better cars.

Crap car. save your money.
by orateam on May 29, 2011
Pros: 42mpg possible, but not likely. Since this is the positive section, i'll say it has 4 wheels, a steering wheel, air conditioning and it moves forward and back. All kidding aside, it's a pretty car with nice rims. It's also pretty cheap to buy.
Cons: It's junk. I got to drive this for a week and averaged 26mpg under normal driving conditions (60% hwy/40% city) here in orlando. I have Lexus 250h and was hoping this would be a nice cheap fuel efficient car for my son. My 250h averages 39mpg in the

Summary: Just don't see a reason to buy this. Buyers are much better buying a car like the 2011 elantra. It's better looking in and out and they'll average better mpg, and acceleration. the elantra will do 0-60 in 8.5, while the cruze does it in 10. Even my hybrid does it in 7.7. Chevy stop misleading people with 'TURBO' and a 10 second 0-60 car that averages less than 30mpg overall. This is why most of us don't trust American car companies.
